First Trailer for Sam Raimi’s OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL

     July 12, 2012

Oz The Great and Powerful slice

The first trailer for director Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful has been released.  The pic serves as a prequel to the classic fantasy The Wizard of Oz and stars James Franco as the eponymous wizard.  The story centers on Franco’s small-time circus magician with dubious ethics who finds himself transported to Oz and drawn into a battle between the three witches Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams).  I love how the trailer begins in Academy ratio and black-and-white before expanding to widescreen and color once Fracno’s whisked away to Oz.  The visuals are gorgeous and it’s obvious that this is one big movie, I’m just hoping that Raimi’s quirkiness and signature style isn’t pushed to the side in order to make “the next Alice in Wonderland.”

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Zach Braff and Abigail SpencerOz the Great and Powerful opens on March 8th, 2013.

Oz The Great and Powerful posterHere’s the synopsis for Oz the Great and Powerful:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

“Oz The Great and Powerful” is produced by Joe Roth and written by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire (credit not final). Grant Curtis, Philip Steuer and Palak Patel are serving as executive producers. “Oz The Great and Powerful” opens in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2013.

  • Goobity

    That looks wicked.

    • jcho

      If that’s a pun I heart you.

  • El Alto

I think it’s pretty obvious from the trailer that Raimi’s silly/hokey-ness is definitely not being pushed aside. IDK if that’s really a good or bad thing, he can over do it with those overly quirky and dumb moments.

    Dancing Spider-Man… ‘Nuff said

  • drod

Looks good and fun! Although I wish Downey Jr. Had stayed as the lead!

    • Sammy

Downey Jr is already a Tin man in another film dude!Lol!As if you didn’t know already!?

  • Lance

Why would Raimi’s “silly/hokey-ness” be a bad thing for this project? Oz is not exactly known for being dark and gritty.

    • JPA

He didn’t say that, actually he said that he hopes that Raimi’s “silly” style is not pushed aside.

      • Angmal

No he didn’t. He said he didn’t know whether that was a good thing or not. Although from his tone and choice of words clearly he is not a fan of Raimi’s sense of fun and stylistic pyrotechnics.

      • Mr. Intelligent

        Lance and Angmal are wrong.

      • Angmal

“Mr. Intelligent” is clearly an ironic sobriquet.

  • DAAR

    Beautiful poster,
    Beautiful trailer!

Looks fantastic to me and this prequel storyline looks better than Dorothies, however from the looks of this, I would like to see a remake of Wizard of Oz to match this film. could even be a trilogy! (just hope theres no singalong crap.

    • The Dude

A “Wizard of Oz” remake is the WORST IDEA EVER!

  • onion

needs Marc Webb gritty reboot…..cough cough… snark snark

    • Joe

it also needs to be more ‘realistic’ and ‘grounded’ filled with teen ‘angst’.

  • Albert

It looks visually good so I’m in for now. Most likely I’ll go see it because it looks like its worth paying for.

  • wacko3205

In the immortal words of the writer Clive Gollings while quoting the sexual prowess of a female Ewok @ Comicon: “That looks furry nice!”

  • Kevin

    Raimi sucks

    • Angmal

Stop trolling, Marc Webb. Or is that Marc Webb’s mother?

  • Matthew

Mila Kunis is the evil witch who turns green, right?

    • JennyL

I think Mila Knunis is the witch that got a house fell on top of her.

      • Hawxors

Very right JennyL. That would be the Witch of the East that had the house fall on top of her.
