Christopher Nolan is one of the few directors who can get just about any actor he wants for his movies. However, as we previously reported, his next film, Dunkirk, will be looking for unknowns in the lead roles and bolstering them with name talent in the supporting cast. The film has already set Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, and Kenneth Branagh for supporting roles in the World War II action thriller, and yesterday we reported that they were eyeing newcomer Fionn Whitehead for one of the lead roles.
Today, Deadline reports that the production is eyeing a young man who doesn’t have any feature film credits, but is far from unknown. One Direction singer Harry Styles has been offered a role in the film, although Deadline notes that “It is not believed to be a leading role.” It sounds like when it comes to the leads, Nolan definitely doesn’t want any audience baggage attached to the main characters, although how that factors into the plot remains to be seen.
For those that don’t know, Dunkirk will focus on the evacuation of the eponymous town. “Operation Dynamo” was a British military operation that saved the lives of 330,000 Allied military servicemen, and was hailed as a “miracle of deliverance” by Winston Churchill. The difficulties faced by the stranded servicemen were memorably depicted in the long tracking shot in Joe Wright’s Atonement.
For Styles, this isn’t the first time he’s been offered a film role, and he has time to take this since One Direction is currently on hiatus. It would definitely be a savvy move to start transitioning to films sooner rather than later (just ask Justin Timberlake, who wisely diversified his career rather than sticking with his boy band), and you can’t do much better than Nolan. If Styles passes on Dunkirk, he might still branch out into scripted entertainment by taking a role in season two of Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens.
