Summit Entertainment has released a new image from director Neil Burger’s (The Illusionist) adaptation of the YA novel Divergent.  Based on the book by author Veronica Roth, the story takes place in a futuristic society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities, and Shailene Woodley’s Tris is a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces termination due to her status as a “Divergent.”  This new image highlights a pivotal moment in the story when Tris begins her initiation into one of the factions, and it also provides a great view of the Chicago skyline, which is where the pic is being filmed.

Hit the jump to check out the new image along with a high-resolution version of the previous image that was released, and if you missed it click here to check out our recent lengthy interview with Roth about the film and the final novel in the book series.  Divergent also stars Kate Winslet, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Tony Goldwyn, and Ray Stevenson and opens on March 21, 2014.

First Official Image from Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS Starring Christian Bale and Natalie Portman

We’ve seen plenty of set photos from Terrence Malick‘s Knight of Cups, but now an official image has been released.  The image is a nice shot of a scene we previously saw in set photos with Christian Bale and Natalie Portman frolicking on a beach.  If you focus, you can almost see the lyrical cinematography and whispered narration.  There are few details on Knight of Cups other than it’s about the Los Angeles movie business and features half of Hollywood.  In addition to Bale and Portman, the cast includes Cate Blanchett, Isabel Lucas, Antonio Banderas, Wes Bentley, Imogen Poots, Freida Pinto, Teresa Palmer, Ryan O’Neal, Jason Clarke, Joel Kinnaman, and Shea Whigham (hat tip to The Playlist for keeping count).  However, these are actors who have only been seen in set photos; we don’t know who will make the final cut.

We also don’t know when Malick will have that final cut.  He’s editing multiple movies, and he has no problem spending years in the editing room.  As The Playlist reminds us, it took 18 months between the first photo of To the Wonder to the film’s release.  Footage from Knight of Cups is currently being shown to possible distributors at Cannes this week.  Hit the jump to check out the image.

Hugh Jackman Squares off Against Hiroyuki Sanada in New Set Photo from THE WOLVERINE

Shooting wrapped some time ago on The Wolverine, but director James Mangold is happy to keep tweeting set photos.  The latest is a fight between Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Lord Shingen (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Mangold added, “Hiro Sanada and HJ rehearse clash of claws and blades. Hiro is a truly great actor, martial artist and friend.”  I’m sure all of this true, but what I don’t understand about this set photo is how Wolverine is even having a battle against a guy with a sword unless the sword is adamantium.  Adamantium swords would be awesome.

Hit the jump to check out the set photo.  The film also stars Will Yun Lee, Brian Tee, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto, and Svetlana KhodchenkovaThe Wolverine opens in 3D on July 26th.

Earlier this week, we got our first look at the highly-anticipated new series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  The new series takes place after The Avengers, and has Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) leading a new team of S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives against supernatural forces.  Today, seven more seconds of precious footage have been released, and Coulson announces “Welcome to Level 7″.  Some may wonder, “What is Level 7″?  I wonder if these incredibly brief snippets of footage will be a consistent thing throughout the summer.  If so, that’s incredibly obnoxious.  The people who would watch seven seconds of footage are already going to see the show.  Provide real trailers or keep the show under wraps (I suspect the next major look at the show will come during Comic-Con).

Hit the jump to watch seven seconds of footage because you’re already going to see the show.  The series also stars also stars Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Chloe BennetAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres Tuesdays this fall on ABC. [Update: ABC has released a full 3-minute trailer for the series, which is now included after the jump.]

Pixar continues to roll out Toy Story shorts, and this Halloween we’ll be getting another one.  Disney has announced that they’ll be releasing Toy Story of Terror on ABC.  According to TV Guide, the short will be 30-minutes long, and has the toys staying in a motel after Bonnie takes them on a road trip only to have the car break down along the way.  Once inside the spooky motel, one of the toys goes missing, and “the rest of the gang will find themselves caught up in a mysterious sequence of events that must be solved before they all suffer the same fate.”  The short will appeal to kids, but adults should enjoy references to Psycho, Aliens, and Predator.  One of the Predator references could be the return of Combat Carl (from the first movie), who will be voiced by Carl Weathers.  The gang will be joined by Toy Story 3 toys, Mr. Pricklepants (Timothy Dalton) and Trixie (Kristen Schaal).

First Two Trailers for Time Travel Romantic Comedy ABOUT TIME Starring Rachel McAdams and Domnhall Gleeson [Updated with Poster and Images]

Working Title has released the first trailer for director Richard Curtis’ (Love Actually) new film About Time.  The pic puts a time travel spin on the classic romantic comedy conceit, as Domnhall Gleeson (Bill Weasley from Harry Potter) plays a man who has inherited the ability to travel through time from his father (Bill Nighy).  Naturally, Gleeson’s character uses his time travel prowess to woo the girl of his dreams (Rachel McAdams), but as with all time travel stories, the powers come with grave consequences.  Curtis has a knack for making familiar stories interesting and endearing, and About Time looks to be no different.  I like the earnestness with which the film is approached, and Gleeson seems poised to break out in a big way.

Director Bryan Singer has shared a new image from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and it’s a perfect encapsulation of the mix of new and familiar that the film’s story involves.  We see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Nicholas Hoult’s Beast standing side-by-side in Professor X’s familiar underground hallway, but they’re decked out in 1970s clothes given that the year is 1973.  It’s a fantastic tease for fans, as we see that Hoult’s Dr. Hank McCoy has somehow found a way to suppress his Beastly appearance.  Interesting…

Spidey and Paul Giamatti’s Rhino Square Off in New Images from the Set of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

by     Posted: May 13th, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Another batch of images from the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have landed online, and they appear to be a continuation of the sequence that was snapped yesterday involving Spidey, a bus, and Paul Giamatti’s villain Rhino.  In these new images, Andrew Garfield’s titular character comes face-to-face with Giamatti’s villainous Rhino and the two become involved in a bit of a skirmish that ends, well, somewhat cartoonishly.

Hit the jump to take a look at the images.  The film also stars Emma Stone, Dane DeHaan, Shailene Woodley, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper, and Sally Field.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.

Picturehouse has released the first image from director Nimrod Antal’s (Predators) upcoming concert movie/narrative feature hybrid Metallica Through the Never.  The film stars Dane DeHaan as a band crew member who is sent out on a mission during a live Metallica concert.  DeHaan’s character soon finds that his life has turned completely upside down.  The footage of DeHaan’s character is interspersed with actual concert footage, and during Steve’s recent interview with the actor he described the pic as “a concert movie meets The Wall meets Metallica.”

Hit the jump to check out the first image from the film, which shows DeHaan’s character in a rather chaotic situation.  Metallica Through the Never opens exclusively in IMAX theaters on September 27th and expands into additional theaters on October 4th.

New Set Photos and Video from ROBOCOP Starring Joel Kinnaman

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything on Jose Padilha‘s remake of RoboCop.  The film was originally scheduled to open in August, but was pushed back to next February.  The last time we saw anything from the movie was in November, but now some new set photos and video have surfaced.  These images show off the costume in greater detail, and while there’s been some inevitable grumbling, I like the new look.  The original outfit is iconic, and this isn’t a radical departure, but it has enough of its own flavor to pay homage while still finding away to stand apart.  As for the video, fast motorcycles are fast.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos and video.  The film stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel and Jackie Earle HaleyRoboCop opens February 7th, 2014.
