New Poster for OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Reveals a Wicked Witch

     October 31, 2012

A new poster for director Sam Raimi’s fantasy film Oz the Great and Powerful has been released.  The pic is a prequel to the classic The Wizard of Oz, and centers on a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics (James Franco) who finds himself transported to Oz and drawn into a battle between the three witches Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams).  Appropriately, today’s new poster reveals the film’s green-skinned Wicked Witch, played by Weisz.  I’m absolutely loving the whimsical imagery that Raimi has cooked up so far, and this poster is a great tease of the film’s darker side.

Hit the jump to check out the poster.  The film also stars Zach Braff and Abigail Spencer.  Oz the Great and Powerful opens on March 8th, 2013.

Here’s the synopsis for Oz the Great and Powerful:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

“Oz The Great and Powerful” is produced by Joe Roth and written by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire (credit not final). Grant Curtis, Philip Steuer and Palak Patel are serving as executive producers. “Oz The Great and Powerful” opens in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2013.

    Weren’t there 4 witches?

    • RunnerX13

There were in the books, but The Witch of the North and South usually get mashed up.

  • Jack

I think that’s Mila Kunis as the wicked witch of the west. Oh yeah, spoilers.

    • Sean

I think it is rachel weisz because she has (and forgive me for saying this), but which ever witch it is in the poster above has a bigger “chest”.

      • Jess

It’s Kunis. In the book, Theodora was the Witch of the West, Evanora was the East.

and they purposefully put weisz in green and showed her being evil to make everyone think she’s it. but she wears the ruby slippers, which the east wore.

  • Grayden

Weisz is the Witch of the East, Kunis is the Witch of the West, and Williams is the Witch of the North. This poster, if continuity is to be maintained, portrays Kunis’ Theodora, Witch of the West.

Unless the Witch of the East gets green skin too, like her “sister”, the Witch of the West.

Are they sisters in this movie?

      • Grayden

I know in the 1939 film, the Witch of the West called the dead witch her “sister”, but I don’t even think it was meant literally. She probably just referred to her as such because they were both witches, as in a sisterhood of witches.
