The first time I saw Ricky Gervais as David Brent in The Office (BBC), I thought he was a jackass. When I found out he also co-wrote and directed the series, I knew he was a genius (no lie). Lately, he’s been exploring the big screen. “The Invention of Lying” is his latest leading role, and he’s back to writing and directing as well. Gervais plays Mark, who lives in a world where there is no such thing as a lie…until he invents it and uses it to his advantage. A new poster and the theatrical trailer after the jump.

It’s such a simple concept. If no one had ever heard a lie, they’d believe anything you say. Though, the movie is set in a very modern looking world, which is odd. If everyone told the truth, could we have a modern society? If he does live in a lie-less, but still polluted, poor, and corporate world, that says something about the human race right there.

Anyway, Gervais was recently in David Koepp’s “Ghost Town,” and you should check out his HBO series “Extras,” where he plays a guy who can’t seem to get a speaking role in movies. Most of his shows have a movie-like story arc, so it’ll be interesting to see how he does writing for the big screen.

Here’s the poster, which hit the web on Cinematical.
