With Pacific Rim opening this weekend, I recently landed an exclusive interview with Guillermo del Toro.  During the interview he talked about the early test screenings, how he didn’t want the movie to look like a sleek car commercial (he jokingly calls his visual style “goth tech”), collaborating with ILM to create the amazing monster vs. robot fights, making sure the action is clear and believable, why you should see it in IMAX 3D, the Sideshow Collectible Pacific Rim toys, and so much more.  Hit the jump for what he had to say and make sure to see Pac Rim in IMAX 3D this weekend.  It’s definitely worth the extra charge.

In addition, if you missed del Toro’s updates on Haunted Mansion, Justice League Dark, The Strain, Crimson Peak, and Hellboy 3, just click the links.

  • Explains how the interview room relates to Pacific Rim.
  • 0:45 – Says the early screenings tested very high, especially with women.  Now they are focused on promoting word-of-mouth.
  • 3:00 – He didn’t want the movie to look like a sleek car commercial.  He jokingly calls his visual style here “goth tech.”
  • 5:00 – Describes his work with ILM to create the monster vs. robot fights.  Del Toro actively designs each shot and tries to shoot it like you would a sporting event.
  • 8:00 – Says they thought about every element telling the story to make sure the action is clear and believable.
  • 10:45 – Explains why you should see it in IMAX.
  • 13:15 – Del Toro talks Pacific Rim toys that you can look forward to by Sideshow.
  • 14:20 – There are two fighting video games available.  Del Toro says a different kind of game that enhances the world would take three years to develop, only possible if there is a sequel.

But a year ago, he was mad that Warner bros. was post converting the movie in 3d… Now he wants me to see it in 3d

Cash grab no matter how you look at it. There’s no regular IMAX release.

… he’s trying to get the movie to make money. Can’t blame him too much I guess. A kaiju film not based on or remake of anything is a hard sell after all. At least I got to see it without that 3D gimmicky

When are studios going to realize that most people hate 3D?

    • http://www.gotham-news.com/ Pietro Filipponi

They already know it. That’s why they’re forcing it on people by limiting 2D options whenever they can.

I honestly don’t feel 3D is a gimmick anymore. Filmmakers are using is to enhance their films and create an immersive experience. And when you have a passionate director like GDT, he makes sure you’ll be getting a great experience. Give it a shot.

Went to see Pacific Rim (now renamed Horrific Quim) tonight…. Its like the worse Syfi Channel film ever with the greatest Digital effects fights ever. It gets so corny its fucking brilliant! The film goes from Crap to Amazing. Its one of the most bizarre films I’ve scene that has some beautiful scenes followed by cringe cringe cringe…and the best sound track ever …..Oh I’m lost!!!!
