Oscar Talk for Swedish DRAGON TATTOO Star Noomi Rapace? In Talks SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE IV

     August 19, 2010

Noomi Rapace, who played Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, may be about to break out stateside in a big way.  While Rapace isn’t a household name in America yet, Stieg Larsson’s “Millenium Trilogy” (of which Dragon Tattoo is the first part) novels are still tearing up the bestseller list and the movie is one of the hottest titles on Netflix “Watch Instantly”.  Rapace also won the Swedish equivalent of an Oscar for her performance as Salander and now Magnolia Pictures wants to get her an Oscar nomination for that performance.  Deadline reports that Rapace is basically being set up to be the next Marion Cotillard.  Hit the jump to find out about the ridiculous amount of high-profile roles she’s been meeting for.

noomi_rapace_01As we reported on Monday, Rapace was set to meet or had been meeting with McG, Joe Roth (Freedomland), Brett Ratner and Ridley Scott, as well as producers Avi Arad and Di Bonaventura Pictures, production execs Marc Evans at Parmamount and Greg Silverman at Warner Bros.  Deadline now has details on those meetings and others.

First up, Evans wants Rapace for Mission: Impossible IV (“If it’s not too far along,” an insider tells Deadline) and Silverman wants her for Sherlock Holmes 2.  She’s scheduled to meet with Silverman and M:I-4 director Brad Bird next week.

Rapace also sat down with Brett Ratner and Ridley Scott, but apparently not for any specific project.  She also had meetings with producer Brad Fischer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and filmmakers James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) for The Raven, Tommy Wirkola for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Jon Amiel (Creation) for his next flick (rumored to be titled “Masterwork“), and discussed a “juicy villain role” with McG for his next film, This Means War starring Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, and Reese Witherspoon.

I’ve only seen Rapace in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but she gave a good performance.  It’s not one I would call Oscar-worthy, but I don’t think there’s any reason to dread how much we’re about to begin seeing her.

I think she has a chance of bagging the oscar for best actress in a leading role. Salander is one of the most interesting and complicated female characters ever put to fiction and I really think Rapace brought her to life. It makes it even more impression when you learn the level of preparation and commitment she made for the role.

I look forward to seeing more of her and can definately see her doing well in some quirky rom-com (based on seeing her interview), she looks like a very intelligent actress. I wish her luck.

She's awesome, but I got really excited when I thought she was going to be in the BBC Sherlock tv series : ( Irene Adler anyone?

Not Oscar-worthy? Oh my my my, I'm guessing you didn't like the subtitles. This was one of the best performances man or woman in a long time. She nailed her toughness and vulnerability, it was an incredible performance of a conflicted and deep female role.

I have a few questions Matt…why are you always sounding so sarcastic in your reviews and comments on casting, etc.? I hardly ever read who wrote a piece on this site before finishing, but after reading yours I can always tell it was written by you because invariably there is some snarky remark about an actress, actor, or director you don't like…how can we trust your editorials if you appear to be so biased towards many in the industry? There's a huge difference between stating an opinion tactfully and subtly bashing those who make products you make your living off of….

No it wasn't. It was a good performance, nothing more, nothing less. I've seen way better in the last couple of years. And part of what made her good in that movie was that they had written her character pretty good, compared to the other characters in the movie. And btw, this is comming from a guy from sweden. So no, i don't “dislike” her because i'm too stupid to read subtitles or something.

People seriously need to stop overhyping her performance and that movie. It's not ALL THAT.

Noomi is the best actress ever. Also you're wrong about it only being a good performance. This girl can out act anyone on the planet. She does everything in her native country “Sweden”. She's done and still does after the “Millenium” films… Theater. She's also done TV. I can't find any of these on the net, however, I have found scenes from some of her earlier films “Daisy Diamond” and ” Du & Jag” you can't even tell these are the same people much less the same person acting these characters. She's amazing. Just look up scenes from these films yourself and if you still feel that way then I don't think you've watched very many films in your lifetime and can accurately jude a performance… are you blind by chance. Plus you can't even tell she's acting all of the scenes look real. She becomes posessed by the character she's playing and while dangerous in doing this (Ledger) she's able to void the character when she's done with it. She takes the character home with her and lives the character until the film is over. I more than admire this woman she is suvant in her profession, and it's evident in her works of art. View a current trailer on youtube of her latest film “Beyond” can't wait to see it.

Give me a break. I mean, it was a GOOD performance, but not a great one. Or for that matter, all that memorable foreign or not.

Boy, talk about an over obsessed “fan”.

In my opinion, her acting in that movie was as close to flawless as you can get!

Noomi deserves the Oscar for Best Actress. Her Lisbeth was perfection. She captivated many hearts with her performance. Many have been re-energized by Noomi’s Lisbeth, and the trilogy will become a classic worldwide due to her acting. Hollywood voters should be fair and avoid playing American favorites or let’s protect the U.S. version of the films. Film lovers worldwide connected with Lisbeth due to Noomi’s acting strength in a very difficult trilogy, and that acting deserves the Oscar for Best Actress.
