Even though Joss Whedon dubbed Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) his Scarlet Witch “prototype” back in May, news surfaced in August that he had moved on to Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) for the role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Despite the fact that there were reports that Olsen was in final negotiations for the part, Marvel has yet to confirm her casting.  However, just the other month, Olsen’s Oldboy co-star, Samuel L. Jackson, came right out and said, “… we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch].”  Although everything points to Olsen having snagged the part of Wanda Maximoff, one half of the brother-sister duo, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, Marvel still hasn’t made it official.

While talking to the actress for her November 27th release, Oldboy, Collider got the chance to add yet another bullet point to the list of items suggesting Olsen did indeed get the part. Continued after the jump.

New Trailer and Images for OLDBOY; Josh Brolin Prefers 3-Hour Director’s Cut

FilmDistrict has released a green-band trailer and new images for Spike Lee‘s Oldboy.  For those unfamiliar with the story, it centers on a man (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  The new trailer is mostly the same as the red-band trailer but with a few bits of new footage.  I keep forgetting this movie is coming out, and then I get interested again once I remember.  There are definitely going to be some new twists and turns, but I’m still curious how far it will veer away from Park Chan-wook‘s excellent 2003 adaptation of the graphic novel.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, images, and comments from Brolin on why he prefers the director’s cut.  The film also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto CopleyLance Reddick, Michael Imperioli, and James RansoneOldboy opens on November 27th.

KILL YOUR DARLINGS Review

by     Posted 190 days ago

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.  Kill Your Darlings opens today in limited release.]

If poetry doesn’t broaden our view of our world and force us to push the boundaries of our lives, then it’s pointless. Poetry cannot always tap into the chaos and beauty of life if it must be constrained by meter, verse, and rules set down centuries ago. Poetry, when wielded by genius, can seduce, defend, condemn, and most importantly, transform. Words are powerful enough to change the world, but even in the hands of the most gifted writers, they can be futile against our frailties, insecurities, and desires. In his magnificent debut feature, director and co-writer John Krokidas has created a moving, exhilarating, and heartbreaking film in Kill Your Darlings. Led by breathtaking performances by stars Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, and Ben Foster, Kill Your Darlings watches the greatest writers of a generation push the boundaries of modern American culture only to find that even the best words, the most well-spoken words, the most honest words, can fail when spoken to a shattered heart.

First Clip Plus New Footage from Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Starring Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen

FilmDistrict has released the first clip from Spike Lee’s Oldboy.  The story centers on Joe Doucett (Josh Brolin), a who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  The clip does a good job of showing off Brolin’s intensity, and I look forward to see how it plays out beyond threatening Elizabeth Olsen’s character.  There’s also some new footage of Joe devouring dumplings as way to find a restaurant that could lead him to his captor.  This has inspired FilmDistrict to run a promotion where people should go to their local dim sum spot and tag a photo with #eattheclues for a chance to win the original hammer from the movie (how they’ll prove this is the real hammer and not something from Home Depot is beyond me).  I say the winner should be someone who goes to a restaurant, puts a live squid in his or her mouth, and sends in that photo.

As preparations are well underway for Marvel’s sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron, writer/director Joss Whedon continues to finalize his cast.  Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson are all poised to reprise their roles in the follow-up, and Whedon has added a few exciting new characters to the mix: brother/sister duo Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, and robot villain Ultron.  James Spader is signed on to play Ultron, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen are in different stages of negotiations for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, respectively.

Jackson—who just made a cameo on ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.—recently spoke a bit about the follow-up, confirming that Olsen will indeed be playing new Avengers member Scarlet Witch and noting that filming will begin next March in London.  Hit the jump for more.

FilmDistrict has released a behind-the-scenes featurette for director Spike Lee’s Oldboy, and it reveals a great deal of new footage from the reimagining of Park Chan-wook’s revenge classic.  The story centers on a man (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  In this featurette we see Lee, screenwriter Mark Protosevich, and the main cast discuss the film and Lee’s take on the material.  We also get to see to some very promising new footage, including a glimpse at Brolin’s iteration of the famous hallway fight scene.

