New Trailer and Poster for HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

by     Posted 198 days ago

DreamWorks Animation has released a new How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer and poster.  Director Dean Deblois’ animated sequel takes place five years after the first installment, as Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless are exploring new territories while the rest of their friends are enjoying dragon races.  During one of Hiccup and Toothless’ journeys, they discover a secret ice cave, hundreds of new wild dragons, and the mysterious Dragon Rider.  This trailer has the blend of humor and drama I was hoping the movie would provide, and I’m surprised and encouraged that they’re leaning more heavily on the emotional side than the comedy even though the jokes are still funny.  The first How to Train Your Dragon set a high bar.  The sequel could very well meet it.

Hit the jump to watch the new How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer and to check out the new poster.  The film opens in 3D on June 13th and also features the voices of Cate Blanchett, Gerard ButlerKit HaringtonCraig FergusonAmerica FerreraJonah HillChristopher Mintz-PlasseT.J. Producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew A. Kosove Talk POINT BREAK Remake; Reveal Second Unit Is Already Filming and It’s Being Shot in 10 Countries

by     Posted 203 days ago

The 1991 action-crime thriller Point Break, starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, is currently in the midst of getting the remake treatment.  Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the original film followed FBI Agent Johnny Utah (Reeves), as he went undercover and formed a friendship with Bodhi (Swayze), the leader of a group of surfers that were suspected of robbing banks.

At the recent press day for Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister’s directorial debut Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp, Alcon Entertainment producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew A. Kosove gave on update on the status of the Point Break remake being directed by Ericson Core.  The two men talked about how they’re already well underway with second unit photography, that they’re shooting a variety of extreme sports (of which surfing is only one subset) in 10 countries across the globe, that it’s the greatest footage they’ve ever gotten at Alcon, how the narrative of the remake is completely different from the original, that the only thing they’re carrying over is the bromance between Utah (now played by Luke Bracey) and Bodhi (now played by Gerard Butler), that they are considering using the former President’s masks as a throwback to the original, and that the film will be in 3D and IMAX, but converted later.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Luke Bracey to Co-Star with Gerard Butler in POINT BREAK Remake; Principal Photography Starts Early This Summer

by     Posted 243 days ago

A little over a month ago, we reported that Gerard Butler would be starring as Bodhi in Ericson Core’s Point Break remake, and now it looks as if Luke Bracey (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) will co-star as Johnny Utah.  Previously played by Keanu Reeves in the 1991 original, Utah is a young FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a criminal gang in the world of international extreme sports.  As previously reported, Butler’s Bodhi – previously played by Patrick Swayze – is “an expert extreme sports athlete who also seeks to find nirvana through the conquest of a series of athletic feats such as surfing 100-waves. He saves Johnny Utah, the undercover FBI agent, and brings him into the fold of international criminals.”  Production on the remake is set to begin early this summer.  Hit the jump for all the details.

Gerard Butler Circles Kane Role in KANE & LYNCH Adaptation; Offer out to Vin Diesel to Play Lynch

by     Posted 355 days ago

The long-gestating adaptation of the 2007 Kane & Lynch video game may have found one of its two title roles in Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen).  Director F. Gary Gray has been on and off the project over the last few years, but is currently attached to helm the adaptation.  If a deal is made for Butler to play Kane, that would reunite the director and star of the 2009 film, Law Abiding Citizen.  Butler’s co-star in that film, Jamie Foxx, was once eyed to play a lead in this film opposite Bruce Willis with Simon Crane directing, but those plans have come and gone.  An offer is currently out to Vin Diesel to play Lynch.  Hit the jump for more.

Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, and Aaron Eckhart Returning for OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN Sequel LONDON HAS FALLEN

by     Posted 361 days ago

This year’s battle of the White House actioners did not play out as most expected.  Director Roland Emmerich’s Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx-fronted White House Down was supposed to be a massive summer hit, but instead the film only managed to gross $73 million domestically.  March’s Olympus Has Fallen, however, was a surprise success, taking in $161 million worldwide against a significantly smaller budget than Emmerich’s pic.  Now it’s the Gerard Butler film that has franchise potential, as the newly restructured Focus Features (which recently absorbed FilmDistrict) is moving forward with an Olympus Has Fallen sequel called London Has Fallen.  Hit the jump for more, including which actors will be back.

Gerard Butler Circling GODS OF EGYPT; Peter Sarsgaard and Liev Schreiber Join Tobey Maguire in PAWN SACRIFICE

by     Posted 1 year, 31 days ago

Following this year’s Olympus Has Fallen, it appears that Gerard Butler may have found his next project.  Deadline reports that the actor is circling director Alex Proyas’ (I, Robot) fantasy adventure pic Gods of Egypt.  The pic takes place within the world of Egyptian mythology and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) is already set to play Horus, who sets out for revenge against his uncle for killing his father, Osiris.  Butler is in talks to play Set in the pic, the murderous brother of Osiris and a god of the desert, storms, and foreigners.  It’s decidedly fantastical territory and comes just after Proyas’ planned Paradise Lost adaptation was scrapped due to budget issues.

