Nicolas Cage to Star in LEFT BEHIND Reboot?! [Update: Vic Armstrong May Direct Possible Trilogy]

     October 19, 2012

When I think about actors I would want to lead a group of survivors after the cataclysmic events of the Rapture, I think of Kirk Cameron Nicolas Cage.  It looks like Paul LaLonde and his Stoney Lake Entertainment had the same thing in mind as Cage is in negotiations with the faith-based production company to topline a new Left Behind reboot.   Based on the bestselling book series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, three previous movies were produced, all starring Kirk Cameron as one of many left behind when the Rapture occurs and all of Christ’s believers are transported to Heaven.  It looks like Cage will be taking over that role in the reboot.  South Park is going to have a field day.  Hit the jump for more.

Variety reports that nicolas-cage-left-behindCage is in talks to star in the rebooted Left Behind series, in a picture that will be co-written by LaLaonde and John Patus (Left Behind: World at War). Left Behind’s plot is expected to follow a group of survivors just hours after the Rapture.  The modestly-budgeted picture is expected to start filming in the spring in Baton Rouge with a projected release date in the last quarter of 2013.  According to LaLonde, there is a theatrical release guarantee in the works, via Samuel Goldwyn Films.

Comparisons will be drawn to Cage’s work in 2009′s Knowing, along with so, so, so many jokes.  Cage, who is currently filming Jeff Wadlow’s Kick-Ass 2, has a number of upcoming projects ahead of him, including Amicus from director Richard Kelly, I Am Wrath from William Friedkin and 10th century China action flick, Outcast.  Who’s ready for Nic Cage to save the world…again?

[Update: Heat Vision reports that stunt icon Vic Armstrong (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) is in negotiations to direct the Left Behind reboot, which could be spun into a trilogy. His stunt career includes work for Harrison Ford and Christopher Reeves, and has extensive stunt and second unit directing work on films ranging from the original Total Recall to the recent The Amazing Spider-Man. Armstrong previously directed Dolph Lundgren in 1993's Army of One, as well as an episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.]

Speaking as an evangelical Christian myself, I most certainly am NOT a fan of the ‘Left Behind’ books or movie adaptations – past or future – there’s simply too much we don’t understand about that period of upcoming world history, and it’s too important and somber to trivialize for mass entertainment… even if the authors’ intents and motivations were noble!
