Nick Nolte to Voice One of the Watchers in Darren Aronofksy’s NOAH

As you’ve probably surmised from the trailers and his filmography, Darren Aronofsky‘s Noah is going to be far from the clichéd image of a guy in sandals and a robe on a boat filled with animals.  One of the overlooked parts of the biblical story is the “Nephalim” mentioned in Genesis 6:4.  In a recent Tweet, Aronofsky revealed “just added the legend nick nolte as the watcher samyaza in #noah . long live the nephilim! it was an honor”  Multiple interpretations of the Nephalim liken them to giants, and Nolte will be lending his voice to one of the supernatural creatures.  I also assume that Watcher Samyaza will speak in a serious of grunts and belches.

Hit the jump to check out the image Aronofksy tweeted, which I assume has Watcher Samyaza on the editing screen in the background. The film also stars Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone, Douglas Booth, Kevin Durand, Martin Csokas, and Anthony HopkinsNoah opens March 28th.

Here’s the official logline for Noah:

Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe stars as Noah, a man chosen by God for a great task before an apocalyptic flood destroys the world.

Nolte appears to be pumped to start recording!

At a quick glance at the title of the article, I thought Marvel had hired Nolte to voice Uatu the Watcher.

Not sure who looks the worse for wear, Nolte, or the Nephalim behind him.

Fun fact: in 1992 nick nolte was the sexiest man alive

Anyway the movie will flop, too many whites in lead roles and change in a simple story that audience is accustomed to

Oh so it will have a voice like a old drunk at a bar.

    Not a great photo.

But Nolte is superb actor. His work in Warrior recently was tremendous.

    • The Flobbit

That was an incredibly moving performance. Nolte tapped into his own world-weariness and disillusionment to deliver a stunning character.

Sounds like Aronofsky is combining accounts from Genesis, the Book of 1
Enoch, the Book of Jubilees, and the the Book of Giants and mixing some
things around in the naming department.

It’s “Nephilim” – and they are not synonymous with the “Watchers”, which were more properly fallen angels. Semyaza was one of the fallen angels, not a Nephilim. The Nephilm were the offspring of the unions between the fallen angels and human women.

The Nephilim are a pet subject of mine. They were angels cast out of heaven, who lay with human women and birthed giants and abominations. Aronofsky is having it so that as they fell out of heaven, they landed on earth and became covered in stone. Now they’re Hobbit-esque, giant, six-limbed stone giants.

sheesh from the photo it looked like he came in from recording the t rex for jurassic world!

More awesome talent into an already promising movie. This just moved a little higher on my most anticipated list.

The refreshing thing – in this age of generic celebrity beauty – about Nolte in this photo is his obvious mindset of, “I don’t give two flying fucks what you think of my appearance. I’m here to act.” One of the last of a great and dying breed.
