Here’s the synopsis for Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

On paper, this sounds great. I’m just not a fan of the robot designs or the dual piloting. I know it’s early, but anything with the robots just looks too fake and video game-y.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up as next year’s Battleship.

    • Curbcooler

Battleship?! Your Comparign a “Peer Berg” movie to a “Del Toro” flick? Ha!

  • mr perfect

Looks cool – another inception WAAAAAA…WAAAAAAA…trailer.

    • El Alto

WAAAAAA! epic stuff. WAAAAA! Things exploding. WAAAAAA!

  • ManBoyDudeChild

The Portal glados computer voice is DAMN DISTRACTING. Der Toro mentioned he went to her for this movie, but I think it was a big mistake. Everything else looks mega cool though.

    • ManBoyDudeChild

Well aside from the some production design like the robots as someone mentioned above.

      • spongefist

        Transformers vs Jurassic Park

Looks utterly crap, but I’ll being watching it in 3D and loving it !!

    • Johnny kockran

Not everyone is a video game nerd. I had to google Glados because I had no idea who that was.

      • thedroop

why would anyone give a shit about this statement? and why be an asshole about it? jeez

  • Tey

    Hope they polish the effects…

  • Mars

    Umm…all that waiting and hype..and that’s it? Rock’em sock’em robots vs. Godzilla.

I seriously thought we had moved past giant primitive sea creatures by now.

    • IsThisIt

If you had any preconceived notions of this film being ANYTHING but giant fucking robots in a Hollywood blockbuster then you didn’t do your homework at all.

      That’s. All. This. Is.

  • Guy Who Gives A Shit!

Charlie Dayb, is actually Charlie Day. You folks at Collider just get lazier and lazier after each post, don’t ya?

  • paul tracy

I thought Hugh Jackman was in this? No?

  • Michael

Next year is going to be a HUGE year for WB and Legendary Pictures.

  • Awesome

That crappy man o steel trailer left a bad taste in my mouth but this looks tremendous. And it doesnt have the stank touch of the rancid Chris Nolan anywhere. AWESOME!

    • Carmichael

      Get out of my brain!

  • Shmojo

    Dear marketing department,

BRAWWWWWWW! There are other ways to sell movies to people BRAWWWWWWWWW! without using the same device in every BRAWWWWWWWWW! trailer.

Awesome Rocket Punch at the end of the trailer!

That’s it? After all the articles and all the hype? I mean, I’ve got nothing against Del Toro but what has he actually done that was great beyond one movie to deserve so much hype?

    • Gechh

How about 5 movies, 1 book, and a mountain of other conceptual work that is just amazing. He’s the kind of filmmaker like Joss Whedon where you love him just as much for his work as for the fact that he’s a fanboy.

  • choice

yeah yeah, where’s Hellboy 3. Time would have been better spent finishing off that series and now with the slew of other projects he’s got lined up there seems little chance of that happening :(

  • junierizzle

I love Del Toro but I was underwhelmed. I still think it will be good but still underwhelmed by this trailer. I can’t believe this thing got made. At the pitch meeting didn’t they just say “next” when they heard “Giant robots fighting giant monsters” The script must be really good.

They should have named it, DEL TORO’S ATTEMPT AT GETTING FINANCING FOR A MOVIE HE REALLY WANTS TO MAKE. I kid, I’ll be there with bells on.

Looks to much like a video game. There are some things you just can’t film without making it look like sh*t. but we’ll see. But i have a feeling this has rotten all over it

    • Awesome

This looks amazing. You like Nolan films so you don’t know what great filmmaking is. Go doodle with crayons you peabrained Nolanite Nolan nuthugger.

    Looks Fun

  • Angel

OMG. Transformers vs Godzilla. This is going to be the movie of the year. I cant wait

  • Lou

Not going to lie but this “didn’t blow my skirt up”. It has so much potential yet the robots look like a huge beat up Iran Man (see arc reactor type device in chest) mixed with Transformers. The monster looks okay. I’ll still watch it and it should be a great popcorn flick. Expected more.

    • Lou

That’s supposed to be “Iron Man” not “Iran Man”.

      • Sean

Now that you mention it, “Iran Man” does sound interesting.

  • liquids

    rocket punch! sold!

the special effects look cheap…looks like a video game for first 10 sec and then the rest of the trailer..after the hype i expected more

awww hell yeah! I have been waiting for a giant robots vs giant Monster movie like this my whole life

  • kev

    Fuck you, Lou

    • Lou

F word in response to an observation to the trailer. Either Del Toro is hiding behind the username “Kev” or a fan boy has Tourettes.

Kev to friend: “Yeah there’s this guy I never met who didn’t speak highly of Del Toro’s new film ‘Pacific Rim’! I replied ‘F*ck you, Lou’ “.

Friend: “You told a guy to f off because he wasn’t thrilled with a trailer?”

Kev: “Hell yeah! I showed him.”

      Friend: “Dude! You’re so tough!!!”

Kev:” I know right?! I feel tough let’s play ‘Call of Duty’!”

Lou to friend:” Some guy named Kev said ‘F*ck you, Lou’ because he didn’t like my take on the ‘Pacific Rim’ trailer.”

Friend to Lou: “Be nice he’s just emotional. Something is ailing him. Anyone who runs their mouth like that isn’t feeling well.”

Lou to friend: “Yeah, you’re right. I’ll pray for him.”

