The all-female cast of Warner Bros. Ocean's Eight is starting to firm up ahead of the movie's planned October start date in New York. Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) will direct the caper film that acts as a spin-off from the billion-dollar-plus-earning Ocean's Eleven trilogy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt with their ensemble cast. Ocean's Eight - or Ocean's 8, or possibly Ocean's Ocho as it's being called - looks to be just one cast member short of the octet as of this moment.

As Deadline reports, the current casting for Ocean's Eight includes the aforementioned Sandra Bullock in the lead, with Cate Blanchett also previously reported as being on board alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling, and new additions Rihanna (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Anne Hathaway, and Nora "Awkwafina" Lum (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising). Deals are reportedly close to being finalized with Rihanna, Hathaway, Bonham Carter, Kaling, and Awkwafina. A previous report had Elizabeth Banks as being added to the film as well, making her the eighth lead cast member, but the most recent write-ups make no mention of her inclusion.

Steven Soderberg will produce the film solo, which has a script written by Ross and Olivia Milch (Dude). Other than the fact that this will be a heist film led by the aforementioned ladies, little else is known about the plot. However, it may center on New York's most famous annual fashion exhibit and fundraiser:

After this morning's report that Sony's all-female Ghostbusters reboot would likely be facing a $75 million loss at the box office, one wonders just how well-received an all-female reboot of the Ocean's Eleven franchise will be. Personally, I'm all for it, and I can't see there being as much vitriol aimed at a movie that's arguably not as nostalgic and less tied into people's childhoods; as far as I know, Ocean's Eleven didn't exactly crank out toys and merchandise. But people are increasingly "offended" today by some pretty random things, so who knows how this one will work out.

I'm sure you have an opinion on this one, so let us hear it in the comments!
