RUSH Review

For the past decade, I’ve approached Ron Howard‘s films with a mix of trepidation and outright dread.  Apollo 13 is an amazing piece of filmmaking, but from there, he’s seemed content to play it safe to the point of inertia.  A Beautiful Mind may be daring in its direction, but its story is worthy of a TV movie.  Considering the horrors of the Robert Langdon movies, the unwatchable Oscar-bait Cinderella Man, and the low-ball The Dilemma, my skepticism towards his latest picture, Rush, was more than warranted.  Thankfully, Howard seems to be alive again as he goes full throttle on taking the viewer inside the world of Formula 1 racing.  More importantly, he has a worthwhile story at the center.  While Howard still feels the need to spoon-feed the themes, the strong performances and intensity of the racing scenes make his latest picture a ride worth taking.

A new clip from Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate features a clash of ideals between Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) over how to handle their involvement in the information war.  It’s a great look at the relationship between the two activists and the tone of the film itself, just as yesterday’s behind-the-scenes featurette gave audiences a look at the ideology that went into the making of the film.  You can also read up on Matt’s review of the film from TIFF 2013 here.

Exclusive: Daniel Brühl to Star in Michael Winterbottom’s THE FACE OF AN ANGEL Based on Amanda Knox Murder Trial

Director Michael Winterbottom’s The Face of an Angel, a project bringing the events surrounding Amanda Knox’s murder trial to the big screen, has landed Daniel Brühl in the film’s lead.  Steve landed the scoop earlier today at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival while speaking to Brühl for his work in Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate.   You can read Matt’s review on that film here.

Back on the topic of The Face of an Angel, Paul Viragh (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll) adapted the novel Angel Face: Sex, Murder and the Inside Story of Amanda Knox by Barbie Latza Nadeau.  When last we reported on this film, Colin Firth was involved in its development.  Rather than focusing on Knox specifically, Winterbottom previously said, “I have no view on whether they did it, the film will not be about that. There is unlikely to be a character playing Knox.  I talked to Firth about the idea of playing a journalist or a writer.”  It sounds as if Brühl will now be taking on that role.  Hit the jump for more.

TIFF 2013: THE FIFTH ESTATE Review

Our modes of storytelling change with technology.  As we see in the opening credits of Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate, we’ve gone from cave paintings to hieroglyphics to the written word to the printing press to the typewriter and currently to the computer.  But as The Fifth Estate shows, some stories stay the same, and in the case of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, the story is “power corrupts”.  Through the structure of a fast-paced, high-stakes thriller, Condon paints a compelling portrait both of Assange and the brave new world created by his controversial brand of journalism.  The film is occasionally beset with bursts of editorializing, both on the character of Assange and how WikiLeaks changed the world.  But Condon also raises fascinating questions regarding privacy and transparency, power and responsibility, and seeking “truth” in the digital age.

Now playing at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate has released a new featurette to appease those of us not lucky enough to be at the screening.  This behind-the-scenes look explains the meaning behind the title and features Condon along with stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl and more discussing the hazards of the information age.  There’s also an attempt to praise documentaries on the WikiLeaks scandal while distancing this film from them, claiming a balanced approach to telling the complicated story.

The film also stars Laura LinneyStanley TucciAnthony MackieDavid ThewlisPeter CapaldiDan StevensAlicia Vikander, and Carice van Houten.  The Fifth Estate opens in theaters on October 18th.  Hit the jump to watch the featurette.

Universal has released yet another trailer for Ron Howard’s Rush.  The film takes place in the world of Formula One racing, and chronicles the 1970s rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and British driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth).  This latest trailer turns the focus primarily on Hunt and his trajectory from playboy race car driver to serious competitor, and it looks like a compelling arc since it’s created through his conflict with Lauda.  It’s easy to suss out almost the entire story arc from what we’ve seen in all the trailers so far, but the flick could still be an exciting ride when it opens this fall thanks to the performances and the racing scenes.

First Trailer and New Images for THE FIFTH ESTATE Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Brühl

The first trailer for director Bill Condon’s (Kinsey) WikiLeaks film The Fifth Estate has been released online.  The film centers on the relationship between Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) and Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch), as the story follows the early days of WikiLeaks, culminating in the release of a series of controversial and history changing information leaks.  It’s tough to suss out the arc of the story from this trailer, and it ends up making The Fifth Estate look like an HBO movie; it an important event or person but somewhat directionless (e.g. Too Big to Fail).  But I have faith in Condon and this cast is too good to ignore.

New Featurette for Ron Howard’s RUSH Starring Chris Hemsworth

A new featurette has been released for Ron Howard‘s racing drama, Rush.  The film takes place in the world of Formula One racing, and chronicles the 1970s rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and British driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth).  Like an earlier trailer, we’re treated to almost the entire arc of the plot, but we also get Hemsworth, Bruhl, and Howard breaking down what they found compelling about the story and the characters.  I’m not sure what’s going to push this movie beyond a standard sports rivalry other than the life-or-death stakes, but I’m curious about the contrast between Hunt’s flamboyant personality and the serious Lauda.

New Trailer for Ron Howard’s RUSH Has a Need for Speed

A new trailer has been released for Ron Howard’s racing drama, Rush.  The film takes place in the world of Formula One racing, and chronicles the 1970s rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and British driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth).  The previous trailer basically showed the entire movie, but thankfully this one focuses on the speed of F1 racing and aggressiveness of the drivers.  Clearly, the movie won’t shy away from the personal drama of the lead characters, but I’m curious to see how Howard has handled the intensity of the racing scenes.  Judging by this trailer, he’s done a bang-up job.

Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for director Ron Howard’s racing drama Rush.  The film takes place in the world of Formula 1 racing and chronicles the 1970s rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and British driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth).  This trailer plays much better than the previous U.K. trailer, as we get a better sense of the individual character struggles in addition to Howard’s impressive visuals.  The racing sequences certainly look to be intense, but the highlight of this trailer for me is hearing some of Hans Zimmer‘s fantastic-sounding score.  As Matt noted previously, the key to the film’s success will be whether we care about the characters, so here’s hoping Rush is more Apollo 13 than The Da Vinci Code.

A batch of new images from Universal Pictures’ upcoming racing drama Rush has been released online.  Directed by Ron Howard, the film takes place in the world of Formula 1 racing and chronicles the 1970s rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and British driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth).  We got our first glimpse at footage by way of a U.K. trailer last week, but Universal is poised to drop the domestic trailer tomorrow and they’ve unveiled these images as an appetizer.  Hemsworth looks sufficiently handsome as notorious playboy Hunt, while Brühl appears to bring a fair amount of intensity to the Lauda role.

The first trailer for Ron Howard’s Rush is now online.  The film takes place in the world of Formula 1 racing and chronicles the 1970s rivalry between Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and British driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth).  It’s tough for me to get excited about Howard’s films since he hasn’t made a great one since Apollo 13.  He does have the talent to tell a good story, but after watching the trailer for Rush, the question remains: will we care about the rivalry between Lauda and Hunt, or will we just talk about the excellence of the racing scenes?

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Olivia Wilde.  Rush opens September 20th. [Update: We've added a track from Hans Zimmer's score for the film.  You can list to it after the jump.]
