David Foster Ready to Pitch a New STAR TREK Series

Since Star Trek: Enterprise met its demise back in 2005, there hasn’t been another series set in the infinite frontier to keep the long-running franchise alive on television. Of course, with J.J. Abrams bringing a whole new group of fans around to the classic sci-fi characters and settings, maybe the time is right for another new Star Trek series. At least that’s what David Foster of 1947 Entertainment is thinking, and Trek Web (via /Film) caught up with the man himself at the 2011 Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas where he carefully divulged some new information about the progressions of the fully developed series, how it throws back to Gene Roddenberry’s original vision and some vague plot details. See what he had to say after the jump.
As far as how the new series is being envisioned, Foster seems to have a big plan, which only makes sense considering he started developing the project under the code name S.E.T.I. back in 2006 with Kevin Severson, a man who has since sadly passed away after having a stroke last year. Here’s how Foster has says the series has developed:
The series concept is fully developed, subject to change of course, with a solid 5-7 year series plan, pilot script and a conceptualized finale that intends to define Star Trek for generations, extensive character bios, costume and ship/set designs, and more. This is a drastic departure from the typical 8-10 page treatment of the previously pitched Star Trek series ideas that have not included even a pilot script.
But the series isn’t exactly meant to be a remake of the older series, or even keep the old-fashioned style from Roddenberry’s original vision. Foster says:
The series is highly energized with a much younger cast, and uses cutting-edge future technologies with newly envisioned special effects and designs. It includes Klingons, Ferengi, Andorians, Vulcans, Trill, and many more. The Klingons are getting very restless since the Praxis incident forced them to come to the peace tables, and are tired of having to rely on the Federation for support. The Ferengi have discovered a vast new resource that has propelled them towards instant riches and power beyond anything they have previously experienced.
And if that’s not enough to get Trek fans excited, Foster offered up a sort of logline/tagline that really gets me pumped about a new Star Trek series: “If evil wore the face of a hero, would you recognize it? If freedom came in the likeness of your oppressors, would you accept it? If you were your own enemy, who would be victorious?” Of course, the project isn’t exactly in active development as it needs an executive producer to be at the helm before it would get pitched to CBS. Honestly, with the audiences that turned out for Abrams’ Star Trek in 2009, this could be the best time for more journeys with the starship Enterprise.

I hope they include Lady Gaga in the series or the sequel as a singer with dark connections to the villains. With her futuristic music and style, she would fit right in.
In the sequel, Kirk, Spock and McCoy could go undercover to a concert of hers on a distant planet like with Diva Plavalaguna in The Fifth Element (1997). When she sings Bad Romance, Paparazzi, Poker Face or Just Dance, her show could be raided by many henchmen who have a thunderous phaser fight with Kirk, Spock and McCoy like the intense post-bank heist gunfight in Heat (1995).
I AM a trek fan. And I’m NOT excited.
You can’t do Star Trek without Roddemberry’s style and vision (and Enterprise stopped to be “Star Trek” oh his way).
You can call it whatever you want, it’s not Star Trek.
This sounds like a kind of “Battlestar Galactica Trek”, but only with apollo and starbuck and the likes
The only thing exiting about this article is the picture of the Motion Picture Enterprise.
It seems to me they are trying to give Star Trek the Battlestar Gallactica treatment.
If that’s the case, you have no idea what Star Trek means to Trekkies. They just want to use the brand to market to non-Trekkies.
Leave Star Trek alone and develop your own brand. If its good, it’ll stand. If not, it’ll sink.
I like the fact that they’ve put what sounds like a lot of work into the premise. Extensive background material tends to provide a solid foundation for any such work and allows for more cohesive stories with solid continuity.
The tag lines were interesting, but didn’t really grab. Not really that thrilled to have the Ferengi back and am wondering if the Vulcans will be located on their colony world, or if the new continuity will be sidelined in favor of the classics.
It might work. But, I hope it embraces the driving ethos set down in the classic series. A little mayhem and mischief is fine, but don’t make it something other than Star Trek.
I’m wondering what other posters would like to see in a series, if not this?
It’s not like Battlestar was a ratings bonanza after the first couple years anyway. It just got too costly and the ratings couldn’t keep up during the last year or so. I don’t know why Trek would benefit from that formula. Maybe a compromise with something like the X-Files, where you had an overarching mythology/storyline, but most of the episodes where actually stand-alone?
I ran across this link?

It’s for a TV show called “The Projection Room”– starring Steve Bacic… and I think it’s by the people that made BSG.
Can’t wait to see this!
Guys. Seriously? I hate raining on people’s parades, but even a cursory fact check reveals that 1947′s biggest credits to date are fan films. Nothing against them and nothing against fan films, I wish them all the best and I admire their passion, but this article you’ve posted is misleading at best – when you tell us a new Trek series is about to pitched, it implies that the production company has some sort of relationship with CBS or Paramount or at least that those parties are looking to develop that property. To write up a full article about the pitch, only to obliquely acknowledge in the last paragraph that the parties involved have no direct connection to CBS or Paramount, is basically a violation of the readers’ trust. You might as well be writing articles about people pitching movie ideas to their friends and claiming that’s news. Again, nothing against David Foster and his team – I hope they do get to pitch their take on Trek to CBS/Paramount, and if they do, I’ll be very happy to read about it then. But until then, please know that this is one reader who feels that he’s been duped by your website.
thanks for posting
I love star trek, and im open to new ideas. ok they had a go at enterprise and made three seasons and found it did a bit of a belly flop, the idea was good BUT they had’nt realy done there research properly. Where in the history did the enterprise NX01 come from? it’s never been mentiond in any of it’s other show’s and no picture’s or model’s were shown on any of the other class of enterprise. so i would have under stood it if it had a diforent name. But if they are going to give it another go they realy need to do there research properly and go deep into the history and make it consistant it could work.
sorry id made a mistake i think it was four not three seasons.
