To say there’s a lot of TV to watch is a massive understatement, which is why shows like Newsreaders sometimes fall through the cracks. Each episode in Adult Swim’s weekly parody series is only ten minutes long, so there’s no excuse not to check it out (even though its second season ends tonight — I’m warning you just in time!)
For those of you who (like me) were not in the know before today, though: the show (a spinoff of Childrens Hospital) comes from Rob Corddry, Jonathan Stern, and David Wain (so already, you can see what the comedy baseline is for this). Alan Tudyk stars as host Reagan Biscayne, with Ray Wise (who still scares me a little bit from his Twin Peaks days) as a perfect Andy Rooney-type named Skip Reming. Beth Dover and Kumail Nanjiani also feature in the lineup of correspondents, each bringing something both familiar and uniquely weird to the table (in the finale, that includes naming People of Interest’s Creepiest Man Alive, and a segment on Bomb Sniffing Dogs).
In this sneak peek clip, Reming talks about how bars were better back in the old days, saying in part, “a neighborhood bar is a second home, with a bartender wife who listens to your problems, and gives you rows of tiny glass children, filled with liquid answers.”
Here’s a synopsis for the show’s second season:
Newsreaders is Adult Swim’s absurd take on the television news magazine. From the creative team behind Childrens Hospital, season two of Newsreaders will continue to bring viewers inspiring and thought provoking stories that are neither of those things. The new season of Newsreaders will feature Alison Becker, Beth Dover, Dannah Phirman and Ray Wise, with new host Alan Tudyk.
The series was created by Emmy®-winning executive producers Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart), Jonathan Stern (Childrens Hospital, Burning Love; NTSF:SD:SUV::) and David Wain (Role Models, Wet Hot American Summer), with Emmy®-winning producer Jim Margolis (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)serving as showrunner. The series is from Abominable Pictures and Warner Bros. Television Group’s digital venture Studio 2.0, and is distributed by Warner Bros. Television.
Season two of Newsreaders premiered in October 2014 on Adult Swim.
The second season finale of Newsreaders premieres Friday, February 13th at Midnight (technically Saturday morning at 12:00 am) on Adult Swim.
