New BACK TO THE FUTURE and JURASSIC PARK Video Games on the Way

Telltale Games wants gamers to know that it’s time to get back on the hoverboard and start evading velociraptors.  According to the AP, the video game developers who made the new episodic Sam & Max Games, are creating a new episodic series of games based on Back to the Future and Jurassic Park.  Dan Connors, CEO of Telltale, says that the games will expand the BTTF and JP universe but won’t be sequels per se.  The AP also says that Connors, ” teased that the ‘Back to the Future’ games may include a DeLorean ride back to the 1970s while the ‘Jurassic Park’ games would be intense and add new backstories to the series’ man-versus-dinosaur mythology.”  I can see spinning off the Jurassic Park games but I don’t understand how you can do a Back to the Future game without somehow incorporating a character or characters from the trilogy.  Even if you just took Doc Brown’s kids Jules and Verne, that would still technically be a sequel.

No matter how they choose to adapt the stories, the most important element will be the gameplay.  I don’t think Telltale will be doing anything overly complex given their previous work is mainly episodic, casual gaming rather than big-budget, graphical powerhouses.  But both of these properties are beloved (especially Back to the Future) and with no pressure to coincide the game’s release with a new movie, I hope Telltale delivers a quality product.  The first episode for both games is due out in Winter 2010.  They will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC and Mac.
