TOP 5: MAN OF STEEL Set Visit, Confessions of an INDIANA JONES Virgin, AFTER EARTH, THE WOLVERINE Set Visit, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT: Season 4 Review

All of the hooplah surrounding Arrested Development Season 4′s debut on Netflix last weekend got me waxing nostalgic for another beloved series that was all too short-lived: Paul Feig‘s Freaks and Geeks. When you consider its impressive shelf life, it’s hard to believe the series only aired on NBC for one season and consists of merely 18 episodes. For the sake of comparison, ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager will air its series finale this Monday and will finish with five seasons and 121 episodes in hand. Continuing down that path, Freaks and Geeks averaged just above 6.5 million weekly viewers during its run while Secret Life‘s most watched episode to date (the Season 2 premiere) garnered a little over 4.5 million viewers. In addition to the frustration I feel for having 103 more Secret Life episodes to never watch than Freaks and Geeks episodes to cherish, this also provides an interesting example of the ratings expectations/requirements of a network series in comparison to that of a cable series.

I could go on and on doing my best Brendan Bettinger: Stats Genius impersonation but the real reason I’m here is to present this week’s Top 5. In this installment you have at your disposal our visit to the set of Man of Steel, Allison watching the Indiana Jones movies for the first time, After Earth interviews with Will and Jaden Smith, another set visit for The Wolverine, and Matt’s review of the aforementioned fourth season of Arrested Development. As you’ve grown to expect, a brief recap and link to each of the above makes its home after the jump.

60 Things to Know About MAN OF STEEL From Our Set Visit; Plus a Recap of What We Saw Being Filmed

The streets are filled with plane debris and overturned cars.  Shards of glass and the wreckage of an epic battle cover the sidewalks.  Near one corner, a 7/11 has been destroyed.  On another end of the street, a bank vault has been ripped open and the pristine lobby is covered with dirt, glass and broken counter tops.  Almost every business along main street has been damaged.  As I turn to see another area of Main Street, two USA military helicopters fly in formation, like they’re about to go into battle.  As I peer a bit further down the road, I can see Superman (Henry Cavill) fighting for his life against two Kryptonians and I’m not sure if the helicopters are going to help or hurt him.  I then hear Zack Snyder call cut.  A second later, I’m smiling ear to ear, because I can’t believe I’m in Smallville, getting to watch Superman kick some ass.

But let me back up a second.

As I type these words, it’s August 30, 2011 and I’m flying back to Los Angeles.  The reason I’m up in the air is that I got to spend all day yesterday on the set of director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (along with some other online journalists).  While there, I got to visit a number of sets, interview some of the cast and the filmmakers, and observe some filming in the heart of Smallville.  As a lifelong Superman fan, I can tell you that after visiting the set, I’m 100% sure that Man of Steel is going to be something special, and a lot different than any version of Superman you’ve seen before.  So much more after the jump.

Henry Cavill Talks Comics Influences, Filming the Action Scenes, Physical Training, and More on the Set of MAN OF STEEL

I’ve done a lot of interviews over the past eight years, so you can put it in perspective when I say getting to talk to Henry Cavill on the set of Man of Steel was one of the highlights of working for Collider.  It wasn’t only because he was super cool and generous with his time when he’d spent all day filming a complicated action scene.  The main reason this was one of the best interviews I’ve ever been part of was due to Cavill wearing his Superman costume during the interview!  As a lifelong Superman fan, getting to be on the set and talking to the person playing the Man of Steel was literally a dream come true.

During the group interview, Cavill talked about the daunting nature of the role and project, his training, the wire work, perfecting an American accent, what it’s been like filming on location, working with the rest of the cast, which comics he’s enjoyed reading, his interpretation of Clark Kent, the action scenes, and so much more.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to what he had to say.

With the recent news that Tom Cruise would be dropping out of Guy Ritchie’s feature treatment of the 60s show The Man from U.N.C.L.E. in order to focus on Mission: Impossible 5, it looks like Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) might swoop in to save the day.  Warner Bros. is apparently flying high on Cavill with positive buzz surrounding their upcoming Superman movie and has entered into talks with the star for the studio’s action comedy.  Hit the jump for more.

Superman Apparently Likes Cheeseburgers in MAN OF STEEL Hardee’s Commercial

The age-old question of “Does Superman like cheesburgers?” may or may not have finally been answered.  Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr. has released a new commercial tied to Warner Bros.’ upcoming film Man of Steel, and Superman himself Henry Cavill makes an appearance in the ad. I would’ve given the spot top marks if it had showed Superman actually taking a giant bite out of one of Hardee’s unreasonably ginormous burgers, but alas Supes only shows up to do more city damage with his power thrusting.  Hit the jump to watch the commercial.  Man of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th.