Lou to Kev: “Jesus loves you, Kev. Word of advice: be careful how you speak to people, not everyone shares the value of responding to curses with a blessing. You never know who you’re dealing with nowadays. Take it easy, it was just an observation to a trailer.”

      • The Dude

        Well done, dude.

      • Awesome

Wow Lou you must have really been gotten too to write a short script about it like that. Damn, how many times did you revise that before you posted it?

  • yurine

    I’m excited for this

  • Joe

The jury is still out for me. This trailer played like a weirdly made smoothie created from parts of Evangelion, Gundam, and Godzilla. I agree with some of the other posters when saying the special effects look rather poor, but I would expect that they will improve quite a bit by the time the finished product hits theaters. My heart is telling me this will be awesome, but my mind is telling me to reserve judgment.

  • IndianboY

Looks like Glados is the A.I for the giant mechs.

  • adel

This really look bad and cheap !! I’m disappointed , I hope the real movie better than this

    • terry

      Give me a break.
This is what you get when you get folks like Del Toro and Nolan fresh off of a few hot cinematic properties. The big boys at the studios want even more and so eventually Toro and Nolan start to crap themselves dry of ideas.
This movie looks like utter trash. And don’t get me started with TDKR.A plot holes infested hot mess with Ann Hathaway looking like an assclown.
And how much you want to bet that Lee Mizz Ray Bowels end up just like Ishtar, Howard the Duck and Cutthroat Island?

    • chucdq90

      How? Overrated?

  • ap30

Man you guys are a whiny bunch. The premise is MONSTERS vs ROBOTS….WTF do you expect from a movie with that type of premise? A deep, cerebral, thinking man’s movie? Good lord, the trailer played out exactly as I thought it would knowing what I know about the film.
Movie geeks = easily butt hurt.

    • daveyboy

How good the movie is depends on how well they recognize what they are showing us is completely ludicrous. I can’t tell from the preview how seriously this movie is taking itself…so I can’t tell if want to see it. If the reviews say it is a clever homage film I will check it out despite the odd looking effects. Because a good monster movie is a lot of fun… last good one was The Host, a Korean movie.

    • Sean

The problem is that the trailer didn’t show how they did anything interesting with the premise. All the trailer did was establish the premise and gave us a taste of the obligatory motivational speech. This is all stuff that anyone could write. There’s nothing unique or interesting about what they’ve shown up to this point.

      • ap30

Like someone on my level said in the comments above, the first trailer is usually just to show off the action, the second and third ones always go deeper into the plot and motivations of the characters. Listen, I dont even care for Del Toro to be honest with you. It’s just slightly annoying to always see negative comments ppl put towards films before ANYONE has even seen them. Heath Ledger cast as the Joker is a shining example…

  • paul tracy

That little bruise inside of everyone, especially those defending this, is painfully obvious. I’m sorry in advance for you.

    So dreadful. really. just awful.

  • terry

Looks like a hot mess. Toro is finally making his very own TDKR.
Maybe Ann Hathaway will make a cameo as a hippie, middle school teacher who takes her class on a field trip, discovers all hell has broken loose, sees a fallen robot, hops inside and saves the moth***** day.
    Never underestimate Hollywood.

Jesus H. KeyRYST and his pet dinosaur Noah, this looks like a stupid, stupid film. Fools and their money will soon part.

  • Pingback: Pacific Rim Trailer has arrived!! Time for some Jaegers vs Kaiju action!!! | Don't Forget A Towel()

  • Andrew from Troy

For God’s sake people, the point of the first trailer for any big budget blockbuster is to simply tell us the overall plot (invading monsters vs. giant robots) and give us some cool effects shots/action sequences. The second trailer always goes more in depth. This SHOULD be common knowledge.

If you’re looking for character development or an in-depth description of the plot, wait for the actual film and not the damn trailer.

  • tarek

    Looks good.

If the characters are well crafted, then this could be a great movie.
If not, then it will be yet another transMorphers movie without boobs.

  • Steve

Spectacular fun. The FX look great. I’m not watching on a smart phone so I guess that helps. Giant robots fighting monsters is going to look like giant robots fighting monsters. Not sure what people were expecting. Having endured the junkyard aesthetics of Michael Bay’s giant robot action, this is a welcome relief for my eyes. And GLaDOS takes this to a whole new level of cool.

  • Don’t Lie

Every whiny bitch complaining about the look of this trailer will be there on opening weekend. Nerds are so predictable.

  • Jamesy

Hmm I expected more after all the hype, just looks like Godzilla vs Transformers…which is cool but I thought it would be a bit more I dunno, original? The effects look too much like a game for me. Hope there’s more to this than just robots vs monsters

  • James

I love how so many people comment on their hate for the dark knight rises on other film boards. So dumb, GET OVER IT. Anyways, thought the trailer was sweet, i’m definitely stoked.

  • Chris

Meh. I’ll still see it, but this trailer just didn’t resonate with me. I’ve been looking forward to visuals and plot details ever since the movie was announced. Now that we have some, I can’t help but feel underwhelmed.

It doesn’t look like a bad move, but I am missing a sense of excitement after watching this trailer because it feels like I’ve seen every single shot from somewhere else before.

  • Ba

    Feels like Evangelion.

  • wacko3205

Wowzers. That is so Old School Saturday morning Godzilla & Friends hour that my brother & I used to love. It came on right before Chinese Theatre.

    I can’t wait for this.

I hope Del Toro rocks it with this one.

    Think he will.

Very curious to see what comes of the Godzilla remake that was due for 2013.
