Netflix continues to grow its ever-expanding slate of original series, and now the streaming service has landed a new animated comedy from a very funny writer/performer. Netflix announced today that it has ordered to series Big Mouth, a 10-episode half-hour “edgy, surreal animated comedy” that hails from The League and Kroll Show alum Nick Kroll and his real-life best friend Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy).
The new animated series is pitched simply as “teenage adventures in puberty,” which is the only selling point you need when the show comes from Kroll. He’s enlisted a number of terrific actors to lend their voices to the series, including John Mulaney as Andrew and Kroll as Nick, the two lead characters. The rest of the ensemble is filled out by Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Jenny Slate, and Jessi Klein.
This animated series serves as Kroll’s official follow-up to the Comedy Central sketch series Kroll Show, which garnered swell reviews throughout its three-season run. Kroll serves as creator/executive producer on Big Mouth alongside Goldberg and screenwriter-directors Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, with the series poised to be released on Netflix in 2017.
Kroll has kept plenty busy since Kroll Show ended, wrapping up the final season of The League and lending his voice to the animated films Sausage Party, Sing, and Captain Underpants as well as starring in the off-Broadway show Oh, Hello alongside Mulaney, based on characters that first appeared on Kroll Show. Goldberg, meanwhile, serves as a co-executive producer on the long-running Fox animated series Family Guy.
Netflix has made no secret of its desire to increase its number of original series exponentially, with the ultimate goal of launching a new series every single week, and adding Big Mouth to its slate certainly bolsters its lineup and adds a new promising addition to the Netflix family.
