Trey Parker and Matt Stone are riding pretty high these days with their insanely successful Broadway show The Book Of Mormon piling up profits and Tonys. As a result, Comedy Central is keen to remind everyone that the comedy geniuses still have an animated series on their network and are planning to air a big retrospective documentary about the making of South Park this fall. Given the fact that the guys run an entire studio dedicated to South Park on the opposite end of the country, it should be pretty interesting. Hit the jump for more details on the upcoming doc.
According to Playbill, Comedy Central will air the untitled special on October 2nd to kick off the next batch of episodes for season 15, which premieres on October 5th. Comedy Central promises to give fans “an all-access pass to the behind-the-scenes world of creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone at South Park Studios in Los Angeles through this special documentary, providing an exclusive, insiders look into the making of a ‘South Park’ episode.”
It’s pretty odd for the network to be airing a documentary like this 15 seasons into a show, but I’d imagine it’s the combined result of the incredible success of The Book Of Mormon and because fifteen is nice round number. But this isn’t the first time that Trey and Matt have been involved with South Park specials on Comedy Central. There was a documentary made by the network early on in the series called Going Down To South Park that was pretty interesting at the time, but is now quite dated. In addition to that, Parker and Stone made a hilarious faux-fifth anniversary special that is tricky to find, but worth the search. Hopefully the boys decide to make this new documentary a little tongue in cheek like that special, because it’s secretly one of the funniest things they’ve ever done on Comedy Central.
