The Playlist has new details on Tabloid*, the next film from documentary filmmaker Errol Morris.  While other documentarians may have greater name recognition in the mainstream, Morris is one of the best out there.  The Thin Blue Line is one of the staples of the genre and his recent political work (The Fog of War and Standard Operating Procedure) is especially noteworthy.  His next film, Tabloid, is a considerable departure from his previous film, Standard Operating Procedure, and centers on the fascinating figure of former Miss Wyoming, convicted rapist, and dog-cloning supporter Joyce McKinney.

Hit the jump for details because I know you want them.

The Playlist reports that the film is funny and odd, which is an interesting approach to the tale of McKinney, who abducted and raped Mormon missionary Kirk Anderson.  The case was known as “The Case of the Manacled Mormon,” which sounds like a really inappropriate Encyclopedia Brown book.  She then jumped bail and sentenced in absentia to one year in prison since the UK didn’t have laws at the time concerning the rape of men.  She was later accused of stalking Anderson after he married and had a family of his own.  She came into the media spotline again in the 1980s and 2008 when she took her dog to Korea for cloning.

Says the Playlist: “Morris does get McKinney on camera for the film and results are reportedly quite amazing.”  The filmmaker has submitted the film to be screened at Cannes.  Since I can’t really afford to go to Cannes, I hope it ends up showing stateside in the near future.

*The film has yet to settle on a title and could end up being called A Very Special Love Story.

I look forward to anything Errol Morris has to show me. I've enjoyed everything he's made so far. I recommend all his films and the “First Person” series to anyone who is curious by nature.

Errol Morris and his producer Mark Lipson are going to be sued for millions of dollars! The lied to Miss McKinney and used a false pretense to get an “interview” for
“Showtime Network” they said. They told her they wanted a short interview on how the tabloids slandered her and that their purpose was to “clear her name”. Their REAL purpose was to produce a documentary to enter into the Oscars and to steal her story, for which she had turned down two million dollars in order to save the rights so that she could tell the TRUE story HERSELF. But while they were doing the “Showtime” interview, they had people plunder her luggage, and they stole pictures of her, scanned them, ripped apart her treasured personal 33 year old scrapbook, copied her diary, and even stole–and copied— two registered treatments for two headlining events in her life: a treatment for the 1977 press hoax wherein the Mormon slandered her by telling people she raped a man, (who in reality was 300 pounds) and a treatment for her 2008 dog cloning story. Miss McKinney has Morris assistants fingerprints all over her luggage, and is considering pressing criminal charges as well as the civil action. They were also sued by Randall Adams for stealing his story as well in Thin Blue Line.

They were sued by the cop killer that was convicted because of their documentary? Forgive me for not sympathizing with Mr. Adams…

  • Eb

“HH” is totally IGNORANT! “The Thin Blue Line” was a Morris film about Mr. Adams, a man who was FALSELY ACCUSED of killing a cop and a victim of an inept court system and a miscarriage of justice. He was on death row when Mr. Morris produced a documentary which showed his innocence. He was released from jail, an innocent man. Miss McKinney had hoped that Morris would do the same for her. THe truth is, she was a moral young woman from a Christian family who became engaged to a Mormon in the 70s. When he vanished a short time before they were to be married, she hired a detective to find him, and located him in England where he was a street recruiter for the Mormon cult, who had employed brainwashing on him and convinced him he was in progression to Godhood and put him through a bizarre Mormon temple oath, and sent him out street recruiting for polygamist prophets Joe Smith and Brigham Young. [SEE THE FILM/BOOK "THE GODMAKERS".] Miss McKinney finally located her missing fiance in England and they went sightseeing and to a romantic cottage in the country side. There, these two virgins made love and pledged their lives to each other and planned to be married. The Mormons wanted to prevent that, and told the press she had kidnapped and RAPED him, a crime WHICH SHE WAS NEVER EVEN CHARGED WITH, so therefore she certainly wasn't “CONVICTED” of it because she was not CHARGED with it. The Mormon cult wanted to save their multi million dollar “Missionary Image” as well as SILENCE AND DISCREDIT an outspoken dissidant who had spoken out against Mormonism and its human rights abuses and un-Biblical doctrine. To discredit her, The Mormon PR teams then propagated the libelous “kidnap and rape” tale, a press hoax of magnificant proportions. Learn the facts before you SLANDER an innocent person on the internet. Miss McKinney gave a interview to Morris because he claimed he was doing a series on “people who had had their lives destroyed by the tabloid press, for SHOWTIME Network”, while his true purpose was to do a movie on Miss McKinney! The producer and his “research assistant” also rummaged through her luggage, stole photos of her, as well as a treatment she had written showing the TRUTH of her love story, which was very tasteful and honest. In other words, the producer used deception to get to her and was manipulative and exploitive, promising to “clear her name” of the Mormon kidnape-rape myth, as well as save a service dog she was trying to rescue from death at the pound. Instead they hired a trainer who saw to it her service dog was killed. Moreover, the “Showtime documentary” never materialized; Morris used the footage for his own ends. And Miss McKinney as usual will pay the price. Maybe someday someone will do the TRUE JOYCE MCKINNEY story, (and win an Oscar) and ignorant people like those who slandered her on this website, will know the truth, print the truth, or get sued for criminal libel. Are there any HONEST filmmakers out there up to the challenge to do the TRUE story, and pledge to that in writing? Until there is someone honest enough to do the TRUE story, interview the person who lived it and then base a script on THAT story, Joyce McKinney will continue to have her name slandered.

