In a not exactly shocking move, Legendary Entertainment is already putting the wheels in motion on a sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming monsters vs. robots movie Pacific Rim.  For those unaware, the story finds humans towards the end of a losing battle against giant monsters called Kaiju.  In order to combat the creatures, humans have developed their own giant human-controlled robots called Jaegers.  Del Toro recently told Steve that he had been tossing around ideas for a follow-up with Legendary and he and screenwriter Travis Beacham had been writing a proposal of ideas, and now the studio has commissioned a script for the sequel.  Hit the jump for more details.pacific-rim-comic-con-posterPer Heat Vision, Legendary has officially tapped Beacham and del Toro to co-write the script for the proposed Pacific Rim sequel.  The practice of commissioning scripts for sequels before the first film hits theaters has become commonplace, as we’ve seen it done for everything from The Amazing Spider-Man to Green Lantern to The Hangover.  Studios take a “better to be safe than sorry” approach, hoping that audiences will respond positively to the first film, thus making the prospect of a follow-up financially lucrative. The report notes that while del Toro will co-write the script for the sequel, it’s unclear at this time whether he will direct.  He told Steve that a Pacific Rim follow-up would not be his next movie, as he wanted to do something in a genre that wasn’t as big for his next directorial feature.  Indeed, yesterday we learned that del Toro is prepping the haunted house story Crimson Peak as his next film with a planned early 2014 production start date.If Pacific Rim is a huge success, I wouldn’t be shocked if del Toro stepped back to a producorial role on the follow-up and handpicked a different director to take the helm.  Alas, it’s still incredibly early to start speculating on the sequel as we have del Toro's first directorial film in four years to look forward to imminently.  We’ll get our first look at what del Toro has in store for us when the first trailer for Pacific Rim is unleashed later this month.  The film opens in 3D on July 12, 2013.
