Bruce Willis to Lead EXPIRATION; Uma Thurman to Play Anita Bryant in ANITA, Garrett Hedlund Replaces Jason Clarke in MOJAVE

We have a few casting stories for you this afternoon.  First up, Bruce Willis is set to lead the thriller Expiration.  According to Variety, Willis plays “a hitman who is poisoned and has to find a cure before he expires.”  So it’s like D.O.A. but probably with a lot more killing of other people.  The film is currently in negotiations for a director, and the script is from Broken City scribe Brian Tucker.  What’s slightly damning about this production is that it’s from producers Randall Emmett and George Furla.  The duo previously produced the Willis films Setup and Fire with Fire.  While Willis didn’t lead those movies, they still went direct-to-DVD.  Then again, they also co-starred talking mannequin 50 Cent, so perhaps Expiration will be better if they leave him out of it.

Hit the jump for casting news on Anita and Mojave.

New posters have been released from The Lone Ranger, Red 2, Star Trek Into Darkness, and I, Frankenstein.  Briefly, The Lone Ranger international poster has the Lone Ranger in danger of falling into Helena Bonham Carter‘s cleavage, the gang is all there in the Red 2 poster, the Enterprise is still seriously screwed in the latest poster for Star Trek Into Darkness, and then there’s the first poster for I, Frankenstein.  It’s a “motion poster”, but it will be holographic when you see it at your local theater.  It doesn’t have a close-up of Aaron Eckhart as the monster, but at a distance, he’s the most handsome iteration of the creature to date.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The Lone Ranger opens on July 3rd.  Red 2 opens July 19th.  Star Trek Into Darkness opens in IMAX 3D on Wednesday and in 2D and 3D on Thursday.  I, Frankenstein opens in 3D on January 24th. [Update: The Star Trek Into Darkness poster was not approved by the studio, and we have removed it at their request.]

Summit Entertainment has released a new trailer for director Dean Parisot’s (Galaxy Quest) action-comedy sequel Red 2.  The spy follow-up pits ex-CIA operative Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) against Victoria (Helen Mirren) when MI6 greenlights his assassination as Interpol’s “Most Wanted.”  This trailer introduces us to the film’s new characters, as Anthony Hopkins plays a living MacGuffin (similar to John Hurt‘s character in Crystal Skull) and Catherine Zeta-Jones plays an old flame of Willis’ character who joins the group to combat a common enemy.  Byung Hun Lee appears to bring some freshness to the film’s action sequences, and the humorous tone is spot-on thanks to the sensibilities of Parisot.  All in all, Red 2 looks to be quite the fun ride.

New Character Posters RED 2 Featuring Bruce Willis and John Malkovich

A couple of new character posters have been released for director Dean Parisot’s (Galaxy Quest) Red 2, a much-anticipated sequel to an indulgently fun summer blockbuster franchise.  The new posters showcase stars Bruce Willis and John Malkovich in all of their “retired” glory.  The sequel finds Frank Moses (Willis) pitted against Victoria (Helen Mirren) when M16 gives the go ahead to his assassination by declaring him Interpol’s “most wanted.” All the while, Moses and his team work to track down a missing nuclear device.  Mary-Louise Parker will return while Catherine Zeta Jones, Byung Hun, and Anthony Hopkins join the cast.

Although Red 2 looks indulgent (much like The Expendables franchise), we all can admit that we like to watch Willis blow stuff up and we enjoy seeing Malkovich, well, be himself.  Hit the jump to check out the new posters and to read the full synopsis.  Red 2 opens on July 19th.

Two character featurettes for director Jon M. Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation are now available. One centers on the Joe’s namesake, Joe Colton (Bruce Willis) who re-enlists to join the team in their fight against Cobra.  While it’s fun to listen to Willis talk about playing with the titular toys as a kid, the really entertaining featurette centers on Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee).  We get to see a revisit of the origin story between Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes (Ray Park), plus commentary from Lee, Chu, Park and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Definitely worth a watch, especially since we get a previously-unheard bit of dialogue from RZA.

Also starring Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson and Adrianne Palicki, G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens March 28th.  Hit the jump to watch the featurettes.

The last weekend of March promises to be an exciting one. Not only do we get the return of Game of Thrones , but the long-delayed G.I. Joe: Retaliation finally blasts its way into theaters. A new minute-long clip from the film debuted online earlier today, featuring none other than Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis.

The clip’s not so very different from what we’ve seen in the various trailers and TV spots, though this clip shows a little bit more of the scene in which Willis’ Joe Colton announces his decision to reenlist. Oh yeah, and he’s got a pretty sweet pair of wheels too. Directed by John Chu, the film also features Channing TatumRay StevensonWalton GogginsRay Park, and, of course, a whole other host of ninjas.  Hit the jump to see the boys in all their badass glory. G.I. Joe Carnahan Doesn’t Have a DEATH WISH; Studio Wants Bruce Willis to Star

Last summer, macho director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) talked about his vision for a remake of Death Wish, but it looks like that view didn’t jibe with the studio.  As of August, Carnahan was still in the process of scripting the reboot of the 1974 movie starring Charles Bronson that kick-started a five-film franchise.  Originally based on the Brian Garfield novel of the same name, Death Wish centers on Paul Kersey, a man who becomes a vigilante after his wife is murdered and his daughter is sexually assaulted by muggers.  The studio wanted Bruce Willis to step into the role while Carnahan had other ideas, thus leading to a split over creative differences.  Hit the jump for more.

TOP 5: A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD, THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES Set Visit, VES Awards Interviews, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, Toy Fair 2013

Before I dive headfirst into what could be considered overselling to the “nth degree”, I have a disclaimer: I’m a total sucker for nostalgia-inducing, high school-centric, coming of age films. With that out of the way, I cannot recommend enough that you watch author/writer/director Stephen Chboksy‘s adaptation of his own novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, as soon as possible. The pic hit Blu-ray/DVD this past week and over the course of 24 hours I rented it, watched it, loved it, returned it (yes, somehow late fees are still a thing…), and purchased it for my own collection. I could go on and on about the emotional note the movie hit for me at every turn but I’ll spare you the fanboy torment. Suffice to say that I’ll be looking back fondly on this one for quite a while.

My “Blu-ray/DVD pick of the week” aside, this week’s installment features a week of Die Hard that includes Matt revisiting the entire franchise and A Good Day to Die Hard interviews with Bruce Willis and more, coverage from Steve’s visit to the set of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, a slew of video interviews from this year’s VES Awards including talks with Ang Lee and Wally Pfister just to name a few, Beautiful Creatures interviews with Emmy Rossum and more, and a healthy amount of images from the floor of Toy Fair 2013. Yep, you guessed it, a brief recap and link to each of the above can be found on the other side.

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD Review

Over the last few days, I’ve looked back at the Die Hard franchise, and tried to explain what makes these films unique.  The obvious answer is John McClane (Bruce Willis).  Willis helped to craft a memorable character who was the wise-cracking, scrappy, desperate hero we can all root for.  But it’s not simply an attitude.  Die Hard is a matter of circumstance and response, and the two best films—Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance—back McClane into a corner and force him to rely on his wits and strength to survive.  He gets the shit kicked out of him, swears constantly, but laughs in the face of near death.  John McClane’s personality lives in A Good Day to Die Hard.  Everything else dies horribly.
