New Featurette for Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM Delves into the Film’s Story and Characters

     June 28, 2013

The marketing campaign for Guillermo del Toro’s great-looking new film Pacific Rim is about to be kicked into high gear, and as a result Warner Bros. has now released a nearly 4-minute behind-the-scenes featurette for the pic.  For those unaware, the story is kicked off by the emergence of monsters (known as Kaiju) who start a war that devastates humanity.  To fight back, humans build giant robots (known as Jaegers) that are controlled by two pilots.  This featurette gives a clear outline of the story and the world that del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham have created, and it also provides a nice behind-the-scenes look at del Toro’s process as a director and his approach to crafting the Pacific Rim universe.

Hit the jump to watch the featurette, and if you missed any of Steve’s set visit coverage, be sure to check out his video blog recap and 20 things to know, plus his interviews with Guillermo del ToroCharlie DayRon Perlman, and executive producer Callum Greene.  The film also stars Charlie HunnamRinko KikuchiIdris ElbaClifton Collins Jr.Max Martini, and Rob Kazinsky.  Pacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Look, I’m not some type of crusader who thinks Marvel is infallible, but I think people need to stop lumping Ironman 3 in with Man of Steel and other recent superhero and/or blockbuster disappointments. It was a very funny movie, not perfect, but well put together and enjoyable. Man of Steel wasn’t even a good time.

That aside, this featurette got me really exciting for Pacific Rim!

There are plenty of people who loved Man of Steel, which also has dual focus on a lost man’s adventure and on large scale action.
I was not disappointed by Man of Steel, and I don’t expect to be disappointed by Del Toro’s next epic.

If you listened to the collider podcast last week you would know that this film was tracking badly and there is little interest. Therefore, it looks as though it will flop, so you should do some homework before you go around the internets anonymously being a twat to people for no reason other than you don’t know what they are talking about.

tracking badly? says who? i bet this would be the biggest blockbuster of summer 2013,notwithstanding IM3

      • Nick Gadman

Erm… The people who track movie buzz? I quoted my source. Listen to the podcast dude, I think Adam makes a reference regarding it.

      • Nick Gadman

I’m looking forward to this movie too mate, but I looked forward to Dredd too…

There is a Forbes that reveals just how inaccurate current tracking methods can be. They rely on land line phone calls to gauge public interest and ad effectiveness. Land lines. That basically ignores more than HALF of the target audience which only have cell phone service.

Try doing your homework first, and twat is not a nice word.

I was going to comment and say, ” thanks for the information, wasn’t aware of that”

But your snarky after thought ruined the education aspect, I wasn’t the person barreling at the first commenter in a negative, unproductive manner. That’s why I called him a twat and told him to do his homework. At least read the whole thread…

God. I actually thought someone with attention to detail and emotional intelligence had reached out and taught me something there… Then. No! Its the usual turd in the punch bowl
