TOP 5: THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE, OUT OF THE FURNACE Set Visit, Nolan Straps an IMAX Camera to a Learjet, DELIVERY MAN, NYMPHOMANIAC Trailer

Like many others I presume, I can reduce my yesterday down to one common denominator: waiting. Waiting for my Xbox One to arrive in the mail, waiting for the “Day One” update to wrap-up, waiting for Call of Duty: Ghosts to install to my hard drive, waiting for Ghosts‘ mandatory 1Gb update to complete. All told, it was about a two and a half hour process from the time my console arrived at my door until I was able to fire my first virtual shot. Although I’d be lying if I said the delays weren’t tedious, at the end of the day it was absolutely worth it. Microsoft’s next-gen console isn’t perfect, but its ambition and by-and-large its initial execution are pretty damn impressive. Controlling the console via voice commands with Kinect is way smoother than I expected it to be. Directing my satellite television via the console is a feature that I believe, when mastered, I’ll wonder how I ever lived without. And that seems to be the general idea of the Xbox One: to make you reconsider what a video game console can and should do. Even if all of the pieces aren’t in place yet to make it a “must have” (I expect a steady barrage of software updates in the coming days, weeks, months, etc.), I’m having too much fun with it right now to care.

My initial Xbox One impressions aside, this week’s Top 5 includes The Hunger Games: Catching Fire interviews with Jennifer Lawrence and more, Dave’s Out of the Furnace set visit recap, Christopher Nolan strapping an IMAX camera to a Learjet for Interstellar, Delivery Man interviews with Vince Vaughn and more, and a new trailer for Lars Von Trier‘s Nymphomaniac that you’ll likely only feel halfway guilty for watching. Per the drill, a brief recap and link to each of the above rests after the jump.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for writers/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s new film The LEGO Movie.  The story centers on Emmet (Chris Pratt), an average LEGO minifigure who is mistaken for the most extraordinary person in the LEGO world and is looked upon to save his people from an evil tyrant named President Business (Will Ferrell).  This trailer had me laughing out loud multiple times, which is no surprise when you consider that it comes from the hilariously twisted minds of Lord and Miller, the duo behind 21 Jump Street and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.  Pratt feels like pitch perfect casting as the film’s optimistic hero, and this trailer highlights some excellent use of LEGO’s more recognizable IP’s like Batman and Wonder Woman.  Is it February yet?

Lionsgate has released the final trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.  I’m sure the TV spots will probably have a little new footage, but this trailer gives us good pieces of the new arena, but also doesn’t forget to sell the major conflict, which is between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and President Snow (Donald Sutherland).  It’s almost entirely summed up in the shot where points an arrow at the sky and lets it fly.  Ultimately, this does what every good trailer should do: shows off some good stuff, but doesn’t give away anything major.

A batch of new images from director Francis Lawrence’s sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has landed online, giving us a closer look at the film’s large ensemble cast.  The story finds President Snow (Donald Sutherland) trying to crush a budding rebellion that was ignited by Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) actions in the previous film, as the 75th Hunger Games (aka Quarter Quell) finds past victors competing against each other.  I’m eager to see what Lawrence brings to the table as the new overseer of the franchise (he’s also directing Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2), and the previous trailers have been promising.

Lionsgate premiered a new trailer for at the Comic-Con panel for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and just posted it online.  The sequel finds Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) dealing with the after-effects of the first film as a nationwide uprising begins to swell.  The trailer does a good job of showing such an abstract idea as “stirring rebellion” with a variety of impressive crowd shots, and I like the tease of the new battlefield at the very end.  The books do a good job of upping the stakes with each new book, and I have every reason to believe so far that director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) captures that in the adaptation.

Elizabeth Banks Joins Beach Boys Biopic LOVE & MERCY and LITTLE ACCIDENTS

Elizabeth Banks has signed on to star in a pair of upcoming indie films.  First up, THR reports that Banks has joined the cast of director Bill Pohlad’s biopic of The Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson, titled Love & Mercy.  Banks will play Melinda Ledbetter, a former model who met Wilson in the 1980s and subsequently became his wife.  The pic will cover several decades of Wilson’s life as he struggles with mental illness and his relationship with Melinda.  Paul Dano and John Cusack are poised to play Wilson at different points in his life, and Paul Giamatti is also part of the cast.

Additionally, Banks has also been tapped to lead the indie Little Accidents.  Written and directed by Sara Colangelo, the film centers on the fallout in a small American coal town after a mining accident kills 12 men.  The pic is based on Colangelo’s short film of the same name, and Banks is now set to play the film’s lead opposite Boyd Holbrook.  The actress has been keeping plenty busy as of late, as she returns in this November’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and she toplines the comedy Walk of Shame, which opens next March.

International Trailer for THE LEGO MOVIE

After yesterday’s brief but great trailer for The LEGO Movie, and international version with new footage has gone online.  Reading over other responses to both trailers, some are pointing out that The LEGO Movie is a giant toy commercial, and that’s true, but it doesn’t really bother me as it would for some other movies.  Perhaps it’s because LEGO has eased us into accepting their creations as animated entertainment through Telltale’s video games, which feature animated and humorous cut scenes.  Also, even blockbuster movies that aren’t based on toys are designed to sell toys.  But mostly, it’s because The LEGO Movie looks like tons of fun, and I have full faith in directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, a duo that delivered two of my favorite movies of the past several years: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street.

Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer and poster for writers/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s new film The LEGO Movie.  The story centers on Emmet (Chris Pratt), an average LEGO minifigure who is mistaken for the most extraordinary person in the LEGO world and is looked upon to save his people from an evil tyrant named President Business (Will Ferrell).  The animation style is quite interesting, as it quite literally looks like a movie made out of LEGOs.  The trademark goofy comedy of writers/directors Lord and Miller that they so expertly displayed in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street is here in spades, as there are some excellent gags with regards to the numerous kinds of LEGO minifigs in existence.  We also get brief glimpses of Will Arnett‘s Batman and Morgan Freeman as a God-like character (what else?), and there are sure to be plenty more recognizable folks along the way.  Count this firmly among one of my most anticipated films of 2014.

While Rebel Wilson’s hosting gig at the MTV Movie Awards this past Sunday may not have been a hit with everyone, her performance with fellow Pitch Perfect cast members must have struck a chord.  Universal announced today during its presentation at CinemaCon that sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit is now in development for a planned 2015 release, and original writer Kay Cannon (30 Rock) is back on board as well.  Pitch Perfect focused on the world of collegiate a capella groups, detailing the struggles of an all-female group, the Barden Bellas, who desperately want to redeem themselves at the national championships.

The cast featured Wilson, Anna Kendrick, Anna Camp, Skylar Astin, Brittany Snow, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Hanna Mae Lee, and Ben Platt.  No word on if the entire cast, director Jason Moore, or producer and cast member Elizabeth Banks are returning, but as development progresses, we can expect those announcements to be released.  Hit the jump for more.
