Ben Kingsley Says He Recently Finished Filming on a Secret Marvel Project

[If you haven't seen Iron Man 3 yet, stop reading this article] One of the best film twists in recent years was how Shane Black handled the reveal of the Iron Man’s arch-nemesis, The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley).  It wasn’t just a hilarious surprise, but also a clear sign that Marvel was going to do what was best for their movie rather than try to work around fidelity to the comics (also, there wasn’t much complaining when Ben Kingsley was cast even though he’s not Chinese).  Black and Marvel decided to have their Mandarin turn out to be an adorably clueless actor/drug-addict named Trevor Slattery.  The character was originally supposed to die at the end of Iron Man 3, but thankfully they kept him around, and now it appears we’ll be seeing him again.

The Odeon Leicester Square in London was surrounded by eager science fiction fans when I approached the cinema for the Ender’s Game Q&A fan event, being held for the MCM London Comic-Con. The book (by controversial author Orson Scott Card) has its fans and the crowd was there to see the film’s cast and crew. Stars Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld and Sir Ben Kingsley were in attendance, joined by the film’s director, Gavin Hood and producers Gigi Pritzker and Roberto Orci. However, the crowd really turned-out for the one and only Harrison Ford. The iconic Star Wars actor was his usual dry self as he took to the stage to discuss the film with his colleagues. There was a buzz in the air and clear excitement as he took to the stage to discuss the film in the lead-up to its release.

An Alien reunion is in the works.  Ripley herself Sigourney Weaver has been tapped to join the cast of director Ridley Scott’s Moses epic Exodus, along with John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul.  Scott is putting together an impressive cast for the pic, with Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton already set to play Moses and Ramses, respectively.  Variety reports that Weaver will play Tuya, the mother of Ramses, while Turturro has been tapped to play Ramses’ father Seti and Paul is in talks to portray a Hebrew slave alongside Bale’s Moses.  Additionally, Deadline reports that Ben Kingsley is in talks to join the cast as a Hebrew scholar.

Steven Zaillian (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) penned the script for Exodus, and Scott is looking to start production in September in England, Spain, and Morocco.  This will mark the first time that Scott and Weaver have worked together in quite a while, though Exodus will see Weaver playing a considerably different role than that of her Alien heroine.

Ben Kingsley Runs through His Accents in New Deleted Scene from IRON MAN 3

I have a tough time deciding which part of Ben Kingsley‘s Iron Man 3 performances I enjoy more: the Mandarin side or the Trevor side.  Earlier this week, we got a deleted scene featuring the former, and now we have one with the latter.  The scene shows the hapless Trevor going through a host of accents at Rhodey’s (Don Cheadle) request.  It’s pretty funny, but there’s a huge missed opportunity to have Trevor to do an Indian accent.

Deleted Scene from IRON MAN 3 Featuring Ben Kingsley as “The Mandarin” [UPDATED with Gag Reel]

I almost feel like whenever we refer to Ben Kingsley as “The Mandarin”, quotes are now required to indicate the misleading name of the character.  Some people will never forgive the movie for the bait-and-switch because they wanted to see the Mandarin from the comics, which they were probably never going to get in the movie Iron Man world Marvel had been established.  There wasn’t going to be a guy with ten magic rings, and while I understand Iron Man 3 had a radical reinvention of the character for the screen, it was still highly entertaining.  For those who can’t get enough of co-writer and director Shane Black‘s take on the character, a deleted scene from the upcoming Iron Man 3 Blu-ray has been released online, and it features Kingsley in his hammy Mandarin persona.

Summit Entertainment has released the final trailer for director Gavin Hood‘s adaptation of Ender’s Game.  The film tells the story of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills in order to save the world from an impending alien invasion.  As someone who hasn’t read the book, I was pretty underwhelmed by the previous trailers.  However, this final look at the film does a nice job of selling the massive scope of Ender’s Game, and it finally gets across the stakes that Ender faces.  The visual effects are mighty impressive and the ensemble cast is more than proven, so here’s hoping Hood delivers a worthwhile adaptation.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a trailer for a trailer, but Summit Entertainment is here to fill that void with a preview look at tomorrow’s new Ender’s Game trailer.  The film tells the story of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills in order to save the world from an impending alien invasion.  With the release date looming closer, a larger portion of the film’s visual effects are ready for public viewing, so this trailer smartly appears to be selling the pic’s impressive visuals, along with more Harrison Ford growling.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer preview, and check back here tomorrow, August 6th at 9am PST to watch the full new trailer.  The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, and Abigail Breslin.  Ender’s Game opens November 1st.

