97 Original Scores Up for Oscar; DRIVE and ATTACK THE BLOCK Ruled Ineligible

As the 84th Academy Awards move closer, we’re starting to get a better sense of how things will pan out. We recently shared the 39 songs that will contend for the Best Original Song category, and now the Academy has announced the 97 original scores eligible for the Best Original Score award. AMPAS is notoriously picky when it comes to eligibility in this category, and as we feared the scores for both Drive and Attack the Block have been deemed ineligible. Also disappointing is the ineligibility of Alexandre Desplat’s mesmerizing score for The Tree of Life.

While it’s upsetting to see some of the year’s best work side-lined, there’s plenty to be happy about. I was a huge fan of Howard Shore’s work in Hugo and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as well as The Chemical Brothers’ brilliant work in the criminally underseen Hanna. trent-reznor-atticus-ross-imageI think Shore’s Hugo and Reznor and Ross’ Dragon Tattoo scores both have good shots at nominations. Alexandre Desplat’s beautiful work in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is also a contender, as is John Williams for War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin. While I’ve yet to see the film, many are expecting Ludovic Bource to be recognized for The Artist. As outside shots, I’d be over the moon to see Hanna recognized, as well as Cliff Martinez’s excellent score for Contagion and Jonsi’s work on We Bought a Zoo. What about you?       Yes, Patrick Doyle for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” or for “Thor” would be amazing. He’s doing such great work now!

    I still find it pretty nuts that Trent Reznor won an Oscar last year and he looks poised to grab another this year.

    i’d go with hanna as my favorite score of the year. i listen to that one quite often.

    I’m rooting for Reznor or Inglesias at this stage, The Skin I Live In’s score is absolutely stellar.

    I’d love to know a bit more about the qualification process. I see “My Week With Marilyn” is also missing from the list, and I thought that had a lovely theme.

    I think Desert Rat has the right nominees, although I haven’t heard the Tin Tin score yet. The Drive score was so good too and Mr. Reznor had a few songs on that as well.

    They need to bring back the Best Adapted Film Score. Some of the movie soundtracks on your list might’ve been eligible for that category. It wouldn’t be like adding a new category, which is like pulling teeth for the Oscars to do; it’d be simply restoring (with a tweak or two since it was originally for musicals) a category that was dropped in the mid-80s with neither fanfare nor explanation.
