Usually, when Marvel and ABC team up, it’s to launch another superhero TV series. This time, the two companies are going in the other direction, and creating a comic book (synergy!)
As ABC’s Once Upon a Time continues through its fourth season, its graphic novel spin-off Once Upon A Time: Out of the Past will be available for purchase April 1st (no foolin’). It will also act as a follow-up to 2013’s well-received Once Upon a Time: Shadow of the Queen.
According to a press release, the 112-page hardcover book will feature origin stories for characters like Captain Hook, when he was just young Killian Jones, as well as the early sparks of romance between Rumplestiltskin and Belle. The series will also explore the backstories of Regina, the Evil Queen, as well as Jefferson, the portal-jumping Mad Hatter.
The collaboration is an interesting move that reverses the typical comic-to-TV (or film) trend. With more and more networks looking to expand original sci-fi, fantasy, and genre content, this could open the door to more creative fluidity in both directions.
So speaking of, what shows would you like to see turned into comics? The #1 choice for me is definitely BBC Three’s recently cancelled zombie series In The Flesh. I need more. Almost Human, too. In fact, maybe instead of petitioning Netflix or whoever to pick these shows up, we should be asking for graphic novel releases …
Meanwhile, here’s the full press release:

About “Once Upon a Time”
Master storytellers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (“Lost,” “Tron: Legacy”) invite everyone to join Emma Swan, Snow White, Prince Charming, the Evil Queen, Hook and all the other resident fairy tale characters on their quests to reclaim their happy endings. Welcome to Storybrooke, Maine, a small town that probably won’t show up on your GPS, but it’s a magical place to visit. Reality and myth merged after Emma broke Regina’s curse, which had deprived the fairy tale characters of their memories and trapped them in our modern world. When they finally regained their identities, our heroes were dismayed to discover that they weren’t transported back to Fairy Tale Land. To make matters worse, Rumplestiltskin – aka Mr. Gold – decided to escalate his power struggle with Regina by introducing magic into the town. But this is our world, and magic always has a tendency to yield unfathomable consequences.
“Once Upon a Time” stars Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White/Mary Margaret, Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, Lana Parrilla as the Evil Queen/Regina, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David, Emilie de Ravin as Belle, Colin O’Donoghue as Hook, Jared S. Gilmore as Henry Mills and Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold.
Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are creators and executive producers. Steve Pearlman and David H. Goodman are also executive producers. The show is from ABC Studios.