By now you’ve all heard about Olympus Has Fallen‘sDie Hard in the White House” pitch.  It’s a brilliant idea and it’s surprising that it took so damn long for someone to milk.  The problem is that Antoine Fuqua and company didn’t really take the concept beyond the basic premise of a highly skilled loner taking on a gang of terrorists by himself.  The film is drained of any of Die Hard‘s charm and cleverness and fills in the gaps with a bewildering tone and eye-rolling patriotism.  The action scenes are top notch though, so fans of the genre will definitely be consoled.  But anyone looking for the new John McClane will be severely bummed. And now you can relive the mixed experience again with the Sony Blu-ray, which is boasts unreal 5.1 audio.  More on our review of the Olympus Has Fallen Blu-ray after the jump.

Gerard Butler in Talks for Sci-Fi Thriller THE RAVEN; Zac Efron and Amber Heard to Lead Eran Creevy’s AUTOBAHN

by     Posted 1 year, 162 days ago

More casting out of Cannes today.  A lead has been set for the long-gestating sci-fi thriller The Raven, as Heat Vision reports that Gerard Butler is now in talks to star.  Universal acquired the project in 2010 based off a short film directed by Ricardo de Montreuil.  The story of the short focuses on a young man with powers who is being chased around downtown Los Angeles by robotic police drones.  The feature film is described as a conspiracy thriller set in the future, and Gold Circle has come onboard to co-finance alongside Universal Pictures.

Liam Hemsworth was previously in talks for the lead role, but it appears that Butler will now be toplining the pic following his action turn in Olympus Has Fallen.  De Montreuil is still onboard to direct, and with a star and financing coming together, The Raven might start production as early as this year.  Hit the jump for casting news and a director change concerning the thriller Autobahn.

The nationwide expansion of Harmony Korine‘s Spring Breakers meant that I had the opportunity to catch the film last night at my local theater. We’ll talk a more specifically about our coverage of the film after the jump. For now, I’d like to make a futile attempt at encapsulating my feelings on the pic in the next few sentences. There’s a lot to like about Breakers whether it be the performances (James Franco‘s especially), the music, the slick editing and use of foreshadowing, etc. Nevertheless, for me this isn’t a movie that I “liked” as much as it’s one I respect. It’s beautiful, surreal, challenging, abhorrent, and vapid all at the same time. In other words, it’s art.

I could go on for days about the pic but that’s not why we’re here. In this week’s Top 5 we’ll take a look at our Breakers coverage, some Transformers 4 plot details, Olympus Has Fallen interviews with Gerard Butler and Antoine Fuqua just to name a few, a new trailer and poster for Star Trek Into Darkness, and The Croods interviews with Nicolas Cage and more. As is standard, a brief recap and link to each awaits after the jump.

“It’s Die Hard in the White House” is the high-concept pitch for Olympus Has Fallen.  It’s a good pitch, but it’s only a pitch.  The movie doesn’t understand what makes Die Hard compelling beyond “a hero trapped and alone has to take out bad guys and save hostages”.  It’s about well-written characters and a confident tone, and Olympus Has Fallen has neither.  Director Antoine Fuqua may have his movie paced like a tight action flick, but it’s a confused picture in terms of mood and plot.  Furthermore, it misses the obvious aspect of giving us a hero worth rooting for and a villain worth rooting against.  Olympus Has Fallen sticks us in the crossfire and no one knows how to shoot.

Gerard Butler Talks OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN and HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2; Says the Sequel Takes Off Where the Last One Ended

by     Posted 1 year, 219 days ago

Opening this weekend is director Antoine Fuqua’s White House actioner Olympus Has Fallen.  The film stars Gerard Butler as a disgraced Secret Service agent called back to duty when terrorists take over the White House and capture the President (Aaron Eckhart).  The film also stars Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Ashley Judd, Melissa Leo, Robert Forster, Dylan McDermott, Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, and Rick Yune.  If you’ve been waiting for Butler to return to action, you’re going to be very happy watching Olympus Has Fallen.  Not only is the film a hard R for graphic violence, it features Butler kicking ass in some great action set pieces.  Watch some clips here.

A few days ago I landed an exclusive interview with Butler here in Los Angeles.   During our wide-ranging conversation, we talked about making Olympus Has Fallen, what it means to him, the great supporting cast, why he took a break from action films, the byproduct of being a celebrity, future projects, and more.  In addition, he also talked about How to Train Your Dragon 2, what it’s about, having a script this time, recording his dialogue, redoing about 70% of the first film after seeing the finished film, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.
