After The LEGO Movie hit theaters to rave reviews and beaucoup bucks at the box office in 2014, Warner Bros. made plans to continue its LEGO film franchise with a number of spin-offs. There's The LEGO Batman Movie making its way into theaters on February 10, 2017 and The LEGO Movie Sequel due out two years later on February 8, 2019; in between those films is the Ninjago movie, a film based on the "Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitsu" toys.

We haven't heard much about the Ninjago movie since its release date was announced, but some big news is brewing thanks to BrickSet.com. The outlet is reporting that the film’s voice cast was revealed in a catalog at the 2016 Licensing Expo. Here’s the line-up:

  • Jackie Chan is Master Wu
  • Dave Franco is Lloyd
  • Michael Peña is Kai
  • Abbi Jacobson is Nya
  • Kumail Nanjiani is Jay
  • Zach Woods is Zane
  • Fred Armisen is Cole

While that's a fantastic cast assembled from today's most talented and funny actors, fans of the Ninjago TV series may be a little upset that none of their favorite voice actors are likely to be showing up in the movie, but that's the breaks in this biz. The good news is that Ninjago is likely to be very, very funny.

The outlet also has this synopsis for the film:

“Ninjago is the story of six young ninja tasked with defending their island home, called Ninjago. By night, they’re gifted warriors, using their skills and awesome fleet of vehicles to fight villains and monsters. By day, they’re ordinary teens struggling against their greatest enemy: high school.”

Dan and Kevin Hageman, the writers behind the Ninjago TV series on Cartoon Network, penned the screenplay with Bryan Shukoff and Kevin Chesley. TRON: Uprising’s Charlie Bean is directing the film with Phil Lord and Chris Miller producing.

The Ninjago movie is due in theaters on September 22, 2017. Check out some of our recent write-ups for more from the world of LEGO:
