I absolutely love Jacques Tati. In my opinion, Tati is one of the greatest filmmakers who has ever lived. I rank his film, “Playtime”, as one of the greatest films that I have ever seen so far and it bums me out that he made so few films during his long career.
A couple of years ago, I remember reading that the man behind the also pretty amazing “Triplets of Belleville”, Sylvain Chomet, was developing an animated film featuring Tati which would use one of Tati’s unproduced screenplays and from that day on, this film, “The Illusionist”, became one of my most anticipated movies. Now, we have the first images from the film and you can see them when you hit the jump.
The film is about “a dying breed of stage entertainer whose thunder is being stolen by emerging rock stars. Forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theaters, garden parties and bars, he meets a young fan who changes his life forever.” The film was made with a $22 million dollar budget and judging from the images it seems to be done in the same style as Chomet’s previous film, “Triplets of Belleville”, and I’m perfectly fine with that. I think that Chomet’s style of telling a story through images and sound with no dialogue is absolutely perfect for Tati’s style since Tati basically did the same thing. I think that this one has the potential to really be something special and I really cant wait for it.
The images come from Pathe International’s official site and a big thanks to our friends over at /Film for finding them.

Looks wonderful. I can’t wait to see this. I loved Triplettes of Belleville.
Any word on a U.S. release date ?

While doing a little tiny bit of research for the film when I was doing the write up I didn’t find any information about any release date.
I do know that that some clips were shown at Cannes in 2008 so I think it’s safe to assume that the film will show up again there next year with a release maybe in the fall or summer.
This is all speculation though.

Why do all the images look so dark and glumy? Is the Illusionnist a dark story? Seems odd for a Tati film.

I have wanted to write something like this on my blog and you gave me an idea. Thank you.
