From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is the third in a trilogy of films that bring the masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, to life.  It is an epic conclusion to the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves, who have reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, but have unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world.  And there are even greater dangers ahead, as darkness converges on their escalating conflict, and the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must either unite or be destroyed while the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

While at Comic-Con for a presentation in Hall H, Peter Jackson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andy Serkis, Evangeline Lilly, Cate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom spoke to press at a conference, in which they talked about why the title of the third film changed, the progression of the tone, from the first film to this one, perfecting the voices of Smaug and Gollum, the creation of Tauriel, the experience of revisiting characters from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and how long it might be before any of the films get remade.  Peter Jackson also talked about why The Silmarillion will probably never get adapted for film, and how he feels about a new King Kong film.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

sleepy-hollow-season-2-interview-tom-mison-alex-kurtzman-comic-con

The unusual premise of the hit Fox series Sleepy Hollow combines supernatural elements with a police drama format.  Marketed as a modern-day retelling of the short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving, the show takes the same liberties with history as Once Upon a Time does with fairy tales, as facts and myths are tweaked slightly to fit within the show’s universe.

Season 2 begins on September 22nd, and has been bumped up in size from 13 to 18 episodes, so that fans can get even more monsters.  Before greeting their fans at the panel, co-stars Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie, along with showrunner Mark Goffman and executive producer Alex Kurtzman, spoke with press about what to expect in the upcoming season.  Hit the jump for highlights from those interviews.

Even in a year full of excellent science-fiction fare, Joon-ho Bongs Snowpiercer stands out.  The film tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world where all life on Earth is contained to a single luxury train that circles the frozen planet once yearly.  Within the train, a tightly controlled caste system has developed.  When members of the train’s underclass attempt a rebellion, all hell breaks loose and long held secrets of this world come to light.  The movie stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, The Hosts Kang-ho Song and Ah-sung Ko, Ed Harris, John Hurt,, Jamie Belle, Octavia Spencer and Alison Pill is available in theaters and most every VOD marketplace now.  But it really, really should be seen on the big screen.

Last weekend at Comic-Con, Collider sat down with Evans and Co-Producer Dooho Choi for an intimate press conference to discuss the film.  During the small group chat, Evans and Choi described Bong’s artistic vision, the elaborate fight scenes, avoiding the Harvey Scissorhands treatment, why a film with so many stars and such good reviews hit VOD two weeks after theatrical, the magic of Tilda Swinton, crooked-necked giraffes, watching a cut of the first two acts before the final day of principal photography and more.  Hit the jump for the full transcript.

Paramount Pictures has released a third Interstellar trailer for director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi drama.  The film stars Matthew McConaughey and revolves around a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole “to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”  I am so incredibly looking forward to this film and love how this new trailer expands upon the second one from a few months ago.  You really get a sense of the film’s scope and cosmic elements.  I’m really hoping this film sticks the landing like Inception did for me, when Nolan is really inspired in his work (unlike TDKR), it’s really something to behold.

The titular family in The Originals is always caught between having each other’s back and going for each other’s throat, so it’s no easy trick to be the girl stuck in a love triangle with two Original brothers.  Yet somehow Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), the lady in question, managed to make it through the first season – kind of.  Before taking the stage for a Comic-Con panel I sat down with Tonkin for a roundtable interview.  She talked about Hayley’s mental state at the start of season two, how she’s dealing with the loss of Hope, her relationships with Elijah (Danielle Gilles) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan), her experience filming the emotional season one finale, and more.  Hit the jump to see what she had to say about The Originals season 2, and please be aware there are major season one spoilers.

Comic-Con: Guillermo del Toro Talks CRIMSON PEAK, the Horror of Gothic Romance, Taking a Painterly Visual Approach, Designing 3 Types of Ghosts, More

guillermo-del-toro-crimson-peak-interview-comic-con

With Crimson Peak, in theaters October 2015, Guillermo del Toro is making his highly anticipated return to the ghost story (his last being the absolutely excellent and freaky-as-hell The Devil’s Backbone in 2001).  As one of the most creative, knowledgeable and passionate filmmakers in the genre, and backed with an insanely talented cast,  del Toro is poised to deliver a first-rate creepfest bolstered by his trademark emotional heft and visual panache.  Crimson Peak stars Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Jim Beaver, Doug Jones, and Javier Botet.

Following his Hall H Panel on Saturday (read Adam’s full recap right here) I had an opportunity to sit down for an interview with del Toro.  He talked about whether or not we can hope to see his Hall H footage online any time soon, blending the Gothic romance and the ghost story, how horror is borne out of love, creating a film that looks like a painting, inventing multiple kinds of ghosts unlike any you’ve ever seen, and more.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Alexandre Aja Talks HORNS, The Perks of Working with Daniel Radcliffe, Blending Genres, His Approach to Adapting a Book, and More at Comic-Con

by     Posted 56 days ago

alexandre-aja-horns-interview

With Horns, arriving in theaters October 31st, we get to see a softer side of Alexandre AjaHorns stars Daniel Radcliffe as Ig Perrish, a grieving man widely believed to have raped and murdered his beloved girlfriend Merrin (Juno Temple).  When Ig wakes up with a set of horns and a newfound ability to make people do and say the most devious of their desires, he sees it as an opportunity to seek revenge on the real killer.  As a director and producer known for intense horror films (The Hills Have Eyes, High Tension) it’s fun to watch Aja stretch his range and deliver some genuinely sweet romance and touching dramatic moments.  However, fans don’t need to fear he’s lost his horror touch – Horns also delivers on genre elements, including some beautifully bloody practical effects.

Before his Comic-Con panel on Friday, I sat down for a one-on-one interview with Aja.  He talked about navigating through so many genres in a single film, why he loves Joe Hill‘s novel, whether or not adapting a novel is different from remaking a film, casting Daniel Radcliffe, and More.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.
