PACIFIC RIM WonderCon Trailer Starring Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi

     April 29, 2013

Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim had a presentation at this year’s WonderCon, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.  They showed off plenty of new footage in a new trailer for the upcoming giant-monsters-vs-giant-robots flick, and now that trailer has landed online.  As Charlie Day‘s character says, it’s “2,500 tons of awesome.”  The new trailer provides a lot more info on the story, but it’s the visuals that will really blow people away.  I felt bad watching it on my computer monitor because this is a movie that clearly demands to be seen in theaters.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Clifton Collins Jr., Idris Elba, and Ron PerlmanPacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Finally, a legit trailer. Granted, I’m watching from my tiny little iphone screen, but I really like what I see.

  • Nate H

Looks like a fun summer movie. Lots of epic visuals to keep you entertained. Not a lot of quality plot or reasoning (why are these giant robots better than advanced weaponry? Bunker buster bombs are ineffective but a robot punching these aliens is? What’s the point of two people working in unison while connected through memory? Wouldn’t it be easier for one person to just pilot it?), but it you let that go it could be pretty fun to see. Doesn’t come close to Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, or Man of Steel in terms of anticipation and buzz, but if you’ve got an extra night during the weekend and you’ve already seen those other movies, you may go see this.

    • Holoshot

Maybe you should watch the movie before bemoaning its plot holes.

    • MechaPumpkin

This may be the stupidest comment I have ever read. You haven’t seen this movie, nor have you seen any of the movies you reference in comparison.

I believe the explanations you’re looking for, if they exist, will be contained within the movie. Just a thought.

This comment demonstrates fanboyism on its purest level. Bashing one thing in favour of another, before either even exist. Brilliantly lame.

      • Steve

You have to read between the lines. People who get competitive about movies that haven’t come out yet, are either trolling, or if sincere, just illustrating how much they have invested in other films. I don’t pick sides. I just want to have my head explode with awesomeness during the Summer. Lots of potential for that coming from lots of different movies. We’ll see.

Close, but no cigar. Seems like a videogame. And not a good one.

      Was that a haiku?

  • matt

Looks good. I’m not really a fan of monsters vs big mechs, but those people who are I bet are wetting themselves. The kids will go insane for this stuff and the toys will sell.

Sucks that all the fights take place at night though.

  • ledbetter

    Holy sh*t, that looks insane!

  • Kanwar

Yes!! Finally a New Trailer….This looks so Epic…Hopefully It Delievers…..Never Seen a Ship Treated like That….Cool

  • Dedpool

Whoa!!! It’s like giant mecha anime come to life!!! Bring it on! I can so easily see this becoming an animated show too!

    • Danny

Haha it already is an animated cartoon. It was called Neon Genesis Evangelion. This looks amazing but that show was the original giant robots vs monsters. This kinda ripped it off.

      • Gögi

it was not the “original giant robots vs monsters”. good try though.

  • Michael Horne

This just looks like a whole heap of fun.

  • Key Master

Very cool, looking forward to it!

  • NotDudebro

Am I the only one not impressed with the visuals? They look so cheap and everyone keeps talking about how pretty it is. This is Avatar all over again. I FEEL LIKE I’M TAKING CRAZY PILLS!!!

    • Mike

Then don’t see it dude.. fcuk… shut the F up.

    • jon

So, what movies do you think have good visuals? Because this looks like pretty top tier effects.

This complete moron “Matt Lane” on the Facebook comment section: hey annoying troll, do you get tired of posting negative comments on this site ALL THE TIME. Do you have an actual life, dumb vegetable? Yeah, didn’t think so.

Oh, and I almost forgot: Bay is one of the best action directors in history. And no, this is not sarcasm or a joke. Even the pretentious brit Nolan likes Bay’s films. Hell, even the guy who runs Collider is a huge Bay fan.

And Bay already made a giant robot movie that was hugely successful and he’s doing a 4th one as we speak. So he has nothing to prove and you FAIL big time. Yet again. Fact is, your beloved spanish fatty Del Toro is the one who has to prove himself with his robo-flick. He’s the one under HUGE pressure now. He doesn’t have a single successful blockbuster movie and if Pacific Rim flops his career is OVER. He’s done.

