UPDATE: Steve here. I just spoke to Guillermo del Toro and he wanted to make it clear that the footage in the video has NOTHING to do with Pacific Rim.
Guillermo del Toro‘s visual effects company Mirada has released a promotional video that pitches their use of technology to serve storytelling. It features a bunch of excerpts of Mirada’s work, the most exciting of which shows a giant robot shooting missiles from his arm. This is very likely related to Pacific Rim. It does not appear to be finalized footage, but could be pre-visualization for those robots (called Jaegers), so it’s worth a look after the jump.
And for more on Pacific Rim, check out our interview with del Toro where he talks about the first trailer, the 3D conversion, the sequel, and more. Starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman, Pacific Rim opens July 12, 2013.

Official synopsis:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
hmmm. if it is related, it looks like very early work. But i’m not convinced it’s anything to do with Pacific Rim. It’s not high enough production quality to be from the film, just look at the lighting, the city etc.
I don’t think so. Just look at the poster with them standing on it. If that’s the old decommissioned one then the other ones should look more advanced than that one. The one in the video looks like its older tech than the one from the poster. It’s almost District 9 level of effects and with Pacific Rim’s budget you’d think it would look better.
Didn’t they show footage at Con? Does anyone know if they looked like that?
His whole “I’m interested in the people at the bow of the ship” schtick.
In other words, if you come work for del Toro, your ideas magically become his. And you give up your right to sue him for plagiarism. hehe…Friends with James Cameron, what else did you expect?
That’s all business.
Umm, I don’t think it is. He said in a recent interview that the Jaegers were approximately 6 football fields tall. That pre-vis robot is barely one building tall.
That’s ridiculous. I hope your remembering that wrong. I’m all for giant pain-inducing robots, but 6 football fields tall? Come on meow.
Look at the pic at the top of the article and the scale of the humans to the visor part of the helmet. They look pretty vast to me.
I’m remembering it correctly. In fact, I read it in an article on this site. You should look it up, it’s an interesting read.
Looks like its from a commercial probably, not movie quality, by design standards as well as CGI
This guy’s constant self-promoting pr schtick is getting old fast. He is a decent b movie director. He has yet to make a great film. people who buy into their own crap are usually the ones making above average films getting sucked off by teens and man-childs whose sense of culture revolves around comics and summer blockbusters.
Both Hellboy and Pans Labyrinth are great movies and Hellboy 2 The Golden Army is a good one. As far as his other films they are at least decent, better than most A-List director’s films.
Is it just me or does Pacific Rim reminds me quite a bit of the manga animated series of the 70,s Mazinger Z ?
The secret about Pacific Rim is that there will be no CGI, at all. It will be a traditional guys in rubber suits production, everyone punching each other in a cardboard city made out of milk cartons.
This comment made me spit out my tea! God damn it, but would be hilarious if that was indeed the case.
Official word per GdT on his site…”Please if you can post a disclaimer about that footage in any website or message board where you see it. This thing is entirely unrelated to the film”
