Though the post-Apocalypse era of the X-Men franchise is still largely a mystery, Deadpool 2 is now a sure thing and director Josh Boone is still working on his New Mutants adaptation. While Fox officially announced the return of Ryan Reynolds, Tim Miller, and the Deadpool creative team for its sequel, Boone gave fans a brief update on his developments.

The screenwriter and filmmaker revealed over Instagram the cover of the New Mutants script, which he co-wrote with Knate Lee, and wrote that he turned in a second draft to producer Simon Kinberg.

Kinberg previously described the film as having a “YA vibe,” saying:

They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.

Not much is known about the project and its casting. While one report claimed Maisie Williams (as Wolfsbane), Alexandra Shipp (as Storm from X-Men: Apocalypse), and Anya Taylor-Joy (as Magik) would appear, Fox released a statement to Nerdist claiming the report was not true.

Fox announced three release dates for unannounced projects: October 6, 2017, January 12, 2018, and July 13, 2018. Gambit starring Channing Tatum, which was originally supposed to hit theaters this year, was postponed to an undetermined date, and the actor even took another gig in Kingsman: The Golden Circle in the meantime. With Deadpool 2 officially in the works, it seems poised for one of these slots, if not an earlier one TBD date, given the popularity of the first one. There’s also the X-Force movie to consider, though there has been news on that front since the project was revealed with Jeff Wadlow.