TIFF 2013: THERESE Review

by     Posted 225 days ago

Guilt is a disease.  It’s not some fleeting emotion that can be easily squashed; sometimes it can fester and engulf one’s soul for a lifetime.  The consequences of guilt and how it overwhelms every aspect of one’s life—effectively imprisoning them—are explored in great detail in Emile Zola’s novel and play Therese Raquin, and director Charlie Stratton’s new adaptation focuses on these same issues while also visually conveying the weighing guilt with a fair amount of skill.  Unfortunately, the adaptation and its performances fail to provide any kind of emotional investment in the characters or story, resulting in a visually impressive but ultimately lifeless film.  Hit the jump for my review of Therese

Earlier this month, a teaser trailer was released for Kill Your Darlings, and now the full version has gone online.  The film focuses on the origins of the Beat movement and follows the volatile friendships of Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston), William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster), and Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan).  There’s also a murder wrapped in between the lines.  I caught the film at Sundance, and it’s one of my favorite films of the year thus farJohn Krokidas‘ direction is electric, and the performances are extraordinary, especially from Radcliffe and DeHaan.  The trailer does a good job of conveying the tone and story, but it only scratches the surface.

Apparently today is the day that Marvel rumors get confirmed.  We just heard that Bradley Cooper is in early talks to voice Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, and now THR has confirmed that Elizabeth Olsen is in final negotiations to portray Scarlet Witch in Joss Whedon’s sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron.  We previously heard that Saoirse Ronan was eyed for the Scarlet Witch role, but when she apparently passed, Marvel moved on to Olsen.  Now it appears that the Martha Marcy May Marlene actress’ deal is nearly done, and she will in all likelihood be playing Scarlet Witch opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson as brother Quicksilver in the Avengers follow-up.  Hit the jump for more.

FilmDistrict has released four new images from Spike Lee‘s remake/re-adaptation of Oldboy.  The story centers on a man (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  I’m really excited by the visual style Lee is bringing to the picture.  It’s unlikely that he’ll be able to eclipse Park Chan-wook‘s 2003 film of the same name, but he might come out with something that’s on par.

Rumor: Joss Whedon and Marvel Eye Elizabeth Olsen for THE AVENGERS 2 as the Scarlet Witch

It looks like Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) may have passed on the role of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers 2.   Now, it appears as if Whedon and Marvel have turned to Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) to play the heroine.   If Olsen seals the deal, she’ll star opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass 2), who is the frontrunner to play Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in the sequel.  While Ronan certainly would have been a capable performer on both the action and dramatic fronts, Olsen has yet to disappoint in her young career.  Hit the jump for more.

There’s nothing quite like being reunited with old friends, even if that friend happens to be a bloody hammer.  Joe Doucett (Josh Brolin) is happy to see anyone at all after emerging from 20 years of forced solitary confinement in Spike Lee’s Oldboy.  This reinterpretation of Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film sees Doucett go in search of answers and revenge only to find that things are more complicated than he could have imagined.  We have a collection of four exclusive images from the upcoming film that feature Brolin and co-star Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), along with a familiar piece of hardware that should please fans of the original film.

Also starring Sharlto Copley, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Imperioli, and Lance Reddick, Spike Lee’s Oldboy opens November 27th.  Hit the jump to view the new images.

Some new images from director Spike Lee’s Oldboy have made their way online.  Based on Park Chan-wook’s 2003 thriller of the same name, the story centers on a man (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  The first red-band trailer showed that Lee isn’t holding back when it comes to the brutality of the film, and he also looks to have crafted an interesting take of his own on the familiar story.  These new images don’t give away much, but we do see Brolin’s character looking very Howard Hughes-esque while in captivity.

Comic-Con: GODZILLA Panel Recap Reveals Multiple Monsters; Teases “Intimate” Approach by Director Gareth Edwards

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are bringing the classic monster Godzilla back to the screen next year, and the pic comes with some fairly lofty expectations from longtime fans of the character.  The studios surprised last year at Comic-Con by showing a reel of test footage shot by Gareth Edwards, teasing his take on the monster.  Godzilla returned to Hall H again this year, but this time it came with some actual footage from Edwards’ filming, revealing that Godzilla will indeed fight other monsters in the new movie.  Edwards took the Hall H stage with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston to talk about Edwards’ intimate take on the story, filming in Canada, balancing the monster aspect of the film with the human element, and much more.
