Warning: This interview contains spoilers for Outlander Season 2, Episode 1!
Now that you’ve heeded the warning and are only here if you’ve seen the first episode of the new season of Outlander, how about that time jump? It isn’t in line with the source material and raises questions that will hopefully be addressed later in the season, but for now we can all marvel at Tobias Menzies‘ fantastic work as Frank Randall. You’d think Claire (Caitriona Balfe) telling her (other) husband that she was on a time-traveling adventure is big enough of a bomb to drop for one episode, but on top of that, she also reveals that she’s pregnant with another man’s child.
While promoting the new season in New York City, I got the chance to chat with Menzies about “Through a Glass, Darkly.” He discussed his reaction to the script, how he approached shooting such intense material, and what we can expect from Frank in the future. Check it all out in the video interview at the top of this article, click here to see Balfe and Sam Heughan play “If/Then,” here to see what they had to say about the fan reaction to Season 1, and here for Allison’s Season 2 review. Outlander airs Saturday on Starz.
Here’s the official synopsis for Season 2 of Outlander:
“Book Two of “Outlander” begins as Claire and Jamie arrive in France, hell-bent on infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart, and stopping the battle of Culloden. With the help of his cousin Jared, a local wine merchant, Jamie and Claire are thrown into the lavish world of French society, where intrigue and parties are abundant, but political gain proves far less fruitful.
Altering the course of history presents challenges that begin to weigh on the very fabric of their relationship. However, armed with the knowledge of what lies ahead, Claire and Jamie must race to prevent a doomed Highland uprising and the extinction of Scottish life as they know it.”
