Last night, Captain America: The Winter Soldier played for press in Los Angeles, and while full reviews are embargoed until March 20th, reporters were free to tweet out their reactions.  We’ve collected some of those tweets, and the praise was effusive.  Steve was among those who saw the film, and tweeted afterwards, “The CAPTAIN AMERICA sequel blew me away. Movie has a fantastic script, amazing action, and great character moments. Just about perfect.”  Earlier this morning, he added “if you missed tweets from last night: CAPTAIN AMERICA sequel is fantastic on every level. Fanboys and casual moviegoers are going to love it” and “until I see it again I won’t say exactly how it compares to other Marvel films, but it’s easily one of the best they’ve ever done.”  Captain America: The First Avenger is my favorite movie of Phase One, and it’s wonderful that the sequel is receiving such high praise; now it’s up to the rest of us to try and keep our expectations in check.

Hit the jump to check some more Twitter reactions.  The film stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Maximiliano Hernández, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. JacksonCaptain America: The Winter Soldier opens in 3D on April 4th.

Screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus Talk Writing a Conspiracy Thriller, Conflicting Moral Styles, and More on the Set of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

While on our set visit to Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, our small group of journalists had a chance to interview screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus.  The pens behind the sequel, McFeely and Markus are responsible for sending Cap (Chris Evans) along a path fraught with danger and betrayal, as befits their inspirational material: Ed Brubaker’s “Winter Soldier” storyline and 70s political thriller movies.

While on set, McFeely and Markus talked about deciding to write a conspiracy thriller, Steve Rogers as “A Man Out of Time”, comic book and film influences, the conflicting moral styles of Captain America and Black Widow, and having the movie stand on its own merits rather than setting up a future installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Hit the jump for the Captain America 2 interview.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was one of my most anticipated films of 2014 before I had a chance to visit the set with a small group of journalists.  After what I learned there, the Marvel sequel easily jumped to #1 on my list, and now that I can share that previously secretive information with you, you’ll see why.  While Chris Evans might be the lead, this interview centers on Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon, played by the charming and witty Anthony Mackie.

While on set, Mackie talked about his familiarity with the character thanks to his brother, which version of the Falcon he prefers, his wings, doing his biggest stunt on Day 1 of shooting, and his on-screen relationships with Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. Jackson.  Hit the jump for the interview.

As part of our set visit to Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, I had a chance to interview directors Joe and Anthony Russo as part of a behind-the-scenes look at the sequel for a small group of lucky reporters.  These guys know their stuff.  Not just comedy, as fans of their work on Community and Arrested Development surely know, but also the comic book source material, and the genre of political thrillers, which grounds this movie in an incredibly exciting way.

While on set, the Russo brothers talked about how they landed the directing job, being such huge fans of genre, working with this talented cast, balancing character screen time and relationships, modernizing the fighting style, and the all-important Easter eggs.  The real stinger here is that something major happens in this film’s third act that will impact the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe!  Hit the jump for the interview.

First NINJA TURTLES Trailer to Debut with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Production took place on director Jonathan Liebesman’s (Battle: Los Angeles) upcoming Ninja Turtles early last year, but we still have yet to see so much as an official image from that film.  That is poised to change very soon, as producer Galen Walker has revealed on his Facebook (via CS) that the first trailer for the film will debut in front of Captain America: The Winter Soldier when the Marvel film opens on April 4th.  Not much is known about the plot of Ninja Turtles, but the titular turtles are being created using performance capture technology with Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, and Noel Fisher assuming the physical roles.  Produced by Michael Bay, the cast also includes Megan Fox as April O’Neil, William Fichtner as Shredder, Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld) as Splinter, and Will Arnett in an as-yet undisclosed role.

It’ll certainly be interesting to get a first look at this film, especially since we have no idea what kind of tone Liebesman has struck for the comic book adaptation. Ninja Turtles opens in theaters on August 8th.

ABC to Air Sneak Peek at THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON on One-Hour Special MARVEL STUDIOS: ASSEMBLING A UNIVERSE

All hail corporate synergy!  Because Disney owns ABC and Marvel, next month the network will air a one-hour special, Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe, which “goes behind the scenes of the comic-media empire.”  It basically sounds like an hour-long commercial for their own product, but I doubt fanboys will mind.  The special will provide ‘a “sneak peek” of an undisclosed nature from next year’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” as well as new footage from Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.  There will also be some promotion of the deeply disappointing Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which will include footage from upcoming episodes.

Hit the jump for more.  Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe will premiere Tuesday, March 18th at 8:00pm.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4th; Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st; and The Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1, 2015.

One of the new characters I’m looking forward to seeing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is Sam Wilson (a.k.a. Falcon) played by Anthony Mackie (Pain & Gain).  Falcon is one of the good guys, and he’ll be fighting alongside Cap (Chris Evans) in the upcoming superhero film.  Today, Marvel has released a character poster for Falcon featuring the wings he uses to fly (the codename is not misleading).  The studio previously released posters for Captain America, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford).

Yesterday, Walt Disney Company CEO and Chairman Robert Iger told investors that Captain America: The Winter Soldier will “set critical events in motion” that lead to The Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Admittedly, this isn’t Earth-shattering news, but it’s good to have the confirmation.  Even though Winter Soldier will be followed on the calendar by Guardians of the Galaxy, the two worlds don’t click together as well as Guardians did with Thor: The Dark WorldThe Wrap also reports that Iger also said events in the second Captain America would “be reflected” in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which would be exciting except we already got that bait-and-switch with Thor 2.  If you missed that episode, you didn’t really miss anything, much like the rest of the series.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in 3D on April 4th, and stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Maximiliano Hernández, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. International Trailer for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Reveals First Look Agent 13

Last night during the Super Bowl, Marvel previewed its next film Captain America: The Winter Soldier followed by an excellent full trailer that landed online shortly afterwards.  The sequel—directed by Anthony and Joe Russo—continues to look fantastic, and a Spanish cut of last night’s new trailer offers us our first very brief look at Agent 13 aka Sharon Carter, played by Emily VanCamp.  I’m not entirely sure why Disney marketing decided to add this tiny bit of footage into the Spanish version of the trailer and leave it out of the U.S. cut, but nevertheless it’s a preview of the comics character in action for fans that are curious to get a peek at VanCamp’s Sharon Carter.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, which is dubbed entirely in Spanish.  The film also stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, and Robert RedfordCaptain America: The Winter Soldier opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on April 4th.

Yesterday, Marvel released new posters and images for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and we ran our on-set interview with Chris Evans.  Today, Marvel has released another poster for the movie along with a teaser for their Super Bowl ad.  I usually find ads for ads obnoxious, but I suppose if you’re going to spend $4.5 million for 30 seconds of airtime, it doesn’t hurt to try and ramp up anticipation among the people who aren’t tuning into the Super Bowl for football.

Hit the jump to check out the poster and “Big Game” teaser (it’s adorable how they can’t say “Super Bowl”).  The film also stars Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Maximiliano Hernández, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. JacksonCaptain America: The Winter Soldier opens in 3D on April 4th.
