The techno-speak in Guillermo del Toro’s giant robot movie Pacific Rim might take a bit of getting used to, so the director has put together this new featurette that explains some of the terms.  Ever wanted to know why it takes two people to pilot a Jaeger?  Want to know what a “neural handshake” is or what “drift space” means?  Check out the new video to find out!

The new featurette, introduced by del Toro, features Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky and Max Martini.  Hit the jump to watch it.  Pacific Rim opens July 12th.

Check out the new featurette below (via IGN):

Here’s the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

    I’ll buy left brain/right brain.
It’s actually nice to know this ahead of time — that part had me worried.

This will shut up all the people complaining about why there are two pilots.

lol exactly. Hellboy and HB2 was awful. People give Toro too much credit, the guy hasn’t done a lot of good films, yet.

Del toro made Pan’s labyrinth, he got oscar from it. He also made Blade, one of the first generation marvel comic heroes movies. For me, he encourage other movie maker to put crazy, odd, misfit ideas that seems only work in comics(geek literature) into the movie.

yeah but he is still overrated. the man has one great movie in the span of 2 decades.

So…do missiles not work on these monsters? Or are we collectively just overlooking that?

I was thinking the same thing since the first hand to hand combat trailer. If the technology exists to create these battle MECS how in the hell does it not exist to create some sort of super missile, thermal grenade, super armor piercing rounds, or any of the million possible other advances in weapon technology.

I honestly find it hard to believe that in the future the world will resort back to Romanesque Colosseum style of warfare, especially when the battle ground is over populated cities. And I won’t buy the argument that missles will cause more collateral damage, just look at the carnage created during the fights.
