Just a couple of days ago, we ran an exclusive interview with The Departed screenwriter William Monahan regarding the news that he’s set to pen a remake of Park Chan-wook’s 2005 film Sympathy for Lady Vengeance with Charlize Theron in the lead.  In addition to talking about that adaptation, Monahan provided a brief update on his next directorial feature, Mojave.  While he was remiss to provide plot details, he revealed that filming is set to begin in the first quarter of next year and that he has already set his cast.  Indeed, the news broke today that Oscar Isaac (The Bourne Legacy) and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) are poised to topline the thriller.  Hit the jump for more details.

william-monahan-mojaveMojave is described as “an intense two-hander about a man who escapes into the desert only to encounter a doppelganger-like antagonist and subsequently enter a vortex of criminality and violence,” per Variety.  Monahan, who won an Oscar for his The Departed screenplay and has also written the scripts for Kingdom of Heaven and the upcoming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Oblivion, penned Mojave and will also take the helm on the project.  He previously made his directorial debut with the 2010 Colin Farrell-led London Boulevard.

Isaac is stepping into more leading roles lately after shining in supporting turns like Drive and The Bourne Legacy.  He stars in the upcoming Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis and will be seen opposite Elizabeth Olsen in the adaptation Therese.  Clarke is also making a successful pivot into leads, as he was excellent in his all-too-brief role in this year’s Lawless and has drawn significant praise for his work in Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming Zero Dark Thirty.  Isaac and Clarke are both fine actors and judging by the brief logline, Mojave will be some compelling stuff.
