Atlanta Readers: Win Passes to an Early Screening of GANGSTER SQUAD!

by     Posted 1 year, 364 days ago

I was on board with Gangster Squad from the get-go since I love the gangster-noir genre and the1940s Los Angeles setting.  I’m the guy who will begrudgingly accept L.A. Noire based solely on the setting.  Hopefully, I’ll have a far more positive response to Gangster Squad, which is based on the true story of a LAPD task force who fought to bring down gangster Mickey Cohen.

I’m pleased to announce that we’re giving away 20 passes to the Atlanta screening of Gangster Squad.  Hit the jump to find out how you can check out the film early and for free.  The movie stars Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sean PennGangster Squad opens January 11, 2013.

I offered a similar sentiment following the tragedy at Aurora, CO back in July and I’ll do the same today: the event that unfolded yesterday in Newtown, CT is inexcusable and genuinely heartbreaking, even from a distance. The optimist in me wants to believe that any negative situation can be used to educate and improve the world we live in going forward. In this case, I’m hopeful but unsure that’s possible. On behalf of everyone here at Collider, I want to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those who were lost yesterday.

As petty as it may seem, I feel fortunate to be able to offer a bit of diversion to your day with this week’s Top 5. Included in a trailer-heavy rotation this week is a new cut from Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, The Hobbit interviews with Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis and more, the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, Andre’s coverage from his Gangster Squad set visit, and the first look at Will Smith and Jaden Smith gallivanting across the human unfriendly Mother Earth found in M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth. A brief recap and link to each will greet you after the jump.

15 Things to Know from Our GANGSTER SQUAD Set Visit

by     Posted 2 years, 4 days ago

For the set visit to Gangster Squad, we were driven from Hollywood to the middle of Bellflower, California, which had been dressed to look like 1940’s Hollywood. It was a cold night, but before we can get to set, we were hustled around the hundreds of onlookers near the edges of the shoot. Ryan Gosling was shooting that day, and that meant many of the people from the neighborhood wanted to have a look, and were trying to take picture or film him with their phones. It was impressive to that many people at considering that it was already ten at night and the weather was already cold.

We were on set October 20, 2011, and at the time we had no idea that Gangster Squad would ever become controversial. But how could we know that a shooting in the summer of 2012 would change and delay the film?  Such will explain why they talk about shooting a shooting in Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and why these interviews didn’t run months ago. At the time, spirits were high as they were halfway through the shooting process and Sean Penn has just started filming, though he wasn’t on set that night. To find out more about the things we learned on the set of Gangster Squad, read on after the jump.

Josh Brolin Talks GANGSTER SQUAD, Fascination with Gangster Culture, His Character, Working with the Incredible Cast and More During Our Set Visit

by     Posted 2 years, 4 days ago

Josh Brolin has had one of the strangest rises to leading man status imaginable. Though he kicked off his career in The Goonies, he spent the next twenty years of his career in supporting parts, and on television with little success. Then came 2007, where he was not only in four big movies, he was great in all of them and the lead in No Country for Old Men. Now he’s a star and he’s one of the three leads of Gangster Squad.  We had a chance to talk with Josh Brolin on set about the movie and his career, and that interview follows after the jump.

Director Ruben Fleischer Talks GANGSTER SQUAD, Classic Gangster Movies, the Incredible Cast and the Level of Action During Our Set Visit

by     Posted 2 years, 4 days ago

Ruben Fleischer exploded on the scene with Zombieland, which made him a hot young director to keep an eye on. Though his follow up (30 Minutes or Less) could be typed a sophomore slump, it may have been because he didn’t want to keep making comedies like Zombieland. Gangster Squad is Fleischer’s chance to show that he isn’t just a funny guy with a great eye, but someone who could do anything. Our on-set interview with Fleischer follows after the jump.

Anthony Mackie Talks the Appeal of the Gangster Genre, African-Americans in Film Noir, and More on the Set of GANGSTER SQUAD

by     Posted 2 years, 4 days ago

Anthony Mackie has become so reliable. He’s one of those guys that gets called in to show up for a couple scenes and just deliver. That’s not to say he can’t handle his own, as he delivered a stellar performance in Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-Winning The Hurt Locker, but of late he’s been a scene stealer. You can tell why in the interview below. The man is a goof, and a great talker. Our interview with Anthony Mackie on the set of Gangster Squad follows after the jump.

Robert Patrick Talks Gun Tricks, Ensemble Chemistry, and Losing 30 Pounds on the Set of GANGSTER SQUAD

by     Posted 2 years, 4 days ago

Though Robert Patrick may never escape his first breakthrough role as the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, over the last twenty years he’s built a great resume as a character actor. In Gangster Squad he plays a seasoned vet that’s part cowboy, and it’s a part that Patrick was born to play. We got a chance to talk to the actor about his character and some of his previous work while on the set of Gangster Squad. Our interview follows after the jump.

Giovanni Ribisi Talks Gangster Fascination, 1940s Technology, and His Character Moustache on the Set of GANGSTER SQUAD

by     Posted 2 years, 4 days ago

Though there was a while there where they tried to turn him into a star, Giovanni Ribisi has settled into to being a great character actor, and as a supporting player, he’s proved himself to be one of the most reliable supporting performers working today. In Gangster Squad he plays the techie, which if the film is to be compared to The Untouchables, is the Charles Martin Smith role. But Ribisi was ready to play and we talked about his character and acting in our interview, which follows after the jump.

Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick are two of the producer on Gangster Squad, and both saw the film as a chance to take a period story and make it fresh for modern audiences. The films that kept coming up were Sherlock Holmes (which Lin was a producer on) and The Untouchables. They spoke at length about the origin of the film, its director and cast, and the vibe they were going for with the movie. Our on-set interview with Lin and McCormick follows after the jump.

New Clip from THE HOBBIT Features Singing Dwarves; New TV Spot for GANGSTER SQUAD Reveals More Footage

by     Posted 2 years, 6 days ago

If you’re still hungry for more footage from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and can’t wait until it opens this Friday, then you’ll enjoy this new clip featuring the company of Dwarves singing a melancholy tune. It’s lovely out of context, but becomes much more powerful once you’re in the thick of it and have seen the Dwarves’ backstory.

We’re exactly one month away from the debut of Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad and a new TV spot has been released to remind you of that fact. This piece shows off more footage from the crime drama that sets the villainous gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) against the combined handsomeness of Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling. Hit the jump to check out both videos.
