First Footage from WWII Tank Film FURY Revealed in Production Featurette; Brad Pitt Is Wardaddy

by     Posted 73 days ago

fury-trailer-brad-pitt

Sony has released the first footage from writer/director David Ayer‘s (End of Watch) World War II tank film Fury by way of a behind-the-scenes featurette.  The story takes place in 1945 as the Nazi regime is in collapse and revolves around the five-man crew of an American tank called “Fury”, led by Wardaddy (Brad Pitt), that battles a desperate German army.  While we’ll have a better idea of what to expect tonally when a genuine trailer hits, this first look is extremely promising.  All involved seem to emphasize that this is a character piece, and the fact that it’s an original story allows Ayer the freedom to explore whatever avenues he’d like.  This is definitely high on my “most anticipated” list for the fall. Hit the jump to watch the Fury production featurette.  The film also stars Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Pena, Jon Bernthal, and Jason Isaacs.  Fury opens in theaters on November 14th.

JERSEY BOYS Images and Featurette: Clint Eastwood Directs “the Musical for Everybody”

Warner Bros. has released a slew of Jersey Boys images from director Clint Eastwood’s adaptation of the popular stage musical, as well as a nearly 5-minute behind-the-scenes featurette.  For those unfamiliar, the film tells the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, chronicling the group’s rise in the 1960s with such hits as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man” and subsequent troubles that came with their success.  As this featurette points out, the Four Seasons were far from your poster boys for upstanding gentlemen, as Eastwood describes them as a group of “juvenile delinquents.”  I’ve seen the stage musical version of Jersey Boys and it’s a lot of fun, but I’m still wary of the story being told through Eastwood’s lens.  If anyone can suck the fun out of a musical, it’s Eastwood.

Hit the jump to check out over 35 Jersey Boys movie images as well as the new featurette.  The film stars John Lloyd Young, Vincent Piazza, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Renee Marino, Mike Doyle, and Christopher WalkenJersey Boys opens in theaters on June 20th.

New 22 JUMP STREET Images and Featurette; Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum Are Game for the Challenge of a Comedy Sequel

Sony Pictures has released a collection of new 22 Jump Street images and a new behind-the-scenes featurette for directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s comedy sequel.  In this featurette, the filmmaking duo discuss the challenge of recapturing the magic that made the first film so great, and stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are up to the task.  Lord and Miller have made a habit of greatly surpassing expectations, and I have no reason to believe 22 Jump Street will be any different for those wary of a comedy sequel.  The follow-up finds Hill and Tatum’s characters taking their undercover operation to a college campus, and I can’t wait to see what surprises are in store when the film opens in theaters next month.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum Are BFFs in New Featurette for 22 JUMP STREET

It’s difficult to define “chemistry” between two actors.  We know it when we see it.  Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum had it in 21 Jump Street, and now it looks even stronger in the sequel.  A new featurette has been released where the actors explain that they’re good together on-screen because they’re friends in real life, but I think that’s selling their acting a little short.  There have been married couples who have co-starred in movies and failed at finding chemistry, so while an off-screen relationship may be good, you still have to perform when the cameras roll.  As you can see from this featurette, Hill and Tatum have no problem performing (although improvising isn’t easy for Jenko).

Hit the jump to check out the new 22 Jump Street featurette.  The film opens June 13th, and also stars Ice Cube, Nick Offerman, Amber Stevens, Peter Stormare, Rob Riggle, Dave Franco, Jillian Bell, and Craig Roberts.

New Clip and Featurette from MALEFICENT Featuring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning

Disney has released a new clip and featurette from director Robert Stromberg’s fantasy adventure Maleficent.  The film tells the story of how the titular Sleeping Beauty villain turned antagonist, as Angelina Jolie plays a woman whose betrayal sets off a drive of revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides.  This new clip shows the “finger prick” scene with Elle Fanning’s Aurora, and while the film continues to look stylistically impressive, I’m curious to see if we’ll finally get a compelling fairy tale adventure film or if this one will join the ranks of snoozers like Alice in Wonderland and Snow White and the Huntsman.  As for the behind-the-scenes featurette, Stromberg and Jolie discuss balancing the light and dark aspects of the film.

2 New GODZILLA Images Offer Clear Look at the Full Monster; New Featurette Focuses on Alexandre Desplat’s Score

We’re just a day away from early screenings of Godzilla, but in case you can’t wait that long, Warner Bros. has released a pair of new Godzilla images that reveal the titular monster in full.  I liked the film a lot, and director Gareth Edwards does an excellent job of teasing out the Godzilla reveal through a slow build to the thrilling climactic finish.  It’s essentially a masterpiece of foreplay, and it’s a refreshing reprieve from the current trend of bludgeoning the audience’s eyeballs with CG-overload for two hours.  If you want to go in as cold as possible, I might suggest steering clear of these images until after you’ve seen the movie.  But if you really want to get a look at the full creature design, help yourself.  We’ve also included a new featurette that offers a behind-the-scenes look at composer Alexandre Desplat’s fantastic score.

Hit the jump to check out the Godzilla images and featurette, and be sure to read our interviews with Edwards and producer/Legendary CEO Thomas Tull.  The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, Juliette Binoche, and Bryan CranstonGodzilla opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 16th.