Errol Morris killed my dog too but he didn't even have the decency to make a movie about me.

  • Eb

What do you mean by “he killed your dog?” What do you know about him, other than the fact that Mr. Adams sued him for trying to steal HIS life story as well? About eight lawyers have contacted Ms. McKinney about suing Morris and his producer and “researcher”, who ransacked her luggage and took treasured personal photos and her diary notes, as well as materials she had collected for her book and a presentation to film studios. Morris' researcher and producer while ransacking her luggage, even took her two treatment for two films on two events in her life which made international headlines. Treatments which SHE had written and registered for a book and LEGITIMATE movie on her life. They even stole THE TITLE of a treatment she penned in 1977-78 and registered with the WGA, and went and bought a computer so she could write more. So apparently they believed she was a good writer. And Miss McKinney tried so hard to be honest with THEM. Couldn't they have done it more honestly than approaching her pretending to be with SHOWTIME ? The researcher for Morris lied to Miss McKinney and inferred that they were “doing a series on people whose lives were greatly harmed by tabloids”, and told her they “believed in her innocence and wanted to help clear her name”–to get her to give a rare interview and steal her million dollar story. (She turned down two million from Penthouse and offers from the tabloids starting at $154,000, because she wanted to find someone who would do the TRUE story (a cult rescue version) in a credible way, rather than the Mormon sourced fantasy yarn (that she kidnapped and raped a 300 pound Mormon). Only recently did she learn from SHOWTIME's Legal department, who called to tell her that Morris researcher and producer had deceived her, that they weren't even WITH Showtime! Their ruse was a trick to try and steal her story from her. Everybody who has heard her incredible saga says there's an Oscar in it, but all Miss McKinney wants is “Ten dollars for cab fare, and the TRUTH”, which in the film world is a rare commodity. And she wants enough money for a project to rescue dogs from the pound and them train them for handicapped people–so it appears Morris producer is trying to stop that dream she has by trying to steal her thunder–in a distorted way, too. It is really sad because she survived an amputation. (Did you know she can only type with a voice actuated computer due to having her arms re-constructed? So it is physically and well as emotionally painful for her to even tell her tragic story of her ordeal). She also survived a near drowning in a hurricane and flood, and has courageously spent thirty three years of public derision and contempt while trying to clear her name from the libelous Mormon sourced “kidnap rape” yarn–crimes which she was never charged with or convicted of! Can you imagine having your life, family and career destroyed by (and being chased by) paparazzi for THIRTY THREE YEARS? Her parents really suffered along side her–and they were a decent Christian family when this press nightmare started. And the mainstream press is no more honest that the tabloids, really. They just want a story–and they don't care if it's true or if an innocent person' life is ruined, or the psychological harm they inflict on that person. Miss McKinney is going to court to try and have the items stolen from her luggage, returned, and she is seeking a civil attorney to get an injunction to prevent Morris' film from being shown, or anything libelous containing the wording kidnap or rape” to be stopped. Damaging to a person like that by slandering them, is repairable and leaves scars which can last forever and sear a person's soul…

are you, like, a member of her family or something? how do you know so much about all this? and why are you getting so upset?

      it’s creepy.

      • Ebrow

What is “creepy” is that people like this Collider website can spread LIBELOUS and DEFAMATORY material on an innocent person. What is “creepy” is that ignorant people like you BELIEVE it and SPREAD it. And how we know so much about this, is, we have done thirty years of research on it and have interviewed this victim of slander, (Miss McKinney) many times and seen documentation that it is SHE who is telling the truth. She was never even charged with “Raping a man”, yet the public believes that because of the lie the Mormon PR teams spread to the world using their press and wire service connections. We even traced internet service providers back to known Mormons who were also spread the Myth via the internet!!! As for Errol Morris, he is just another exploiter. But making his silly tasteless documentary (which is really a sex comedy, defamatory, and NOT based on fact) he further slanders her by propagating the libelous Mormon story. And yes, he is being sued for million of dollars by Miss McKinney, just as he was sued by Randall Adams who he exploited in Thin Blue Line.

Please don’t stop. The protesting is written so badly that it’s damn entertaining! Do tell more!

That is Joyce McKinney. She is posting comments like this on every site but she seemed ok with Errol last night.

    • Another Witness

I was there last night, too (@ nyu’s skirball center) and was very curious about her interactions with him, since she was clearly playful–pretending to elbow him in the ribs, etc–while levying pretty serious charges. she didn’t accuse him of interviewing her under false pretenses as she does above, but she did accuse Lipson of stealing stuff from her luggage, and she did accuse Morris of knowingly including false statements, etc., in the film. she was coquettish on stage, and clearly loves the limelight, but also showed a seething rage against mormons and a righteous belief that she’s been wronged and will find justice. all in all, seeing her on stage made her seem even more conflicted and hard to pin down then her portrayal in the film, and made the movie that much harder to assess and internalize.

      it was kind of awesome.