MAN OF STEEL Star Henry Cavill Thinks a Superman/Batman Movie Would Make a “Great Story”

by     Posted 1 year, 70 days ago

The possibility of a Superman/Batman movie was seriously considered back in August 2001 when screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) penned a script entitled “Batman vs. Superman“, which even reached the point of attaching director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) before fizzling out.  But bringing DC Comics’ two biggest heroes together (a team-up referred to as “World’s Finest”) is always an enticing possibility, and with Man of Steel set to take flight in a few weeks, the DC Movie Universe could be a fresh start.  While Justice League is seen as the ultimate achievement of bringing DC Comics’ biggest heroes together, there’s no reason to rule out a film only featuring Batman and Superman.  New Superman Henry Cavill is certainly intrigued by the idea.

Final Trailer for MAN OF STEEL Features General Zod’s Ultimatum and a Mountain of Skulls

by     Posted 1 year, 72 days ago

Warner Bros. has released the final trailer for Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel.  In it, General Zod (Michael Shannon) sets up the film’s central conflict and gives Earth 24 hours before unleashing hell.  While previous trailers focused on the coming-of-age tale of a Kryptonian stranded on Earth and the love between a son and his father, this new cut is chock full of dread, evidenced by Superman drowning in a mountain of skulls.  When the villains threaten to kill one million humans for every life he saves, you can’t help but feel as if the odds are fully stacked against the world’s most powerful superhero.  This is certainly a fresh approach to the iconic hero and I hope that the film lives up to the trailers’ expectations.

MAN OF STEEL Character Posters Begin with Russell Crowe, Henry Cavill, and Michael Shannon; Plus a New Featurette [Updated]

Warner Bros. loves their character posters, and it was only a matter of time before they started rolling them out for Man of Steel.  They’ve kicked them off with Superman’s daddy, Jor-El (Russell Crowe).  It’s a forceful poster (I’m not sure why a scientist like Jor-El needs a giant gun), and I’m wondering how it will compare to a poster for Lois Lane (Amy Adams) or Ma and Pa Kent (Diane Lane and Kevin Costner) assuming they get ones.  Meanwhile, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for Warner Bros. going overboard and making character posters for Richard Schiff and Christopher Meloni.

Hit the jump to check out the poster along with a new featurette.  The film also stars Henry Cavill, Michael Shannon, and Laurence FishburneMan of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th.

Warner Bros. has unveiled three brand new behind-the-scenes featurettes and a new TV spot for director Zack Snyder’s Superman film Man of Steel, highlighting some great new footage alongside interviews with members of the cast and crew.  Each of the three featurettes focuses on one of the film’s themes, so we’ve got Speed focusing on Superman’s intensely quick movements, Strength focusing on the two different approaches to Supes’ abilities from his two fathers (Russell Crowe’s Jor-El and Kevin Costner’s Pa Kent), and finally the self-explanatory Flight.  Along with new footage, we see Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, Crowe, Snyder, and producers Deborah Snyder and Charles Roven talking about the film.

“Can you imagine how people on this planet would react if they knew there was someone like this out there?”

After watching the latest Man of Steel TV spot, all I can do is agree with one of the comments posted on the official Facebook page where they said, “shut up and take my money.”  While Warner Bros. has spent a substantial amount of money making Zack Snyder‘s Superman and they need to sell it to casual moviegoers, I’m at the point where I wish I could avoid the rest of their marketing plan and just see the finished product.  However, I understand why we’re about to get slammed with new images, posters, clips and TV spots.  The studio has to open this film and the only way to sell it is to show off the goods.  And this new TV spot does just that.  Watch it after the jump.

Warner Bros. has released a new TV spot for director Zack Snyder’s take on Superman, Man of Steel, and it’s pretty massive in scope.  The spot highlights quite a bit of new footage from the film, including a couple of scenes that take place in space.  WB’s marketing campaign has moved into full “action” mode with the latest spots and trailers for Man of Steel, as we’re starting to see just how intense Snyder’s level of destruction is in the film.

MAN OF STEEL Calendar Unveils New Images; Henry Cavill Says Film Is “Zack Snyder’s Baby”

Interest is running high for Warner Bros.’ upcoming Superman film Man of Steel, and understandably so.  The most recent trailer turned even the most hardened cynics (mostly with regards to director Zack Snyder) into cautious optimists, and early buzz on the film is incredibly positive.  Producer Christopher Nolan’s influence is clearly felt within the pic’s more grounded and serious take on the character, and even though Snyder is the film’s director, many have posited that Nolan had a heavy hand in making the pic.  Nolan himself has previously stated that he was responsible for shepherding the film through development but took a more hands-off approach once actual filming began, and now star Henry Cavill has spoken up to note that Man of Steel is very much Zack Snyder’s film.

Hit the jump to see what Cavill had to say, and to check out some new images from the film courtesy of a couple of Man of Steel calendars.  The film opens in 3D on June 14th.
