New Star Wars Blu-rays are coming! Okay so they’re probably not the Blu-rays you were hoping for—no unedited editions yet—but in anticipation of the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December, Lucasfilm, Disney, and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment are releasing new commemorative Blu-ray steelbooks for a limited time starting November 10th, with character packaging for each movie. So which character dons which cover? Darth Maul is on The Phantom Menace, CGI Yoda covers Attack of the Clones, General Grievous fronts Revenge of the Sith, Darth Vader gets A New Hope, an Imperial stormtrooper leads The Empire Strikes Back, and Emperor Palpatine closes things out on Return of the Jedi. Why no Luke, Han, or Leia? Well probably because two different versions of each character now exist, visually speaking, with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher reprising their roles in Force Awakens. Or maybe the actors didn’t sign off on it. Either way, Grievous gets a cover, Han Solo doesn’t.
Each Blu-ray will come with the existing audio commentary from George Lucas and the film crew, “as well as commentary from archival interviews with the cast and crew.” It appears these will be bonus feature-light iterations of the Blu-rays, but Star Wars: The Complete Saga—which is packed with extras—will be released in newly-repackaged artwork (this time with Adult Vader instead of the young Anakin artwork) on October 13th.
One curious notation: the titles of the films on these new Blu-rays leave off the “Episode” entirely and instead just go straight to the subtitle. Many were surprised when it was announced that Episode VII‘s official title was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it’s possible that Lucasfilm is moving towards integrating the existing franchise with the new films by dropping the episode numbers entirely.
Pre-orders for these steelbooks will begin on August 7th, and again this is specificed as a limited time offer, so they won’t be around forever. You may now continue finger crossing for a release of the original original films on Blu-ray. Check out the new artwork below.
