First Trailer and Poster for OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN Starring Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart

     January 22, 2013

The first trailer for Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen is now available online.  In the first of two White House-centric action flicks this year, Fuqua strikes hard and fast to bring down the President of the United States and the symbolic building of his power.  At the same time, he establishes a great foundation for the protagonist’s heroic arc, which makes for a welcome return to action for star Gerard Butler.  There’s a bit of Expendables-style flair and over-the-top effects that are more in line with what we can expect from Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, but Fuqua’s pedigree of bringing out the truth in his characters gives me faith that this will be more than just “Die Hard meets Air Force One on steroids.”

Starring Aaron Eckhart, Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott and Angela Bassett, Olympus Has Fallen opens on March 22nd.  Hit the jump to check out the first trailer and poster.

Here’s the official synopsis for Olympus Has Fallen:

When the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning’s inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President, and avert an even bigger disaster.

Aaron Eckhart AND Morgan Freeman get to be the president?

This looks absolutely awesome, despite some cliches. I’ll be there opening day.

  • movieguy223

    Wow that looks beyond horrible

  • gcm443

Dave said it right. I would have definitely thought that was Roland Emmerich’s movie if I didn’t already know it was Fuqua’s beforehand. Looks cool

WHITE HOUSE DOWN will be better than this

  • Ryan

Started out interesting but turned into total crap. Why would anyone stop at the White House? Strategically there is no point in JUST taking the white house over like that. If your going to attack america four or five well placed nukes would do the job just fine.

    • Grayden

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone had a nuke stashed down their pants ready to detonate. Besides, nukes are a cop-out and highly overrated.

    • ap30

Righttt because nukes are so easy to come by. I think they sell them at Home Depot…not sure I’ll have to check on that. And I’d say taking the President of the United States hostage and taking over something as monumental as the White House is a pretty damn good attack on America.

Any news on White house down trailer? That’s the on I wanna see

  • JW.

It kind of reminds me of Paul Blart Mall Cop… am I alone here?

  • Vickthur

Looks worse than World War Z.

  • AH

So its basically “Die Hard” at the White House…yeah I’ll pass.

  • nelson

Jack Bauer did it first and didn’t need any cgi crap to kick ass. C’mon FOX do the right thing for once and greenlight the 24 movie. There’s a huge fanbase out there that are dying to see the 24 movie on the big screen.

    • Northern Star

Amen to that, Nelson dude, I so hope that FOX see sense and give the ’24′ movie the greenlight… hopefully with Antoine Fuqua directing (like he was nearly signed up to do last year)…

  • Lob Taylor

    This looks pretty interesting.

  • Job

The obnoxious auto-play dog food commercial that started half way through and could not be turned off, saved me from having to watch the rest of this rehash of Die Hard.

  • Chris

I thought I had read a book with a very similar premise. And I had, twice…

Transfer of Power (Vince Flynn): On a busy Washington morning, the stately calm of the White House is shattered in a deadly terrorist attack on the executive mansion. The president is evacuated to an underground bunker, but not before nearly one hundred hostages are taken. Mitch Rapp, the CIA’s top counterterrorism operative sent in to take control of the crisis, determines that the president is not as safe as Washington’s power elite had thought. Indeed, Rapp has made a chilling discovery that could rock Washington to its core: someone within his own government wants his rescue attempt to fail.

First Strike (Jack Higgins): British twins Rich and Jade are once again thrown into danger as they try to help their spy father, John Chance, save the President of the United States from a radical group holding the White House hostage and attempting to steal the nation’s nuclear launch codes.

    • tracer710

It gets better. Fuqua was originally the guy directing the Mitch Rapp movie for CBS Films (Was going to be based on Consent to Kill) and Butler was the front runner to lead. Clearly when the project fell apart the two of them went across the street and said “let’s do one of the other books and just not call him Mitch Rapp”

I was about to turn this mofo off when I saw the cheap car crash. Gerald looks slow, Arron looks, well like what Arron always like.A post boy for Stetson Cologne.
Bottom line the movie looks cheap, cheesy and ambitiously unrealistic. GTFO!

    Looks FANTASTIC.

Die hard in the white house with a Scotsman doing a terrible yank accent.

Regardless, it looks like a whole lot of mindless fun.

XXXL popcorn and coke for this one….

    • 2 Dimensional Mr Kippling

      with you, looks brilliantly cheesy!!!!

  • Andrew from Troy

Wow, the overall negative reception for this film after one trailer is incredible. Terorists seizing the White House is a cool story concept, the acting looks alright, and the CGI is not bad. It’s done its job for a 2 1/2 minute announcement trailer.

It’s ridiculous that people would choose a movie they’ve seen nothing for, from the director of mindless blow-’em-up action films, over this, from the director of Training Day.

Olympus Has Fallen will be the better movie.

  • mad man

I would rather watch Conan the Babarian …..yup the one from 2011 instead of this.

    • ap30

Let me explain how this works mad man: Conan the Barbarian was the biggest pile of garbage I have seen in quite some time. How do I know this you ask? Well, it’s because I have actually seen the film, therefore my hatred towards it is perfectly justified. Now on the other hand, me along with everyone else in the world (yes mad man, including you) actually have never seen Olympus Has Fallen. Therefore, to compare a movie that has already came out to one that hasn’t really just doesn’t make sense. Seriously dude, you have seen 2 minutes of a near 2 hour movie and you’re already writing it off. FAIL HARD.

Looks more like Die Hard. Also looks pretty cheesy, not surprising with Fuqua. And of course, random evil Asian terrorist.

  • Jacob

Watch day 7 of 24 instead. Ha.

  • Robby

Big dumb fun, i’ll give it a look!

  • Anonymous

Hey ho,llywood how about you stop inventing te,rrorists like the g,overnment and deal with the actual domestic enemy, there was another shoo, tout at a school today, this sic,ko countr,y is gonna wipe itself out PERIOD. good job.

    • 2 Dimensional Mr Kippling

      fair point

  • adel

Woooooooow great .. I will absolutely watching it

  • dobby

you couldnt get someone with a good american accent????

  • 2 Dimensional Mr Kippling

hahaha this looks genius! cheesy comedy movie gold!

Die hard/ air force one style rip off, with 90′s style action dialogue and a scotsman with an awful american accent, whats not to like! This looks better than any expendables or fast and furious movies.

My hopes are high for a brilliantly bad movie :p
