New Banner for Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM Highlights the Film’s Epic Scale

by     Posted 350 days ago

Director Guillermo del Toro’s “monsters vs. robots” movie Pacific Rim looks incredible.  It’s easy to get excited about films based on meticulously crafted marketing materials, but yesterday’s WonderCon trailer for the film showed exactly what happens when a studio like Warner Bros. gives a visionary filmmaker like Del Toro a significant budget and says “go play.”  If that excellent WonderCon trailer somehow didn’t sell you on just how massive the world of Pacific Rim is, today’s new banner does a swell job of reminding us that the film demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Hit the jump to get a look at the new banner.  The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr., Idris Elba, and Ron Perlman.  Pacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

a studio like Warner Bros. gives a visionary filmmaker like Del Toro a significant budget and says “go play.”, sorry but he is not chris nolan who is a great director and a money making machine for warner bros like James Cameron is for 20th century fox ;)

How do you think the other two started stupid ? With a similar opportunity.

Nolan is overrated, though I am still a fan of his films. Except Dark Knight Rises, that movie was ridiculously disappointing. And Cameron is an Avaturd! I wish he’d go back to his roots. It’s about time Del Toro gets to have some fun with a big budget.

I love the haters. Del Toro has done nothing but show that he is a good director, and he has made good things happen with small budgets. A studio gives him the money to do what he wants, and all people can do is complain. I hope this movie is a big ass success for two reasons. One, so everyone bitching can shut up. And two, so that he’ll get the funding to do projects that he really wants to do.

Yeah I love Hellboy 1/2 and Blade 2. I still need to see Pan’s Labyrinth. Hopefully this is a major success and knocks it out of the park, I mean I think most people like big robots fighting big monsters.

i highly recommend you to 1st watch THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE and then watch PAN’S LABYRINTH…! not that it is a sequel or something but their tone is the same…! & Del toro said that pan’s labyrinth is the sister to the devil’s backbone….!

I love GDT’s work, but maybe some of the backlash comes from the fact that he was given a huge budget and chose to tell a story about giant monsters and robots fighting, which, in and of itself is the sort of premise 6-year-old boys come up with all by themselves. I admit, seeing the trailers for Pacific Rim has brought out the 6-year-old in me because if you’re going to do something like this, it appears GDT is doing it properly. I just hope the visionary behind the beautifully crafted Pan’s Labyrinth is bringing some of that magic to a story as inherently silly as this.
