Another trailer has been released for Guillermo Del Toro‘s Pacific Rim.  The story is kicked off by the emergence of monsters (known as Kaiju) who start a war that devastates humanity.  To fight back, humans build giant robots (known as Jaegers) that are controlled by two pilots.  The latest trailer explains how the Jaegers work, but the main focus is the scale of the kaiji-vs-jaeger battles.  Nothing is really spoiled here, and watching this in a YouTube player is almost a disservice to the size of the action.  I still can’t wait to see this flick up on the big screen.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron PerlmanPacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Del Toro can deliver much fun even if it looks like Transformers for some.

i want del toro to make an hulk movie.

I really hope you are as detailed and hypercritical in your review of this as other films of directors you’re not a fan of…

GDT is seen as “one of us” which means that there is a lot of bias in regards to reviews of his films (from certain sources, that is). Not a hater here. I think he’s an extremely talented visionary. But you’d have to be blind to not see the bias in some of the reporting/coverage he gets.

I don’t know what to think of this movie. Perhaps if it came from Michael Bay it would be easier to understand and predictable what to expect. But coming from Del Toro I am at a lost. Hoping it will be great but again, this one is too difficult to predict.

    • Grayden

With it not being related to Bay, you make it sound like a bad thing. Fortunately, it can only be a good thing.

  • Wilsonvolleyball

Was that a T-Rex roar over the title?

Anyway, looks cool and definitely something for the big screen.

So…..how does this look like Transformers again? I don’t see Michael Bay in this at all. The trolls are screaming because this film includes giant robots. That doesn’t make it a Transformers rip-off.

Stop the hate and wait until its released to put your 2 cents in.

From the standpoint of big, lumbering robot-looking things doing battle, it does look like Transformers, but I certainly wouldn’t call it a rip-off. That was actually the least interesting thing about the first Transformers film (which was tolerable for the most part) for me: Slow giants doing battle all the time doesn’t exactly equate to great action. I hope there’s more to this one.

I understand the monsters vs robots thing. The robot solution is completely unrealistic and impractical, but you have to suspend your disbelief. Sure. I’m game if it gives me some summer entertainment. But I really don’t understand the two-pilots thing. Why develop that tech when one person should be able do it themselves? No fighter plane has two pilots. Sure, bombers have navigators and Navy interceptors have Radar Intercept Officers, but it just seems idiotic to go through all that trouble to have two pilots. Maybe they’ll explain it in the movie? I’ll give Del Toro the benefit of the doubt, I guess…

My guess is that it will have something to do with the human mind not being strong enough to control it on their own, so sync it with another human and all of a sudden SHAZAM, robots are controlled.

      • Dallas

Yeah that was my guess as well. Those things have to have a lot of power to run them and the human pretty is pretty resourceful. Plus with two humans and, that are both trained fighters or, specialist its makes the machine more powerful. Two brains is better than one brain I guess.

      • Dallas

        Human brain*

This trailer just seemed like a lame rehash of the previous one until about 1:32. The former was way better, especially the scene with the jhaegar dragging the ship.

It looks like you won’t be able to see whats really going on in the theater. Too much darkness.

i don`t understand how they can make a movie like this, and have EVANGELION or even MAZINKAISER not developed for the big screen

That’s by far the best trailer

I have to agree it has a feel you’re watching Transformers. But with Del Toro at the helm, well, can only expect good things from this otaku director.

  • LOL AT HACK NOLA. Del Toro!

By far the best trailer of the summer season! Fuck Da man of steel

    • Travis

      That’s funny

Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman in the same movie. It’s almost like Sons of Anarchy really jumped the shark this time.

No worries ‘Del Torro…I WILL be seeing your movie soon!

  • Littertray

Watched Robot Jox the other day on NetFlix and this seems to have taken a lot of inspiration from it.

  • Travis

I know I read this earlier and think it is a great point that it will be interesting to see how the battle scenes look. From the preview it looks like they could be very slow and power focused much like the giant rock battle in The Hobbit. While it was cool for the moment, it would likely get old over the course of a movie because it takes so long for it to play out. Not saying that this will be the case, but part of what made Transformers enjoyable for many was that you saw huge battle sequences play out in a way that was exciting and fast paced at times (story aside).

They already have my money. It’s robots fighting monsters and it looks like fun which is what matters. I’ll worry about everything else after I see the movie.

  • Jonathan Rios

Special effects look terrible, over the top CGI, cheesy lines, and the feeling of a cheap TNT Satuday morning show…but oddly I may still go check this out
