Warner Bros. has released a new Ocean’s 8 trailer for the highly anticipated spinoff of the Ocean’s franchise. Steven Soderbergh, who directed the first three Ocean’s movies, returns as a producer for this new take that stars Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean—sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean. Fresh out of prison, Debbie sets about crafting the biggest heist of her life, assembling an all-star team to boost $150 million in diamonds. The twist? The diamonds will be stolen off the neck of a world-famous actress (played by Anne Hathaway) at the prestigious Met Gala.
Gary Ross, the filmmaker behind The Hunger Games and Pleasantville, co-wrote the screenplay with Olivia Milch and directs this new film that Warner Bros. no doubt hopes will be the beginning of a new franchise.
This movie looks like a lot of fun. The cast is great, and Ross is a gifted filmmaker. But I’m curious to see how, tonally, it stacks up to the original Ocean’s trilogy. A big part of the appeal for those films was Soderbergh’s throwback visual aesthetic and the extremely dry and oftentimes odd sense of humor of the cast. There’s definitely a line to toe with Ocean’s 8—you don’t want to it to be too similar to the original trilogy, but it’d also be nice if it kept the vibe or spirit of those movies. Regardless, this does not look like a bad way to spend two hours this summer.
