Opening this week in limited release is director John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings.  The film focuses on the origins of the Beat movement and follows the volatile friendships of Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston), William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster), and Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan).  There’s also a murder wrapped in between the lines. Kill Your Darlings also stars Michael C. HallDavid CrossKyra SedgwickJennifer Jason Leigh, and Elizabeth Olsen.  I caught the pic at Sundance and it was one of my favorites of the festival.  In addition, the entire cast was fantastic and Krokidas announces himself as a serious talent to watch.  For more on the film, read Matt’s review or read all of our previous coverage.

Last week I landed an exclusive interview with Radcliffe.  He talked about making the film on a limited budget and not much time, working with the rest of the cast, how it compared to making the Harry Potter movies, what he learned about the beat movement, having the film play at both Sundance and Toronto, and more.  In addition, I asked if he’d be willing to do some kind of easter egg like walking in the background of a scene when Warner Bros. makes the Harry Potter spin-off movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.

The DirecTV 10-episode drama series Full Circle marks the television debut of award-winning screenwriter and playwright Neil LaBute, with two half-hour episodes airing every Wednesday.  Examining the human condition and relationships through a series of conversations between 11 people whose lives are intertwined, each episode takes place in a restaurant and features a conversation between two characters, with one of the character’s storylines then carrying over into the next episode.

The first episode of the series features Tim (Tom Felton), an exchange student from England, and his love interest, the unhappily married Bridgette (Minka Kelly), who Tim pleads with to run away with him.  While at the show’s press day, actor Tom Felton spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about what attracted him to this project, how intimidating it was to take on so much dialogue in such a short amount of time, establishing an entire relationship in a half-hour episode, and working with Minka Kelly. He also talked about his new TNT drama series Murder in the First, as well as what’s it like to forever be a part of the Harry Potter franchise.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Could a HARRY POTTER Quidditch Movie Be in the Works?

With the recent news that author J.K. Rowling is penning the screenplay for a brand new film set within the world of Harry Potter, we have confirmation that Deathly Hallows – Part 2 did not mark the end for this magical world onscreen.  While there are sure to be remakes and reboots down the line, the franchise is currently still in the safe hands of Rowling, and a new adventure based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is on its way.  Along with the official announcement of Rowling’s involvement in the new movie was also the news that it is planned as the first in a series of new films, and recent trademarks by Warner Bros. suggest that one such spinoff film could possibly revolve around the game of Quidditch.  Hit the jump for more.

TOP 5: INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 Interviews, Oscar Beat, HARRY POTTER Spinoff Film Series in the Works from J.K. Rowling, Cinemath, TIFF 2013 Coverage

Having played in limited release since August, director James Ponsoldt‘s high school drama The Spectacular Now finally made its way to my Midwestern neck of the woods this weekend and I jumped at the chance to see it last night. Although it elicited fewer laughs than I expected, the film levied an emotional punch that I’m still shaking off today. As has been noted by many before me, Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley‘s performances are fantastic and their chemistry is palpable from beginning to end (one scene in which Woodley’s Aimee describes her dreams of a perfect marriage stands out to me in particular). Moreover, Kyle Chandler‘s turn as Teller’s estranged father is as powerful as it is short-lived. If you have the slightest interest in the coming-of-age genre, and this film is playing nearby, take the time to see it. Few in the genre capture the nuance of high-school love and personal demons as honestly as The Spectacular Now.

With that ringing endorsement behind me, this week’s Top 5 includes a slew of Insidious: Chapter 2 interviews, Adam keeping his finger on the pulse of awards season with his recurring Oscar Beat feature, news that Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling are teaming up for a new film series inspired by Harry Potter, a new installment of Cinemath that takes a look at the history of movie ticket prices, and a recap of our robust TIFF 2013 coverage. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, a brief recap and link to each of the above can be found after the jump.

Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara Says Ben Affleck is “Perfect” as a “Tired, Weary and Seasoned” Batman, Plus More on J.K. Rowling’s New HARRY POTTER Film

It’s good to be the king.  I imagine that when Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara took the podium during a press conference today, he didn’t even have to ask the gathered masses to take a knee in deference.  I mean, the guy walks in to talk about bringing Batman on screen against Superman for the first time ever in Batman vs. Superman, and knows that none other than Ben Affleck will be given that honor.  As if that weren’t enough, Tsujihara also gets to add that “one more thing”, which just so happens to be a new partnership with J.K. Rowling, who will write the screenplay for at least one more movie set in the world of Harry Potter.  See what Tsujihara had to say on both properties after the jump.

Since the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, everyone has been talking about Warner Bros.’ attempt to find “the next Harry Potter.”  Though there have been a few attempts to fill the void created by the conclusion of the box office juggernaut series, the studio has yet to have another franchise take off like Harry Potter did.  So, what are they to do?  Well begin a “Harry Potter-inspired” franchise with author J.K. Rowling onboard, of course.  The studio announced today that it is reteaming with Rowling on “a new film series from Rowling’s world of witches and wizards” that is inspired by Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which begins in New York 70 years prior to the events of Harry Potter.  Hit the jump for more on this very exciting news.