First Look at GOTHAM Goes Behind the Scenes of the Title Town with Commentary from the Cast and Crew

Everything that we’ve seen or heard about Fox’s upcoming series, Gotham – the trailers, interviews with Bruno Heller and Kevin Reilly, and images of the cast – has been very encouraging; the series’ newly released behind-the-scenes featurette is no different.  This three-minute video shows off plenty of footage from the show and includes a fair share of heroic and villainous screentime alike.  There’s also commentary from showrunner Heller, director Danny Cannon, and stars Ben McKenzieDonal Logue, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

While the main criticism the series has drawn so far is that it’s a world based on the Batman comics in which Batman does not yet exist.  Instead, I submit this as an alternate viewpoint: rather than watching a superhero fighting villains he’s expected to overcome, we’ll be watching a man struggling against a growing evil that is destined to defeat him.  That, if nothing else, will make for some unique and dramatic television.  Hit the jump to watch the new Gotham featurette.

New Featurette for EDGE OF TOMORROW Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt

edge-of-tomorrow-featurette

A new featurette has been released for Edge of Tomorrow.  The film stars Tom Cruise as a military officer who is killed within minutes of a doomed combat mission to take down a hive-like alien race.  He wakes up and is forced to relive the day over and over again, but it allows him to become a better soldier, and perhaps change his fate thanks to the help of a fellow officer played by Emily Blunt.  In the featurette, Blunt explains that her character once had the same ability, and while she eventually lost it, it allowed her to become a much better soldier.  Now she’s going to train Cruise’s character, which involves killing him a lot.  This makes the exercise seem like a video game: every time you die, you get better.  Tom Cruise is Super Meat Boy.

Hit the jump to check out the Edge of Tomorrow featurette.  The film opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on June 6th, and also stars Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson, Noah Taylor, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riely, Jonas Armstrong, Franz Drameh, Masayoshi Haneda, and Tony Way.

10-Minute Featurette and New Clip from FRANK Starring Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson

A new Frank featurette has gone online along with a new clip.  The film stars Domhnall Gleeson as an aspiring musician who joins an eccentric band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank, played by Michael Fassbender.  The story is loosely based on Frank Sidebottom with Fassbender sporting an odd, large mask.  The featurette is really fascinating as Gleeson, Fassbender, writer Jon Ronson, (whose time with Sidebottom was the inspiration for the story), and director Lenny Abrahamson talk about the various aspects of the film without giving away any of the plot.  I really liked the movie when I saw it at Sundance, and even though it’s strange, it’s also funny and moving, and I hope it finds an audience.

New Featurette and IMAX Poster for MALEFICENT Starring Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, and Sharlto Copley

Disney has released a new Maleficent featurette along with the IMAX poster.  The film tells the story of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the titular villain (Angelina Jolie), and how a betrayal sets off a drive for revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides.  This featurette features interviews with Jolie, Elle Fanning (who plays the Princess Aurora), screenwriter Linda Woolverton (The Lion King), and director Robert Stromberg (the two-time Oscar winning art director of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland).  Although this featurette contains new footage, I’m starting to become a little bewildered at how little we’ve seen from this movie.  I’m not complaining—I’m usually in favor of less marketing, more surprises—but it’s less than a month away, and although Disney has another family film this month (Million Dollar Arm), this is a big, fantasy spectacle.  Thankfully, what we’ve seen so far looks pretty good.

DreamWorks Animation has released a new behind-the-scenes How to Train Your Dragon 2 featurette.  The sequel takes place five years after the events of the first film, and in this featurette writer/director Dean Deblois discusses how the How to Train Your Dragon world has changed since then.  The biggest difference is that now all of the inhabitants of Berk have a dragon; as Jay Baruchel points out, if you don’t have a dragon, you are in the minority.  Moreover, Baruchel’s Hiccup and Toothless are now working to fill out their Viking map by exploring more territories.  The follow-up continues to look great, and with no new Pixar movie this year, HTTYD2 has this summer all to itself (save for the very young skewing Planes: Fire and Rescue), so it should clean up quite nicely.

New GODZILLA Featurette Wants You to Tremble at the Iconic Roar

by     Posted 116 days ago

godzilla-roar

The trailers and TV spots for Godzilla can afford to avoid looking directly at the titular monster because he can be identified by the sound of his roar.  It’s a sound that has remained with the monster through his many iterations and pictures, and it will be with him in the upcoming sequel/reboot.  In a new featurette, director Gareth Edwards, sound designer Erik Aadhal, and producer Thomas Tull talk about the iconic roar, and it’s a little funny to see everyone laboring over gigantic soundboards when it was originally created in 1954 in a far more lo-fi manner (according to Wikipedia, composer Akira Ifukube “produced the sound by rubbing a resin coated glove along the string of a contrabass and then slowing down the playback).  Perhaps it would have been better for the remake to just get Bryan Cranston to do the roar.  His impersonation isn’t too far off.

Hit the jump to check out the new Godzilla featurette.  The film opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 16th, and also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken WatanabeSally HawkinsJuliette Binoche, and David Strathairn.  Also, unrelated to the roar, look at the background of the interview with Edwards.  I’m pretty sure that model is for a new kaiju we’ll be seeing in the movie.

Extended Featurette Provides First Look at Russell Crowe’s Directorial Debut, THE WATER DIVINER

An extended, behind-the-scenes featurette for The Water Diviner has provided a first look at Russell Crowe‘s upcoming directorial debut.  The story centers on an Australian man (Crowe) who travels to Turkey to attempt to locate the bodies of his three sons, who were killed there during WWI.  The featurette is narrated by Crowe, and his passion for the material really comes through.  Even though this is only his first feature, it looks like he’s come up with something that has a grand scope but retains its focus on the intimate character drama.  This is definitely one I’m going to be keeping on my radar, and although it doesn’t currently have a release date, I hope we’ll get to see it soon.