So let’s see how successful Pacific Rim will be. Let’s see if it can beat the first Transformers at the box office. And if it fails let’s see how you and the other fannerds will defend it. You’ll probably go with the moronic “It’s still a better movie” without realizing that there’s no such thing as a “better movie” or a “worse movie” simply because art is completely, utterly SUBJECTIVE.

So keep creaming your pants over this Pacific Rim flick and keep bashing other filmmakers that are hugely successful and have huge audiences all over the world. With that kind of troll-ish behavior you’ll go really far. Far in your mother’s basement – where you and the other small nerds like you belong.

    So keep it up.

    • jimmydeansausage

i think you are the bigger nerd for taking the time to respond to him. also he is right, bay is a hack, and box office numbers mean nothing, his movies suck and this movie looks better than anything bay has ever done.

    • mattinacan

Hellboy 1 & 2, Pan’s Labyrinth, Devil’s Backbone, Cronos – all GDT films that are a million times better than anything Bay has ever done, what are you talking about. You, just like your rant, are full retard.

      • Geen

And they’re here! You geeks are quick. Job well done. Bravo!

Now, when you grow up and move your smelly butts away from your computers you will learn that what you just said reflects nothing but your own insignificant opinions. You do know what “an opinion” is, right? It doesn’t mean “fact’, that’s for sure. So there’s no way that you factually prove that Del Toro’s films are good. You can quote me critics and RT ratings all you want. It’s doesn’t matter and it’s not changing anything. Your small opinions are still opinions. And read my post again. Because your dumb replies simply proved what I said about the blind nerds who have no idea what they’re talking about.

Now go watch that trailer again and keep creaming your pants. It’s what you do best. A logical discussion is not for you.

    • Kojak

What’s with the racial slurs Adolf?

    • solgazer

Are you Michael Bays mom or something? That’s quite the tirade from a relatively innocuous statement.

    • MechaPumpkin

GDT is selling a giant robot movie without the “Transformers” brand. Every dollar it earns will be entirely on its own merit.

Personally I dislike Michael Bay, but many people like him. No one I know, likes him, but there are people like you who feel otherwise, and I respect that.

What I don’t respect is you coming in here in a praise-Bay-rage, and bashing people for doing (in most cases less personally-antagonistic) exactly what you yourself are doing. You didn’t “almost forget” to praise Bay in your comment (as you stated), it was your sole purpose for posting.

Please, go ahead and enjoy Bay’s movies, that’s apparently what they’re for. I, and many others, have watched them IN SPITE of our dislike of him (and what he has done to properties we hold dear). I have seen all of the Transformers movies. I keep hoping they’ll get better, because I love the Transformers. I would trade out the director on any one of them, in hopes of something better. In my opinion, he has diminished the implicit greatness that already existed, and made the Transformers less great, but still the Transformers, and still great. So I watch each new one . . . with hope.

      • Um, Sure

And with that comment, Geen has been owned proper.

  • Amar

This kind of movies bring video game junkies out of their house.

    Guillermo with a budget.

  • Phil

Since a Neon Genesis Evangelion movie won’t be coming anytime soon. This will do.

  • Lob Taylor

Still not sure why they built the machines instead of just using some really big bullets or missiles.

    • huh

You’ve got a point there…but without the machines the movie would be boring

  • Mike

Then don\’t see it dude.. fcuk… shut the F up.

Films like this tend to be better trailers than movies. A minute of big robots stomping around is cool, but two hours of it may get boring. Definitely see it, but only because I have faith in Del Toro. It’s got to be better than Transformers – the most expensive toy commercial ever.

  • paul tracy

GDT should write the action. Someone else should write the dialogue.

  • The Destroyer

Jax Teller, Clay Morrow, Charlie Kelly, and Stringer Bell are all in this. Four of my favorite TV actors. I’m seeing this.