David Tennant Spies of Warsaw

Based on New York Times best-selling author Alan Furst’s acclaimed novel, the mini-series Spies of Warsaw (airing April 3rd and April 10th on BBC America) tells the story of military attaché Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier (David Tennant), a decorated hero of the 1914 war.  While he is being drawn into a world of abduction, betrayal and intrigue in Warsaw, he finds himself in a passionate love affair with Anna (Janet Montgomery), a Parisian lawyer for the League of Nations.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, actor David Tennant talked about what attracted him to this project, what the experience of shooting in Poland was like, dream roles that he’d love to do, how he’d love to be a part of a big comic book movie, what it’s like to interact with Doctor Who fans, what it means to him to have been a part of the Harry Potter franchise, whether he was ever really in talks for The Hobbit, which props he’s taken home, why he wasn’t a part of the London Olympics opening ceremony, and how he’d love to do a project with Aaron Sorkin.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Alice Finch’s Massive and Detailed Lego Hogwarts Sculpture is Absolutely Magical

Lego released an official Harry Potter Hogwarts playset.  It’s okay.  I’m sure it would take a while to build, and it would be nice to have.  It doesn’t hold a candle to what Flickr user Alice Finch did.  I am in absolute awe of what she’s built.  On her Flickr page, she says “It took 400,000 bricks and took 12 months to build.”  I can only imagine how much it cost since so many of the bricks had to be special ordered.  Furthermore, the amount of trial and error must have been staggering.  And the attention to detail is astounding.  Scenes from the books/movies have been recreated throughout sculpture.  Oh, and the castle also lights up.

Toy Fair 2013: New NECA Toys for 60′s BATMAN, AFTER EARTH, ROBOCOP, GREMLINS, PROMETHEUS, ALIENS, IRON MAN, PREDATOR, and More

For our final Toy Fair image article, we’re doing a huge roundup of NECA toy images.  While they’re making figures/toys for all the regular movies and TV shows you’d expect, the highlight of NECA’s 2013 lineup is the 60′s Batman featuring Adam West!  The reason it’s taken so long to get an Adam West Batman is lawyers.  From what I’ve been told, Warner Bros. owns Batman, while 20th Century Fox owns the show.  For years the two companies have been trying to work out an agreement to release DVDs/Blu-rays and new merchandise with little success.  However, late last year, the two companies finally worked out a deal and 2013 should see a lot of new toys and hopefully a home video release.  Which is great news for the fans.

In addition to checking out the first 60′s Batman toy in quite some time, you can also see new toys for Aliens, A Christmas Story, Captain America, Michael Keaton’s Batman, Carrie, Gremlins, E.T., Harry Potter, Hulk, Iron Man, Pacific Rim, Predator, Prometheus, Scarface, Rambo, The Hobbit, The Hunger Games, Thor, and a lot more.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you know Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross Station in London is extremely important to young wizards, as that’s where one departs for Hogwarts via the Hogwarts Express.  In response to the worldwide popularity of Harry Potter, years ago Kings Cross installed an actual 9 3/4 sign and a half trolley lodged in a wall so fans could visit the station and take fun pictures.  However, with the station doing a massive renovation over the past few years, they just opened a new Harry Potter themed shop near the Platform 9 3/4 sign that’s loaded with Potter paraphernalia.  Since I’m in London right now, I decided to check out the shop and take a bunch of pictures.  Hit the jump to check them out.

Warner Bros. to Release $1,000 Limited Edition HARRY POTTER: PAGE TO SCREEN: THE COMPLETE FILMMAKING JOURNEY

Do you think you’re a Harry Potter fan?  Did you pay $350 for that 31-disc Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection box set?  You’re not a fan.  Warner Bros. is going to find the true fans (that have lots of money).  EW reports that the studio is releasing Harry Potter: Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey (never mind that I’m pretty sure can’t have two colons in the same title).  The eight-volume collection is designed to resemble a bookshelf at Hogwarts; “Six of the books focus on the workings of the creative departments behind the films — wardrobe, props, special effects, and the like — while the seventh is a commemorative keepsake offering an intimate look at the relationships that developed between the cast and crew over the decade it took to produce all eight films. But the best part by far is the eighth book: a scale replica of The Monster Book of Monsters (don’t worry, it doesn’t bite — I hope).”  I have no idea how that’s worth $1,000.

But maybe it’s worth $600?  The set is currently 40% off at Amazon, and you can click here to pre-order it.  The set is limited to 3,000 editions worldwide, and will be released on December 4th.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

Cosplay at London Comic-Con: Check Out Over 100 Pictures Featuring STAR WARS, DOCTOR WHO, BATMAN, PORTAL and More

One of my favorite things about Comic-Con are all the people that cosplay.  Since I’d never been to a convention outside the United States, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I went to London Comic-Con yesterday afternoon.  Would anyone dress up?  Are fans in London the same as the rest of the world?  After spending hours walking around the convention, I’m happy to report geeks and nerds are the same no matter where you live.

However, while many at London Comic-Con cosplay, I found more people dressed up as their favorite anime/manga/video game character instead of a movie/TV show character.  Since I only attended London Comic-Con yesterday, it’s possible that over the weekend, the percentage would be the same.  Either way, some of the costumes were pretty great, so hit the jump to check out about 100 pictures including Doctor Who, The Last Airbender, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Thor, Portal, Batman, Zelda, Mortal Kombat, and a lot more.
