Dan Aykroyd loves to keep hope alive that there will be a Ghostbusters 3 someday even though I’ve never met anyone who was hoping for a new Ghostbusters movie.  Today, Aykroyd appeared on Dennis Miller’s radio show [via ComingSoon] and strongly hinted that the movie is happening in spring 2012 no matter what.  Seriously this time:

“Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray,” he says, “That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that ‘Ghostbusters’ is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of ‘Ghostbusters 3′ is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood.”

Today is Groundhog Day so naturally you’re going to be watching Groundhog Day.  But what else can you do to celebrate this holiday?  More importantly, what else can you do to celebrate the greatness of Bill Murray?  You can get this shirt, which has some of Murray’s most famous roles in Groundhog form.  Unfortunately, they can’t see their shadows so that means about 18 months of Garfield.

Just when you thought that the whole “cut a trailer of a random movie set to the music from Inception” thing was getting old and over-used, something like this comes along. Someone has expertly cut a trailer for the 1984 comedy classic Ghostbusters using Hans Zimmer’s score for Inception, and it’s actually pretty damn great. This just goes to show that with the right music, and a superbly talented/creative individual, you can pretty much make a great trailer out of anything. That being said, this version of Ghostbusters looks fantastically epic. Anyway, I’ll shut up now and let you hit the jump to check it out for yourself.

We’ve got a pair of set photos for you today.  The first comes from the set of Rise of the Apes, and features stars Freida Pinto and James Franco walking across a bridge with what currently looks like Andy Serkis, but will eventually resemble an ape on screen.  The Planet of the Apes reboot also stars John Lithgow, Brian Cox, and Andy Serkis, and Tom Felton.

The other comes from Wes Craven’s Scream 4 set, with the iconic villain Ghostface in frame.  Original cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette will all reprise their roles in some capacity, while Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettierre, Rory Culkin, and Adam Brody are new to the sequel.  Check out both images after the jump.

Every year at Comic-Con, the convention floor is sensory overload.  You’ve got thousands of people walking around trying to take everything in. Some are trying to buy convention exclusives, others are trying to get autographs and meet celebrities, and the rest are there for a myriad of reasons.  Comic-Con has definitely become a melting pot of pop culture and if you’re into movies, TV, comic books, toys, anime, and almost anything that can be collected, it’s located in San Diego in late July.  While the show has grown bigger than the Convention Center can hold (which is why some events are now offsite at other hotels) it’s an amazing show and something you have to experience for yourself.

Since many of you have never been to Comic-Con, I decided to take a ton of photos of the Convention Floor and some of the cool things taking place outside on the street.  So if you’re into everything I mentioned above, you’re going to love the 100 pictures after the jump.

Unless you’re living under a rock, you’re aware that San Diego Comic Con is about two weeks away. The best part about this geek nirvana is no matter what your poison, comics, art, television, video games, movies, etc., there’s something for everyone. One of the specific niches that Comic Con is best known for is limited edition collectibles. Each year, seemingly every booth creates a batch of merchandise that will only ever be sold for those magical four days in San Diego.

The official Comic Con website recently put up the “full” list of exclusives (we say “full” because things will continue to be added to the list) and it’s pretty huge. So we went through and picked out the ten that we feel Collider readers might find most appealing, or could make for the best investment after July 22-25. It may be 26 years since Drs. Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler defeated ghosts at the New York Public Library but apparently the library still has issues with unwanted spectres.  Improv Everywhere decided to liven things up a bit by bringing a little random ghostbusting at the institution of learning.  No books were thrown around, but most people there got a little thrill to their day.  Also, if you’re wondering how they pulled this off without getting kicked out, the library invited them to cheer people up in face of budget cuts. Look for the people who aren’t clapping at the end or who don’t even look up from their computers.  Those people are probably not a lot of fun at parties.

There has been something strange in your neighborhood long before Doctors Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, Egon Spengler and Mr. Winston Zeddemore teamed up in 1984 to bust ghosts.  Here’s a fun history fact: Séances were immensely popular in the mid-to-late 1800s to the point where even Mary Todd Lincoln conducted them in the White House in order to communicate with her dead son Eddie.

