Olivia Thirlby to Play Cassandra Anderson in JUDGE DREDD

     September 3, 2010

Olivia Thirlby (The Wackness) has been cast as Cassandra Anderson in Pete Travis’s adaptation of the comic series Judge Dredd.  Anderson is a young telepath who shadows Dredd (played by Karl Urban).  In the comics, Anderson was spun-off into her own series, Anderson: Psi-Division [thanks, Wikipedia!].  Variety reports that shooting is slated to begin this year in South Africa.

As we previously reported, Dredd will be in 3D and from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later).  Steve spoke with Urban at Comic-Con and learned that Dredd will always keep his helmet on and that it was Urban’s understanding “that it going to be harder, grittier, and above all faithful to the comic.”

Cool! I’m glad theyre bringing Judge Anderson into this Dredd. A psychic Judge tells me that other more “supernatural” styles are possible in this version. Hopefully Judge Death???

I would love to see Mean Angel again, one of the few very cool things to appear in the Sly version. An army of ABC warriors could look great too since its being filmed in Joburg, if done like Distric-9 effects that would rule.
My only gripe is the casting of Dredd himself, good actor n all, but only Ron Perlman has the chin to do him justice. Unless theyre going early Dredd comic style, where he’s more Clint Eastwood based.
Either way, I’m stoked theyre bringing Dredd back!
