Disney has released six new images from Sam Raimi‘s upcoming fantasy-adventure film Oz the Great and Powerful.  The pic is a prequel to the classic The Wizard of Oz, and centers on Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, who finds himself transported to Oz and drawn into a battle between the three witches Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams).  One of these new images shows Diggs making his way through “Chinatown”, where everything is made of china and has been broken by the Wicked Witch and her army.  Diggs puts some of the pieces together and makes the China Girl (voiced by Joey King) who decides to come with him on his journey.

Here’s the official synopsis for Oz: The Great and Powerful:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot–fame and fortune are his for the taking–that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity–and even a bit of wizardry–Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

    Alice in Wonderland 2

    :/

You’re absolutely right (actually everyone is right because we’re all saying that) it looks like Alice 2, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It looks like Alice 2, that doesn’t mean it will be. With this kind of cast, and Raimi, I’m still hopeful that this movie will surprise me

No, its not. Alice in Wonderland was a whole lot more bland then this Oz: The Great and Powerful movie.

No, This won’t be any thing like Alice in Wonderland. This movie will be much better then Alice in Wonderland is. Alice in Wonderland was just very bland and that won’t be a problem with this movie.

While I like the look of this movie, I have to admit that it looks almost the exact opposite from the orignal land of Oz. I see they put the flying monkeys in…well, monkeys in some capacity, but besides that, where were all of the other creatures that are shown in the traioers and promotional material. Anyways, I still think it looks good, but I guess one will have to approach this kovie with the idea that both movies are part of the same story, just a different rendition of it.

actually this will be the prequel to the movie we all know, so in some way it doesn’t really bother me the land looks kind-of different. In the time between the movies, a lot could have happened to the land of Oz.
And I believe they are going to include the munchkins, the forbidden forrest, flying apes, Glinda etc.

The thing that does bother me with these fantasy movies these days is the huge amount of CGI. Sure a set will be expensive, but why produce mountains and stuff out of the computer, while there are enough magical places on earth were to shoot.

I agree about the cgi 100%. It is a damn shame that directors today opt to take the easy (lazy) way out. Just look at George Lucas and the Star Wars prequels. All the magic from the first three was lost because of the overabundance of cgi’d sets. Concerning your thoughts about the time lapse for the movie, I understand what you’re saying, but there has to be a reason why all the creatures shown are not there in the original. Being a Disney movie, I hope they don’t shy away from death in this one.I also hope they don’t try to shoehorn in another sequel after this.