Summit Entertainment has released the final poster for Gavin Hood’s adaptation of Ender’s Game.  The film tells the story of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills in order to save the world from an impending alien invasion.  This poster has a good chance at winning the year’s silliest tagline with “This Is Not A Game” and then immediately following it with a title that has the word “game” in the title.  Then you follow it up with face-boxes to let people know that this isn’t just a movie about an astronaut and his gigantic 8-sided dice.

Summit Entertainment has released six new character posters for Ender’s Game.  The film tells the story of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills in order to save the world from an impending alien invasion.  Rather than give you the names of the actors, these new posters provide the character names, so these are more for the fans of the book since the name “Hyrum Graff” doesn’t really mean anything to the uninitiated other than “Harrison Ford is playing a guy named Hyrum Graff.  That’s an odd name.”  Fans will note that Major Anderson’s gender has been changed to female for the movie, which isn’t a big deal, especially when you have a talented actress like Viola Davis for the role.

First Teaser Trailer and Poster for THE BOXTROLLS, from the Makers of CORALINE and PARANORMAN

the-boxtrolls-slice

Focus Features has released the first teaser trailer and poster for the upcoming animated feature The Boxtrolls.  The film comes from Laika, the stop-motion animation studio behind Coraline and last year’s excellent ParaNorman, and tells the tale of the titular trolls who live underneath the streets of Cheesebridge.  Legend has it that the Boxtrolls steal the townspeople’s children and cheese, but the truth of the matter is that the monsters are raising an orphaned human boy named Eggs as one of their own.  This teaser unsurprisingly shows off some gorgeous animation and character creation from Laika, while also teasing a charming story about misunderstood outsiders.  In an animation marketplace dominated by unprovoking, inoffensive family fare, Laika is truly doing something unique by telling stories that reflect our ever-changing social culture and the “modern family.”

Hit the jump to check out the teaser trailer and poster.  Directed by Anthony Stacchi (Open Season) and Graham Annable, the film features the voices of Ben Kingsley, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan.  The Boxtrolls is due out September 26, 2014.

5 Character Posters for ENDER’S GAME Starring Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, and Harrison Ford

Five character posters have been released for Gavin Hood‘s adaptation of Ender’s Game.  The film tells the story of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills and, hopefully, save the world from an impending alien invasion.  We previously saw some propaganda-style posters, and we also found out that the movie would have a major presence at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.  These five character posters are kind of bland unless you need a new poster of Harrison Ford glowering at you.  Nothing gets people in the seats like a good Ford glower.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Viola Davis, Khylin Rhambo, Moises Arias, and Ben KingsleyEnder’s Game opens November 1st. [Update: we have removed the posters at the request of the studio.]

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for director Gavin Hood’s anticipated adaptation of the Orson Scott Card novel Ender’s Game.  The film tells the story of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills and, hopefully, save the world from an impending alien invasion.  I plan to read the book before I see the movie, but was someone who is unfamiliar with the material, nothing in this trailer really leaps out at me.  It feels like they’re pushing a Hunger Games-vibe (putting a heavy burden on young adults) plus a lot of CG.  Also, Harrison Ford sounds really bored even though his narration is about trying to save humanity from annihilation.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Viola Davis, Khylin Rhambo, Moises Arias, and Ben Kingsley.  Ender’s Game opens on November 1st.

TOP 5: IRON MAN 3, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Video Blog Review, PACIFIC RIM Trailer, Michael B. Jordan Next Human Torch?, WHITE HOUSE DOWN Trailer

Marvel makes it look easy. That’s what kept running through my head while watching Iron Man 3 Thursday night. Pumping out one solid standalone film after another with the overall goal of creating a whole that is equally, if not more, entertaining than its formidable parts can’t be that easy. And yet, Marvel makes it seem that way. In a medium outside of their native reach no less. Granted, Iron Man 3 isn’t without its flaws. But it doesn’t have to be. It succeeds on the exact level it’s meant to: in moving both the individual character and universal stories ahead in an entertaining and logical way. If “Marvel makes it looks easy” was my primary takeaway from IM3, “DC has their work cut out for them” isn’t far behind.

But enough Marvel love for one opening paragraph. In this week’s Top 5 we’ve got Iron Man 3 interviews with director Shane Black and more, a video blog review for Star Trek Into Darkness, the Pacific Rim trailer from WonderCon, Fox’s courting of Michael B. Jordan the the role of Human Torch in its upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, and the new trailer for Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx‘s White House Down.
