New Trailer for DISTRICT 9

Yahoo! Movies has just debuted the new trailer for “District 9″ and boy is it disappointing. What should be a film that captures your attention with fierce independence and an intriguing premise (a camp of alien prisoners here on Earth) instead is making itself to be “Transformers”, right down to the abrasive metal bass to punctuate cuts between giant robots. Ugh.
I know “Transformers” has already grossed $300 million but it’s such an awful film. Furthermore, “District 9″ isn’t going to turn any heads by trying to look like “Transformers” because it’s just going to make audiences think “rip-off” when, if you’re aware of the plot, you know that the two have very little in common. The most plot we get here is that a guy sprays off some alien cannister into his face and sees things differently. Before we really understand what’s just happened, we’re treated to just about every action beat the film has to offer. Like I said, disappointing.
Check out the new trailer below. “District 9″ hits theatres on August 14th.

I have to agree with you, Matt, but I still think it’s gonna be a great movie.

“the new trailer for “District 9″ and boy is it disappointing”
I for one don’t care if the TRAILER tries to make a movie look a certain way… I see the same fast cuts and robots as you do, but if you have the capacity to be able to look past the fast cuts and the “abrasive metal punctuations” you can see that this movie will be nothing like Transformers. The trailer may have been generic or for you “dissapointing” but the footage hidden behind the editing should make any self respecting sci-fi fan psyched for this movie.
“we’re treated to just about every action beat the film has to offer”
I don’t see any reason to believe that every last action punch has been previewed here, and until we see the movie there’s no way we can assume anything.

the only similarity i see is possibly with the music but other than that i’ve gotta disagree. a lot of trailers are cut like that. and the music style itself is not original to transformers. i’ve seen trailers cut to that heavy metal bass sound or something like it tons of times. this movie looks like all kinds of awesome to me whereas the transformers trailer just stank from the get go. no offense, but for someone who writes about film and who probably sees quite a few trailers, i’m surprised you’d lump these two together. and trailers are trailers. they’re meant to get bums into seats. i’ve seen a lot of crap trailers for great films and vice versa.
i agree with spartcvs. never judge a film by its trailer. and if this trailer drags some of the folks in who wasted their dime on transformers then why not?

My god, such whining. do you really think this is going to be anything like T2?

I do think the movie will be good (or at least I hope so). I just hate that the marketing folks don’t want it to look like it’s own thing.

I liked the new trailer. First one was basically a teaser and did just that, didn’t really give any solid info. This new one gives you some insight as to a plot and how it might develop has a movie. Dunno how robots got immediately lumped with the transformers genre, but if you follow that logic then whats your consensus on jim cameron’s avatar? transformers 3? I’d expect a broader scope of expectation from a basic trailer viewing but w/e.

What’s the plot? Dude gets something sprayed in his face and…? That’s not a plot. And it’s not robots getting lumped in with Transformers. It’s the way the trailer is cut. There is no consensus on Avatar or Transformers 3 because no one has seen anything from Avatar and Transformers 3 doesn’t exist.

I don’t think it’s going to be anything like Transformers or T4. Anyone familiar with Blomkamp’s work knows the guy is not Michael Bay. Or McG, for that matter.

i just needed to add that over the past few days i’ve seen plenty of sites blog about the D9 trailer and not one has mentioned transformers in any way. cutting, robots (which is really a robotic suit, btw), music, nothing… and no plot? the trailer told me all i need to know about the film at this point. and if all you got from it was that a guy gets something sprayed in his face then maybe you didn’t watch the whole thing. seriously dude, no offense, but maybe writing about movies ain’t your bag. i’ve been reading this site for a couple of weeks now regularly to see if it’s any good and i think i may be done. not impressed.