But “summoning” spirits is a tricky business so someone has to clean up the mess.  That’s when you telegram The League of STEAM (Supernatural and Troublesome Ectoplasmic Apparitional Management) who have been servicing your supernatural elimination needs since 1884.  Decked out in steampunk gear (with one of the proton packs looking suspiciously like a tuba), they’re ready to believe you.

As confirmed earlier this month, Bill Murray is going to be in Ghostbusters 3. I don’t think this was a huge shock to most people because he is the face of that franchise but it’s exciting to think of Murray being Dr. Peter Venkman yet again. Also recently we saw reports of the movie possibly shooting this summer. But this week Murray sat down with David Letterman and the two got to talking about both Ghostbusters 3 as well as the Ghostbusters video game.

Murray, at least on the show, claims that he would only be in the third installment of Ghostbusters if he was killed off early on in the film. He doesn’t seem too keen on the idea, saying he didn’t like Ghostbusters 2 even and that the third film was his “nightmare”.

Ghostbusters 3 has been rumored for a great many years, but the project looks like it is finally taking off.  Director Harold Ramis says it may start shooting next summer and hit screens in 2011.  He also revealed a few details about the plot of the film.  It’s unlikely that Dan Aykroyd’s Ghostbuster go to Hell script will ever see the light of day, as Ramis appears to be leaning toward a Ghostbusters: The New Class type of movie.  The full quote and a bunch of speculation is after the jump.

Ray Parker Jr. has continued to work. You wouldn’t probably know it unless you were a fan. But he put out an album in 2006. At this point, not only is Ray Parker Jr. not afraid of no ghosts, no one is afraid of no ghosts. People may be more afraid of Ray Parker Jr. than ghosts. We like in a post-scared of no ghosts culture. It is hard to know how good busting makes someone feel, though.

Ghostbusters is a bona-fide “classic” now. It’s a loosey-goosey movie, it’s tightly put together, but it feels free. The set pieces never feel stuck in their boxes, and the comedians seem to bring their own sensibilities to the material. Directed by Ivan Reitman from a script by Harold Ramis and Dan Ayroyd, it moves at a quick clip and balances the boo scares with the jokes successfully. It’s one of the film effects driven comedies that works as a comedy first. But it’s Bill Murray’s movie.

This Friday, director Harold Ramis’ new comedy “Year One” hits theatres. So to help promote the film, I spent the past two days in New York City as a reporter for our partner website Omelete.  In the coming days I’ll be posting the full interviews, but with all the talk about another “Ghostbusters” movie floating around the Internet, I figured I should post what he told me right now.

The highlight: if the script for “Ghostbusters 3″ turns out as good as everyone hopes, they’re all in. Even Bill Murray!

“The time is right.”

These were the words spoken by legendary director/producer Ivan Reitman last night at the Ghostbusters 25^th Anniversary Blu-Ray Premiere at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills. I had the privilege to attend the event, courtesy of Fangoria, Atari, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. There, I watched the original Ghostbusters film in Blu-ray on the big screen, played the soon-to-be-released videogame, and spoke with Mr. Reitman about all things Ghostbusters, as well as his most anticipated project, Ghostbusters III.

Let’s get right to it: the status of Ghostbusters III. According to Reitman, a general outline for the film has already been completed by its two writers, Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (who also wrote the upcoming Harold Ramis directed film, Year One). Dan Aykroyd has been saying in interviews recently that the film will be about “passing on the torch to a new generation of Ghostbusters.” Reitman said that while this is true, he stressed that it is merely one part of the story they’re trying to tell. The writers are expected to turn in their first completed draft in a month or so, and all five of the Ghostbusters “rights holders” will review and approve it.

What do I mean by all five? Ghostbusters is not owned solely by Sony/Columbia Pictures. They are just one part of what Ivan Reitman considers to be a sort of Ghostbusters “family.” Before anything can move forward on anything related to Ghostbusters, all five parties must submit their approval. This includes Sony/Columbia, Ivan Reitman, Dan Akryoyd, Harold Ramis, and Bill Murray. Reitman contributes the protection of the franchise (aka why there haven’t been dozens of Ghostbusters sequels) to this “family.” As such, Reitman stressed that “Ghostbusters III is never definite,” but it’s certainly looking pretty good now.
